Sports

May 27th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DENVER (AP) — Rookie Antonio Senzatela threw eight sharp innings to grab a share of the major league lead in wins, Charlie Blackmon had a homer and run-scoring single as part of an eight-run eighth and the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-0 on Friday night.

Fresh off a 7-3 road swing, the Rockies kept right on rolling behind Senzatela, who joins Clayton Kershaw, Dallas Keuchel and Ervin Santana with seven victories this season. Senzatela (7-1) scattered five hits and showed plenty of poise as the 22-year-old escaped trouble courtesy of four double plays.

Carlos Martinez (3-4) gave up three runs in 7 1/3 innings while striking out nine.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Ryan Erickson pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings and Iowa beat top-seeded Nebraska 2-0 Friday in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten baseball tournament.

Erickson (3-3) struck out six in holding back the top-seeded Cornhuskers (35-19-1), who had scored 36 runs in their previous two games. Nebraska loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth and ninth innings but instead got shut out for just the second time this season.

Chris Whelan hit a solo homer and Jake Adams had an RBI single, providing Iowa (36-19) with all the offense it would need. Nebraska finished with 12 hits — but just one came with a runner in scoring position.

May 26th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say a 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of pulling a gun on Iowa tight end Noah Fant. Fant, a graduate of Omaha South High School, told police he was threatened Tuesday night while he was in a northwest Omaha park near his home. Fant says a man he recognized came up to his car window, pointed a gun at him and told him to leave.

Police say they saw Matthew Trimble run into a garage and that he later admitted to confronting Fant. Trimble has been charged with making terroristic threats.

Fant played in six games last season as a freshman for the Hawkeyes, making nine catches for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Maeda rallies Dodgers to 7-3 win over Cardinals

Sports

May 26th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kenta Maeda fell into a 3-0 hole in the first inning of his first start for the Dodgers in two weeks coming off the disabled list. Then, the Japanese right-hander rallied Los Angeles to a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night in the series finale.

Maeda (4-2) drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-out single in the fourth off Michael Wacha and turned an inning-ending double play in the fifth to help the Dodgers take two of three from the Cardinals.

Maeda allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings, struck out four and walked two. He missed 13 games with a tight left hamstring while on the DL since May 11. Maeda got off to a rocky start in his return, giving up Jedd Gyorko’s two-run double and Yadier Molina’s RBI single in the first. The Dodgers took over from there.
