KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs and veteran safety Jimmy Wilson have agreed to terms on a one-year deal, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Friday night.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Chiefs had not announced the contract.
Wilson spent his first four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, starting 21 games, before spending last season with AFC West-rival San Diego. He started seven of 13 games and made 21 tackles.
The Chiefs were looking for a veteran safety after Tyvon Branch signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency and Husain Abdullah announced his retirement earlier in the week.
Kansas City has already used the franchise tag on safety Eric Berry.
A group of former and current Iowa State football players pulled a woman out of a canal while on spring break at South Padre Island in Texas. Former Cyclones linebacker Jack Spreen tells The Associated Press that he and some friends were sitting on a balcony at their hotel on March 16 when they noticed a car go into the nearby canal.
Spreen says he and two friends saw a woman, which police identified as Luis Maria Castro, attempting to kick out the windshield as water filled the passenger side of the vehicle. The three Cyclones tried to break the driver’s side window without success, but the woman was able to make a hole in the windshield. Spreen says he and his friends pulled the woman out.

City championships were on the line Thursday night at the Council Bluffs Relays.
Girls Team Scores
Josey Starner led the Yellow Jackets with a three-win night in the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and the discus throw. Elise Willits and Alexis Fetters-Johnson also were winners in the 800 and high jump, respectively.
Kye Madsen of Lewis Central was a two-time winner in the 1500 and 3000 meter races.
Boys Team Scores
The Titans won behind wins from: Sal Fidone in the 100, 200 and 400. Alec Mass won the 110 high hurdles. Bailey Teply took the 400 hurdles. Kenneth McMahan won the 800. Mitchell Brinkman won in the shot put and discus events. Nate Shepherd won the high jump.

The DeWitt invitational girls track meet was held at Clarke High School in Osceola on Thursday with a few area teams competing.
In the Class A Portion of the meet Bondurant-Farrar came away with the team title with 138pts. Creston finished 7th. The Panthers won the 4x800m Relay.
In the Class B portion of the meet Wayne took the top spot with 149pts, edging out Nodaway Valley who was second with 130.5pts. The Wolverines got a win in the 800m from Destiny Scar. She also took the 1500m run and 3000m run. The Wolverines also took the top spot in the 4x200m Relay, 4x400m Relay and Sprint Medley.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Mike Leake went four shutout innings, Stephen Piscotty homered twice and the St. Louis Cardinals beat a New York Yankees’ split squad 9-1 on Thursday. Leake gave up two hits and struck out five. He got inning-ending double plays from Alex Rodriguez and Chase Headley.
Leake, signed to an $80 million, five-year free-agent contract in December, has 24 strikeouts and two walks in 20 innings overall. He threw 33 of 39 pitches for strikes. Piscotty hit a second-inning solo shot, and added his second homer this spring one pitch after Brandon Moss had a solo drive during the fourth off Michael Pineda.
Jeremy Hazelbaker added a three-run homer in the fifth. Tommy Pham had a two-run shot in the seventh. Pineda gave up six runs and seven hits over five innings. He had given up just one run in nine earlier spring training innings.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa says freshman guard Andrew Fleming has been released from his scholarship so he can transfer to another school. Fleming averaged 2.2 points and one assist in 11 games last season. Fleming says he is seeking a “better situation” for his college career.
Fleming is the second Hawkeye in as many days to announce that they are leaving the program. Fellow freshman Brandon Hutton said Wednesday that he is transferring as well. The departure of Fleming and Hutton likely frees up a scholarship for walk-on Nicholas Baer, who scored 15 points in Iowa’s 87-68 loss to Villanova in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Hawkeyes also now have a scholarship available if they want to increase their depth in the backcourt.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State quarterback Joel Lanning had his moments after earning the starting job midway through last season. The Cyclones will need to see more than just glimpses of promise from Lanning this fall if they hope to end a three-year bowl drought.
Lanning, who’ll be a junior in 2016, is the only quarterback for Iowa State that’s taken a collegiate snap. So his progress this offseason is perhaps the biggest area to watch as coach Matt Campbell enters his first season as coach.
The Cyclones, who have only Lanning and redshirt freshman Dominic De Lira as quarterbacks on scholarship this spring, end camp with a scrimmage on April 16 at Jack Trice Stadium.
