Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes is off to a record-setting start for the surprising Chiefs. Mahomes threw for six touchdowns in a 42-37 victory over Pittsburgh and now has 10 touchdown passes through two games, the most ever through the first two weeks of the season. Pittsburgh’s defense rarely slowed the Chiefs down and looked a step behind while giving up six touchdown passes for the second time in the franchise’s 86-year history.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched two-hit ball over six innings for his first win in five months, Marcell Ozuna homered and the St. Louis Cardinals salvaged the finale of a four-game series with a 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cardinals snapped a season-high four-game losing streak and moved into a tie for the second National League wild card with the Dodgers, who slipped a half-game behind Colorado for the NL West lead.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Austin hit one of Minnesota’s four home runs, made a spectacular catch while flipping into the dugout and helped the Twins to a 9-6 victory over the Royals on Sunday that avoided a four-game sweep. Kyle Gibson earned the win despite a shaky start, and Royals reliever Jerry Vasto was saddled with the loss after a lousy performance in relief.

Mahomes throws 6 TDs, Chiefs hold off Steelers 42-37

Sports

September 16th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Patrick Mahomes tied a franchise record with six touchdown passes and the Kansas City Chiefs put on an impressive offensive display in a 42-37 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Mahomes finished 23 of 28 for 326 yards in his third career start as the Chiefs (2-0) won in Pittsburgh for the first time since 1986. Mahomes has 10 touchdown passes through two weeks, the most ever by a quarterback through two games in NFL history. Trevor Kelce caught seven passes for 109 yards and two scores. Tyreek Hill, Chris Conley, Kareem Hunt and Demarcus Robinson also hauled in touchdown passes as the Chiefs recovered in the second half after blowing an early 21-point lead.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger shook off an achy right elbow that limited him in practice during the week, completing 39 of 60 passes for 452 yards and three touchdowns. The 36-year-old also leapt into the end zone for a 3-yard score with 1:59 to go that got the Steelers (0-1-1) within five. Rather than attempt an onside kick, Pittsburgh sent it deep. Two runs by Hunt gave Kansas City a big first down and Steelers linebacker Tyler Matakevich was flagged for roughing the punter as the Chiefs ended a six-game losing streak in Pittsburgh.

It might be the first of several turnarounds by the Chiefs, who made the surprising decision trade away veteran Alex Smith in the offseason and place the franchise in the hands of untested but strong-armed Mahomes. So far, so very, very good. A week after throwing for four scores in a victory over the Chargers, Mahomes picked up right where he left off. He needed just 13 minutes to toss three touchdowns as the Chiefs built a quick 21-0 lead, the last one a flip in the flat to Hunt in which the running back walked through a tackle by rookie safety Terrell Edmunds and into the end zone.

The six touchdown passes by Mahomes tied the most ever allowed by the Steelers in franchise history. Buffalo Bills Hall of Famer Jim Kelly threw six against Pittsburgh in 1991. … Pittsburgh tight end Jesse James set a career-high with 138 yards receiving. … Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown caught nine passes for 67 yards, becoming the fastest player in NFL history to cross the 750-career reception total (117 games). … Roethlisberger moved past John Elway and into seventh for career passing yards. … The Chiefs scored six touchdowns and had just 27:49 time of possession. Their longest scoring drive lasted just 3:57. … Mahomes’ six scores tied Len Dawson’s franchise mark set in 1964 against Denver when the Chiefs played in the American Football League.
INJURIES:
Chiefs: Get well Eric Berry. The veteran safety remains out with a sore heel and Kansas City’s defensive backfield hasn’t exactly stepped up in his absence. The Chiefs have allowed 870 yards in the air through two games. Part of the blame — if that’s the word — can be placed on opponents playing catch-up after getting buried early by Mahomes and company.
UP NEXT:
Chiefs: Welcome San Francisco to Arrowhead Stadium in their 2018 home opener next Sunday.

