IndyCar to run in Iowa through 2018

Sports

July 9th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Speedway and the IndyCar series have reached a two-year extension through 2018. Iowa Speedway president Jimmy Small announced Saturday that the short track, which is owned and operated by NASCAR, will host races in 2017 and 2018. IndyCar has run races in Iowa since 2007, just a year after the Rusty Wallace-designed oval opened. The 10th annual Iowa race is set for Sunday.

Jay Frye, the president of competition and operations for IndyCar, says Iowa has become a staple of its schedule, adding that the track showcases some of the best racing the series offers. The 0.875-mile oval has also hosted a pair of NASCAR Xfinity events and one Camping World trucks series race in recent years.

Josef Newgarden will join Pagenaud on the front row.

Villar’s ninth-inning hit leads Brewers past Cardinals

Sports

July 9th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jonathan Villar hit a game-ending RBI single with two out in the ninth, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Villar’s hit, off Seung Hwan Oh, got past diving third baseman Greg Garcia. Left fielder Tommy Pham’s throw to the plate was on line and Yadier Molina slapped a quick tag on Kirk Nieuwenhuis as he slid. The home plate umpire ruled Nieuwenhuis safe, leading to an argument from Molina. The call was confirmed after a brief review.

Chris Carter homered twice for Milwaukee, and Jeremy Jeffress (2-4) got the win in relief. Nieuwenhuis led off the ninth with a walk off Trevor Rosenthal (2-4). He moved to second on a sacrifice by Hernan Perez. Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha left Friday’s game in the seventh inning after being struck on the lower right leg by a low liner off the bat of Milwaukee Brewers Jonathan Villar. With one out, Villar smashed a shot up the middle that struck Wacha just above his right ankle at Miller Park.

Diaz, Kluber added to All-Star teams as injury replacements

Sports

July 8th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — St. Louis rookie shortstop Aledmys Diaz will replace his teammate, infielder Matt Carpenter, on the National League roster for next week’s All-Star game. The American League also made a change, with Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber stepping in for Toronto pitcher Marco Estrada, who has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. The replacements were announced Thursday by NL manager Terry Collins of the New York Mets and AL manager Ned Yost of the Kansas City Royals.

Carpenter made his third All-Star team, but left Wednesday night’s game against Pittsburgh with an injury. Diaz is batting .319 with 12 home runs, 44 RBI, 22 doubles, 54 runs scored, a .382 on-base percentage and a .534 slugging percentage.

Kluber, the 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner, will be making his All-Star debut in his sixth major league season. Kluber is 8-8 with a 3.79 ERA, striking out 114 batters in 114 innings.
