Iowa women host PSU Wednesday

Sports

January 19th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa women host Penn State Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions have lost five-in-a-row, but Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder says they shouldn’t be taken lightly. “They’ve got talent, height, and speed,” Bluder said. “I would say last year maybe they did not shoot the ball as well as they were capable of, but this year, they’ve got three guards on the floor who are shooting the ball very well from three point range that we have to defend,” Bluder said.

The Hawkeyes are coming off an 80-73 loss at Michigan State on Saturday. Iowa had a 16-point lead late in the first half, but committed 18 turnovers that aided the Spartans’ rally. “You’re going to have turnovers. If you have a turnover, though, you’ve got to dig your heals in on defense and I don’t think we did that,” Bluder said. Iowa has started the Big Ten season with three wins and three losses.

Penn State enters the game at 1-5 in conference play. Wednesday’s tipoff is at 7pm at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

No. 19 Iowa State knocks off No. 1 Oklahoma 82-77

Sports

January 19th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Georges Niang scored 22 points, Monte Morris added 20 and No. 19 Iowa State beat top-ranked Oklahoma 82-77 on Monday night, its first win over a No. 1 team since toppling Wilt Chamberlain’s Kansas Jayhawks in 1957. Morris had a jumper, a key rebound and two free throws in the final 21 seconds for the Cyclones (14-4, 3-3 Big 12), who were actually slight favorites at home.

It was the third time a No. 1 team lost in the state of Iowa this season. Northern Iowa beat North Carolina and Iowa beat Michigan State. Oklahoma’s Isaiah Cousins hit a 3 with 41 seconds left to tie the game at 75. But Morris drilled a step-back jumper for the lead, and Abdel Nader’s free throws with 3.1 seconds to go put it out of reach.

Buddy Hield scored 27 points and Cousins had 26 for the Sooners (15-2, 4-2), who could make a case for retaining the top spot with a win Saturday at No. 13 Baylor.
