Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brad Keller pitched seven strong innings to win for the fourth time in six starts, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Whit Merrifield had two hits, two RBIs, and scored two runs for the Royals. He also stole two bases to increase his American League lead to 33 steals, including a league-best 12 of third base. Keller gave up one run and four hits and two walks while striking out six. He is 4-1 with a 1.62 ERA in his last six starts.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals rookie Tyler O’Neill hit a three-run homer during a six-run eighth inning, Marcell Ozuna drove in three and Miles Mikolas pitched seven solid innings to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-5. Mikolas gave up a run, five hits and a walk while striking out seven. He dropped his ERA to 2.99, and he got his first victory in five starts against the Pirates this season. Mikolas struck out five straight in one stretch, and the Cardinals improved to 21-8 in his starts.

UNDATED (AP) — It’s not unusual to see Iowa’s defense ahead of its offense in the middle of September. But the difference between those two units has likely never been starker. Through two games, Iowa has one of the best defense in America and one of the worst offenses. Coach Kirk Ferentz says there is always something to work out. The Hawkeyes host Northern Iowa on Saturday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — For all the progress Iowa State has made under coach Matt Campbell, the offensive line has long been a sore spot. The Cyclones showed in their opener that their rebuilt line has yet to find itself. Iowa State gained just 188 yards in a 13-3 loss to Iowa. No. 5 Oklahoma is up next for the Cyclones.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Adams hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to rally the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-7 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. The Cardinals have won two in a row and lead the Los Angeles Dodgers by two games in the battle for the last wild spot in the NL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — White Sox reliever Jeanmar Gomez threw away a bunt in the 10th inning, giving the Kansas City Royals a 4-3 win over Chicago. Brian Goodwin led off the Royals 10th with a sharp double. Alcides Escobar then bunted and Gomez made a wild toss over third baseman Yolmer Sanchez, letting Goodwin score.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game because of a hamstring problem. The Cardinals held the second NL wild-card spot going into their game at home against Pittsburgh. The nine-time All-Star felt tightness in his left hamstring while running the bases on Wednesday in Washington.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Scott Frost says quarterback Adrian Martinez is day-to-day with a right knee injury and that it might not be known until game time whether he’ll be able to play against Troy on Saturday. Martinez was injured in the 33-28 loss to Colorado. Frost says video of the play raised suspicions that a Colorado defender intentionally hurt the knee after Martinez went down. Video was sent to the Big Ten and Pac-12 offices for review.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State quarterback Kyle Kempt is considered “day-to-day” with a knee injury and it is unknown whether he will play Saturday against No. 5 Oklahoma. Coach Matt Campbell says Kempt injured the MCL in his left knee in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 13-3 loss to Iowa. He says the injury is not considered a long-term issue and the Cyclones dodged a “big bullet.” The game will be the Big 12 opener for both the Cyclones, who are 0-1, and the Sooners, who are 2-0.

Iowa boy who wanted racing stickers for his casket dies

News, Sports

September 10th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — An 11-year-old Iowa boy who wanted racing stickers to cover his casket has died. Michael Sytsma, of Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, says Caleb Hammond died Monday. He declined to say where.

(A-P file photo) – In this Aug. 18, 2018, file photo, 11-year-old Caleb Hammond grins before heading out in a stock car designed for children on the Southern Iowa Speedway dirt track in Oskaloosa.

Caleb’s stepmother, Kaylee Hammond, posted a photo of the boy on her Facebook page and said in a post Saturday that he had taken a turn for the worse Friday. His family brought him home to Oskaloosa, about 55 miles southeast of Des Moines, after determining the painful leukemia treatments he’d been undergoing at a Des Moines hospital weren’t working and other options offered little hope.

Race drivers and others answered his call for the stickers, and he was even given a chance to drive a race car at a local track, under the guidance of a 12-year-old racer.

Cardinals Activate Adam Wainwright From Disabled List

Sports

September 10th, 2018 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS, MO – September 10, 2018 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon that they have activated right-handed pitcher Adam Wainwright (right elbow inflammation) from the 60-day disabled list and he will draw the start in tonight’s series opener with Pittsburgh, his first start for St. Louis since May 13.   The team also announced that right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha (left oblique strain) has been moved from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Wainwright, 37, who was unscored upon in six injury rehabilitation appearances (17.0 IP), owns a career-mark of 147-84 with a 3.30 ERA, including a 1-3 record and 4.00 ERA in four starts this season.   Wainwright fanned seven in 5.0 shutout innings for Memphis (AAA) in his final rehab start on Sept. 1 at Nashville, throwing 90 pitches.

In his 14th season, all with the Cardinals, Wainwright enters tonight’s start ranked 5th all-time among Cardinals in wins (147) and 2nd in strikeouts (1,598).

Wainwright missed a total of 105 games while on the disabled list.   Wacha has missed 71 games since making his last appearance with St. Louis on June 20.
