Sports

July 7th, 2016 by admin

ST. LOUIS, Mo., July 7, 2016 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to today’s game that they have placed All-Star infielder Matt Carpenter (right oblique strain) on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of catcher Michael McKenry from Memphis (AAA).

Carpenter, named on Tuesday to his third National League All-Star team, becomes the third St. Louis player in three days (also Brandon Moss and Brayan Pena) to be placed on the disabled list.   Carpenter currently ranks among National League leaders in several offensive categories, including both on-base (.420) pct. and slugging (.568) pct.  He was batting .298 with a team-high 25 doubles, 56 runs scored and 53 RBI to go along with his 14 home runs.

Carpenter was disabled once prior in his Major League career (May 23 to June 22, 2012) for a right oblique injury.

McKenry, 31, was signed by the Cardinals as a minor league free agent on May 27 after beginning the 2016 season with the Texas Rangers Triple-A Round Rock club.  Since joining Memphis, he’s batted .341 (28-for-82) in 24 games with 5 home runs and 20 RBI, compiling a 1.126 on-base + slugging pct.  He helped Memphis to a 7-6 win with his walk-off home run against Nashville last night.

The right-handed hitting Tennessee native has appeared in 308 games in the majors with Colorado (2010, 2014-15) and Pittsburgh (2011-13), combining for a .239 batting average (200-for-838) with 29 homers and 103 RBI.

McKenry has been assigned uniform no. 19.

Kang hits key double amid investigation, Bucs beat Cards 7-5

Sports

July 7th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jung Ho Kang drove in two key runs with a seventh-inning double a day after Chicago police said they were investigating an allegation of sexual assault against the Pirates infielder, and Pittsburgh beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 on Wednesday night for its sixth straight comeback win.

Pittsburgh has won seven consecutive overall and leapfrogged St. Louis for second place in the NL Central. It got homers from David Freese and Sean Rodriguez, and Kang’s double off Jonathan Broxton (1-1) put the Pirates up 6-5 after they trailed 5-1.

Kang has not been charged, and Major League Baseball said in a statement it would “respond fully as additional facts emerge.” The Pirates have won three straight series at Busch Stadium after dropping their previous seven in St. Louis. Pirates relievers combined for five scoreless innings. A.J. Schugel (2-2) got the win and Mark Melancon picked up his 26th save.

Cardinals All-Star infielder Matt Carpenter left in the third inning with a right oblique injury after swinging awkwardly.

Cardinals place Pena on 15-day DL, add Rosario from Memphis

Sports

July 6th, 2016 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS, Mo. , July 6, 2016 – Prior to tonight’s game, the St. Louis Cardinals placed catcher Brayan Peña on the 15-day disabled list today with left knee inflammation.  Rookie catcher Alberto Rosario has been purchased from Triple-A Memphis and is expected to be available for tonight’s contest.  Rosario will wear uniform No. 68.

Peña opened the season on the disabled list and missed 75 games after having left knee surgery in early April. He was activated from the D.L. on June 28, and made two starts, including last night when he picked up his first hit as a Cardinal.  Peña is 1-for-8 on the season with two pinch at-bats.

Rosario has appeared in 39 games for the Memphis Redbirds and is batting .281 (32-114).  The 29 year old was signed by St. Louis as a minor league free agent on December 12, 2014, and is in his 11th professional season after signing with the Los Angeles Angels as a non-drafted free agent in January of 2005.  He has nabbed 10 of 24 (42%) would be base-stealers this season and has a 42% career caught-stealing rate in the minors (295-704).  Rosario will be making his Major League debut.

Iowa’s Kittle on watch list

Sports

July 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa senior tight end George Kittle is garnering preseason recognition. Kittle has been named to the watch list for the John Mackey Award, which was established in 2000, and is awarded annually to the most outstanding Tight End in FBS college football.

The native of Norman, Oklahoma had a breakout Junior season, with 20 catches for 290-yards. He also led the Hawkeyes with six touchdown receptions. Kittles’ performance earned him honorable mention All American status from S-I. dot com.

Iowa has had one winner of the Mackey Award. That was Dallas Clark in 2002.