Sports

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Three plus three equals three. That’s math that works for the Iowa football team. With a dominant 38-14 win against Northern Iowa on Saturday night at Kinnick Stadium, that makes three games, three impressive defensive efforts and three emphatic wins to send the Hawkeyes (3-0) into Big Ten Conference play with an undefeated record for the second straight year. Iowa hosts No. 6 Wisconsin next Saturday. Wisconsin should drop a bit in the rankings, but it’ll still be an electric atmosphere for a night game in Kinnick.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kyler Murray threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns and fifth-ranked Oklahoma held off Iowa State 37-27 in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Marquise Brown had 191 yards receiving and a TD for the Sooners, who extended the nation’s longest road winning streak to 17 games while avenging a stunning home loss to the Cyclones a year ago.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — B.J. Smith scored on a 26-yard run midway through the fourth quarter and Will Sunderland made an interception in the final 3 minutes, giving Troy the cushion it needed to beat Nebraska 24-19 and denying new Cornhuskers coach Scott Frost his first win. The Huskers have lost their first two games for the first time since 1957 and have dropped six straight home games since beating Rutgers last September. Troy knocked off LSU last year and has beaten power-five opponents two straight years.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yasiel Puig homered three times and had a career-high seven RBIs, giving him five homers in two games, and the Los Angeles Dodgers routed St. Louis 17- 4 to move into first place in the National League West. Puig hit a solo homer in the fourth off John Gant and three-run drives in the fifth against Mike Mayers and in the seventh versus Luke Weaver. Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer in the ninth off Luke Weaver and had a career-high six RBIs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ian Kennedy pitched six innings to earn his first win since the first week of April, Alex Gordon drove in five runs and the Royals beat the Twins 10-3 on Saturday night. Alcides Escobar added three RBIs while finishing a homer shy of the cycle, and Cam Gallagher ended a 0-for-14 skid with a career-best four hits for Kansas City. The Twins will try to avoid a four-game sweep in the series finale today (Sunday).

Drake rides Kraemer’s 6 TDs to 52-12 win over Missouri S&T

Sports

September 15th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Grant Kraemer passed for 359 yards and six touchdowns before taking a seat midway through the third quarter and Drake rolled to a 52-12 victory over Division II member Missouri S&T in the Bulldogs’ home opener on Saturday.

Kraemer connected with Drew Lauer, who broke several tackles for a 58-yard score on the Bulldogs’ first possession, and Kraemer used just one play to hook up with Mitch McFarlane for a 65-yard score on their second drive for a 14-0 lead. Kraemer found Devin Cates for two short second-quarter scores, sandwiched around Aaron Moya’s 3-yard TD run for the Miners, for a 28-6 halftime lead. Kraemer hit 11 of 12 passes for 269 yards by halftime, and his only incompletion was an interception.

Kraemer had his fifth TD pass two plays into the third quarter on a 50-yard strike to Steven Doran and then found McFarlane for a second time from 12 yards out to make it 42-6 — ending Kraemer’s day. Danny Donley’s 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and a 26-yard interception return by Will Warner capped the scoring for Drake (1-1).

Rod Chapman returned a punt 82 yards for a score on the final play of the game for Missouri A&T.

Murray and No. 5 Oklahoma hold off Iowa State 37-27

Sports

September 15th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kyler Murray threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns and No. 5 Oklahoma held off Iowa State 37-27 on Saturday in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
Marquise Brown had 191 yards receiving and a TD for the Sooners (3-0, 1-0 Big 12), who extended the nation’s longest road winning streak to 17 games while avenging a stunning home loss to the Cyclones a year ago.

Iowa State (0-2, 0-1) didn’t make it easy for the Sooners, rallying from a 14-point deficit to make it 34-27 late in the third quarter. But the Sooners killed nearly eight minutes on a drive that ended with a 42-yard field goal from Austin Siebert with 2:51 left, and Parnell Motley’s interception with 1:11 to go sealed.

Backup Zeb Noland threw for a career-high 360 yards and a pair of long touchdown passes to Hakeem Butler for the Cyclones (0-2, 0-1), who were without starting quarterback Kyle Kempt (knee). Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said Kempt will also miss next week’s game.

The Cyclones offense showed some life after a dismal showing last week in a 13-3 loss to Iowa — led by Butler’s 174 yards receiving. But what should be troubling for the rest of the Big 12 is that this was a pretty good defense that Murray and the Sooners carved up. Oklahoma gained 519 yards against the Cyclones, who allowed just 20.9 points a game in 2017.
