Kenny Wallace preps for final NASCAR race

Sports

July 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Kenny Wallace has made more starts in NASCAR’s second-tier circuit than anyone. Yet he’s arguably known more for his TV work than his driving. Wallace is set for one last weekend in the spotlight before retiring from NASCAR as a driver. Wallace will make his 547th and final NASCAR Xfinity start Saturday night at Iowa Speedway.

Iowa has become known as a showcase for NASCAR’s youngest drivers. But the attention will be focused on the 51-year-old Wallace, the brother of track designer and Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace.

Sports

July 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter hit a pair of home runs and Greg Garcia’s bases-loaded walk capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 9-8 on Thursday night. Carpenter went 4 for 5 with four RBIs after moving back to the leadoff spot. It was his first career multihomer game and he has a career-high 12 home runs this season.

Jhonny Peralta’s two-run single off Rockies closer John Axford tied the game at 8-all and Garcia’s walk scored Kolten Wong as the Cardinals recorded their seventh walk-off win of the season. Axford (3-5) took his third loss in his last four outings. Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez gave up five runs on 10 hits in five innings. Carlos Villanueva (4-3) earned the win.

Indians trade outfielder Moss to Cardinals

Sports

July 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have traded outfielder Brandon Moss to the St. Louis Cardinals. In return, Cleveland will receive minor league pitcher Rob Kaminsky. The Cardinals haven’t scored in 22 consecutive innings and Matt Holliday re-injured his right quadriceps Wednesday. It’s the same injury that caused the seven-time All-Star to miss 31 games. The Cardinals lead the NL Central by 4 1/2 games over Pittsburgh.

Cleveland signed Moss as a free agent during the offseason. He had 15 homers and 50 RBIs in 94 games but the Indians have fallen back in the AL wild-card race. Moss played four seasons in the NL with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Kaminsky was selected with the No. 28 overall pick two years ago and was considered one of the top prospects in the Cardinals system.

Holliday goes back on 15-day DL with right quadriceps strain

Sports

July 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday is back on the disabled list. The St. Louis Cardinals placed the All-Star outfielder on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a recurrence of his right quadriceps injury. Holliday was hurt running to first base in the first inning on Wednesday. He missed 31 games from June 9 to July 16, and the Cardinals were 18-13 in his absence.

Infielder Greg Garcia was recalled from Triple-A Memphis, and first baseman Dan Johnson was designed for assignment to make room on the roster for newly-acquired outfielder/first baseman Brandon Moss. Garcia made his second appearance with the Cardinals this season. He appeared in 12 games from June 19 to July 3, batting .417 (5 for 12) with a tying pinch homer on June 26 against the Cubs.

The 25-year-old Garcia was batting .299 with a .404 on-base percentage and 33 RBIs in 81 minor league games.

Cardinals, Fox Sports Midwest announce new long-term deal

Sports

July 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals will stay on Fox Sports Midwest through 2032 thanks to a new agreement. The 15-year deal announced Thursday begins in 2018 and runs through the 2032 season. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Cardinals are a lynchpin of Fox Sports Midwest, which broadcasts games to parts of 10 states.

Cardinals games are the highest-rated prime-time programming in St. Louis during the baseball season, and the local ratings ranked first among all Major League Baseball teams in 2014. This season, only the Kansas City Royals have higher local ratings.

Local rights packages in baseball have skyrocketed in value as live-event programming has become increasingly popular among viewers and advertisers. Team chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. says the deal will help keep the team competitive.
