Chiefs sign TE Kelce to $46 million, 5-year deal

Sports

January 29th, 2016 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has signed a $46 million, five-year extension that includes $20.5 million guaranteed.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because the Chiefs did not disclose the terms of the contract in announcing the extension.

Kelce, a former third-round draft pick of the Chiefs, was entering the final year of his rookie contract. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound tight end has started 27 of the 33 games he’s played over three seasons, catching 139 passes for 1,737 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He missed the majority of the 2013 season after undergoing knee surgery.

No. 8 Maryland squeezes past No. 3 Iowa 74-68

Sports

January 29th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Robert Carter Junior and Rasheed Sulaimon each scored 17 points, and 8th ranked Maryland used a late charge to beat Number 3 Iowa 74-68 on Thursday night, ending the Hawkeyes’ nine-game winning streak.

The Terrapins led 62-60 before freshman center Diamond Stone dunked off a pass from Jake Layman with 1:24 left. After a steal on the other end by Melo Trimble, Jared Nickens made a layup for a six-point lead. Maryland (18-3, 7-2 Big Ten) made the margin stand up by making eight free throws over the final 49 seconds. Coming off a defeat at Michigan State on Saturday, the Terrapins improved to 10-0 following a loss over the last two seasons.

Peter Jok scored 14 points for the Hawkeyes (16-4, 7-1), who lost for the first time since December 10th. Jarrod Uthoff, who entered averaging a Big Ten-leading 18.9 points, finished with nine points on 2-for-13 shooting.

#3 Iowa visits #8 Maryland tonight (1/28)

Sports

January 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Off to their best start in the Big Ten since 1970 the third ranked Iowa Hawkeyes face a huge test this evening with a visit to eighth ranked Maryland. The Terrapins are 6-2 in the league race and sophomore Melo Trimble is one of the top point guards in the country.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery McCaffery says road wins are special and the Hawkeyes have won their last six Big Ten road games dating back to last season. Iowa’s ranking is the highest since since 1987. McCaffery says he does not pay attention to preseason rankings and this one is no different.

It will be the only regular season meeting between Iowa and Maryland. Pre-game coverage on KJAN begins at 5-p.m., with tipoff in the XFINITY Center 6:05-p.m.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s basketball team (11-8, 3-5 Big 12) lost to TCU (12-8, 4-5 Big 12), 72-62 on Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum. According to Cyclones.com, Freshman Bridget Carleton paced the Cyclones, as she put up 23 points and 11 rebounds in the outing. Zahna Medley was TCU’s top scorer with 22 points on the night.

Iowa State will face Oklahoma at home on Saturday, Jan. 30. Tip between the Cyclones and Sooners will be at 1 p.m.

Hawkeye women seek much needed win

Sports

January 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder says the Hawkeyes are not waving the “white flag” on their NCAA Tournament hopes. After racing out to a 12-2 record to start the season the Hawkeyes are in the midst of a three week slump that has seen them drop five of six games heading into tonight’s (Thursday night’s) game at home against Michigan. Bluder feels getting to nine Big Ten victories would be enough to get the Hawkeyes a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Just a couple of weeks ago the Hawkeyes were riding a 25-game winning streak at home but have dropped their last two games in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It was a loss to Michigan back on January seventh that started the skid. Bluder is confident the Hawkeyes will get things turned around. Tip-time for the game is 7-p.m.
