The St. Louis Cardinals today have optioned last night’s starter Marco Gonzales to Memphis (AAA) and recalled two left-handed pitchers – Tyler Lyons and Nick Greenwood – and right-handed pitcher Miguel Socolovich, all from Memphis.  Lyons will make the start tonight against Washington at 7:15 p.m. CDT.

Lyons, 27, will be making his 7th start for St. Louis this season and appearing in his 10th game.  This is the lefty’s 5th stint with the big-league club, splitting his time with Triple-A Memphis.

Socolovich went 4-1 with a 1.54 ERA with St. Louis earlier this season, picking up wins in his first two relief outings with the club.  He made 21 appearances (23.1 IP), 16 scoreless, and pitched a season high 2.0 innings on three occasions.

Greenwood spent the majority of the season at triple-A where he made 21 starts and appeared in 31 games, posting a 12-6 won-loss record and 5.68 ERA.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Instead of the new coach many Iowa fans were hoping for, the Hawkeyes has apparently gotten a new Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz, the nation’s second-longest tenured coach, has spent the last eight months overhauling his underperforming program.

Ferentz has made a ton of changes this offseason, from introducing alternate uniforms to switching practice times and updating his recruiting philosophy. The Hawkeyes are hoping they’ll pay off with wins, starting Saturday against Illinois State in the season opener.

Chiefs tight end Kelce out with ankle injury

Sports

September 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tight end Travis Kelce will miss the Chiefs’ preseason finale Thursday night against St. Louis after spraining his ankle in practice earlier this week. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Tuesday it was a slight sprain and Kelce would have been able to play had it been the regular season. But with most of the starters getting the night off — if not all of them — it only made sense to keep Kelce out of the game.

Reid also said tight end Demetrius Harris could see time against the Rams. He returned to practice this week after a pair of surgeries to repair a fractured foot. Harris’s return was complicated by a staph infection that developed during his recovery.

Moss’ 3-run homer ends it as Cardinals beat Nationals 8-5

Sports

September 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brandon Moss hit a three-run walk-off home run with two outs in the ninth, giving the St. Louis Cardinals an 8-5 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night. The NL Central-leading Cardinals have won nine of 10 and lead the division by six games. They’ve won nine in a row over Washington, coming from behind the last two nights.

Moss, who struck out with the bases loaded to end the third, homered off Casey Janssen (1-4) to straightaway center on a 1-0 count. Janssen took the loss on Monday, allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning. Mitch Harris (2-1) worked the last two innings, allowing two hits. Ryan Zimmerman homered and Anthony Rendon had a two-run double in a four-run third for Washington.

***********

Mark Reynolds of the St. Louis Cardinals was taken out for a pinch-hitter two innings after being hit by a pitch on the right wrist in the third inning against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night. Reynolds was plunked by Joe Ross with the bases loaded. He stayed in the game until the fifth when Tommy Pham pinch-hit and grounded out. The team said X-rays were negative, calling the injury a contusion, and that Reynolds was day to day.
