Buehler, Dodgers blank Cards to draw even in wild-card race

Sports

September 14th, 2018 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Walker Buehler allowed two hits in eight innings, Yasiel Puig homered twice and the Los Angeles Dodgers drew even with the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL wild-card race with a 3-0 victory on Friday night.

Buehler (7-5) pitched beyond the seventh inning for the first time and earned his first victory since Aug. 17. He retired the first 13 batters before Paul DeJong singled to left field. Harrison Bader singled later in the fifth for the Cardinals’ only other hit.

Buehler struck out nine and walked two. In two career starts against St. Louis, he has not allowed a run and has 18 strikeouts in 15 innings.

The Dodgers and Cardinals are tied for the second NL wild-card position, four games behind Milwaukee for the top spot. Los Angeles entered 1½ games behind first-place Colorado in the NL West.

Puig homered in the second off Jack Flaherty (8-7) and connected again in the ninth off Tyler Webb. It was his second multi-homer game of the season.

In the seventh, Cody Bellinger scored on a passed ball by Yadier Molina.

Kenley Jansen hit Yairo Munoz with a pitch to open the ninth but retired the next three batters to finish the two-hitter, earning his 35th save in 39 opportunities.

Flaherty worked six innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. He has 168 strikeouts this season, the fourth-best total for a rookie in franchise history.

UP NEXT:

The Cardinals send right-hander John Gant (7-5, 3.16 ERA) to the mound Saturday afternoon to make his third career appearance and first start against Los Angeles. Veteran lefty Rich Hill (8-5, 3.88) starts for the Dodgers.

Harlan airs it out to beat Atlantic

Sports

September 14th, 2018 by admin

The Harlan Cyclones went to the air to beat the Atlantic Trojans on Friday night 56-14. It was a tight game early with a 7-0 Harlan lead after the first quarter. The Trojans would tie the game at 7-7 and again at 14-14 with just over 4 minutes left in the first half.

That’s when the Cyclones took to the aerial attack. Harlan Quarterback Preston Mulligan threw touchdown passes of 54, 7, and 31 yards to take a 21 point lead into halftime.

The 54 yard strike was on the first play of that drive. The next drive only took 3 plays. And the final score was as time expired in the half. The Cyclones carried that momentum into the second half and they rolled to the win.

Mulligan was 12-19 for 350 yards and 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. The Cyclones outgained the Trojans 579-159 and had a 350-45 advantage through the air.

The Cyclones improved to 3-1 and will travel to ADM to open up district play next week.

Atlantic falls to 2-2 and will open district play at home against Kuemper Catholic.

Atlantic travels to Harlan for final non-district test

Sports

September 14th, 2018 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans football team will take on a Hawkeye Ten foe for the third straight week with a trip to Harlan for their final non-district test tonight. The Trojans (2-1) are coming off an overtime win last week over Clarinda 21-20. The Trojan defense came up with a stop on a Clarinda 2-pt conversion try to seal that win. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said a win like that boosts the confidence of the team moving forward. This week he knows the Trojans will face a tough test against a much bigger line from Harlan (2-1).

Coach McDermott hopes the Trojans can create some seems for their backs to hit some big plays but he knows it will be important to sustain some drives to help in the time possession game against the Cyclones.

The Cyclones also have a knack for playing tough defense and Harlan Head Coah Curt Bladt has liked the improvement he has seen from his team defensively thus far.

Chase Mullenix has been strong at the quarterback spot for Atlantic throwing for 432 yards and 3 scores while rushing for 306 yards and 4 more touchdowns. Coach Bladt had high praise for Mullenix and thinks they will be facing an improving Atlantic team.

Harlan will counter with a productive quarterback of their own in Preston Mulligan. He has thrown for 748 yards and 11 touchdowns with only one interception given up. Coach McDermott hopes the Trojans can put the Cyclones in some long third down situations to make Mulligan’s job more difficult.

Tune in for a full interview with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview this afternoon at 4:45pm.

We’ll have coverage of the game tonight on KJAN. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call from Merrill Field with pregame at 6:30pm and kickoff at 7:00pm. You can catch the game on-air, online, on the app, or watch the live video feed on our Facebook page. Stay tuned after the game for all the scores from around the state on the Iowa High School Scoreboard Show from 10:00pm-11:30pm.
