A brother of slain Iowa college student Mollie Tibbets played through his grief and led his high school football team to victory in the season opener. The Des Moines Register reports that Scott Tibbetts threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom High School beat Lisbon High 35-24 on Friday night in Lisbon. The win came less than 48 hours before a memorial service Sunday for his 20-year-old sister. Lisbon officials complied with their opponents’ wishes that there be no displays or tributes regarding Mollie Tibbetts. The visitors wore jerseys with a small honor: teal wings with the initials “MT” in a heart. The wings will remain there all season. Scott Tibbetts declined to comment after the game.

Shane Bieber only went 5 1/3 innings, but he was good enough to help the Indians snap a four-game skid. The Royals got homers from Whit Merrifield, Salvador Perez and Lucas Duda.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — True freshman Adrian Martinez has been named Nebraska’s starting quarterback for the opener against Akron. Martinez beat out redshirt freshman Tristan Gebbia in a close competition. He was the prize of Scott Frost’s first recruiting class at Nebraska, signing with the Cornhuskers after de-committing from Tennessee. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder from Fresno, California, will be the first true freshman in program history to start an opener at quarterback.

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Scott Dixon hasn’t done anything wrong the past three IndyCar races, finishing in the top five in each of them. But that hasn’t prevented his lead in the IndyCar championship chase from shrinking from 62 to 26 points over fast-finishing Alexander Rossi, or from allowing Indy 500 winner Will Power to sneak into contention.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Robert Streb won the Web.com Tour Finals-opening Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to regain full PGA Tour status, beating Peter Malnati with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

DENVER (AP) — Matt Carpenter led off the game with a double to right. It was the start of a double feature — a big day for him and another big series win for the Cardinals. Carpenter tied a St. Louis record with four doubles, pitcher Austin Gomber had a two-run infield single in a six-run first inning and the Cardinals routed the Colorado Rockies 12-3 on Sunday.

Carpenter matched a franchise mark that Joe “Ducky” Medwick set on Aug. 4, 1937, against the Boston Bees (now Braves). Carpenter doubled twice in the first, had another in the third and lined his fourth in the seventh on a day when St. Louis pounded out 16 hits. The first baseman wound up 4 for 5 with two RBIs.

The Cardinals took two of three from the Rockies in a series between NL playoff contenders. It was the ninth straight series St. Louis has captured.

Atlantic Head Coach Michelle Blake thoughts on opening day: “Saturday was the first true test of the way our season is going to pan out. The game of volleyball is a game of runs and we have to continue to extend our runs throughout games and continue to compete each and every point. The girls did a lot of great things on Saturday but we still have things we need to work on. They continue to surprise with their resiliency. We came out strong in the first match again TJ and played well. TJ exploited some of our weaknesses and then took advantage of that. The next two matches (Riverside and Earlham) were very similar matches. We fought tooth and nail in both of those matches, coming out on top in the match against Riverside and then falling just short of win #2 against Earlham. We came out in consolation play and defeated Essex in two sets and then fell to CAM in our last match of the day.”

DENVER (AP) — Pinch-hitter Matt Holliday launched his first home run of the season in the seventh inning, Carlos Gonzalez sparked an eight-run eighth with a tiebreaking double and the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-1 in a matchup of NL playoff contenders. The loss snapped St. Louis’ nine-game road winning streak. The surging Cardinals had won four straight and eight of 10 overall.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy decided against using starters in what is normally a dress rehearsal preseason game, and backup quarterback Chase Daniel made like a starter by leading three first-half touchdown drives in a 27-20 victory over Kansas City.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Rookie Heath Fillmyer pitched six strong innings, Lucas Duda homered and the Kansas City Royals beat Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians 7-1. Fillmyer limited the AL Central leaders to three hits and two walks, striking out three, as the Indians lost their fourth straight, matching their longest skid of the season. Kansas City pounded out 14 hits, nine against Kluber, who went 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs with two walks and six strikeouts.

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Will Power got the fuel strategy right to win Saturday night’s IndyCar race at Gateway Motorsports Park, giving team owner Roger Penske another win at the track and keeping his championship hopes alive. The Indy 500 winner took a splash of fuel late in the race, allowing Power to go wide open. That was enough to stay in front of Alexander Rossi, who tried to conserve fuel for more than 60 laps and wound up making one less stop to finish second.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Yohan Croizet scored his second MLS goal and Johnny Russell had two assists to help Sporting Kansas City beat Minnesota United 2-0. Tim Melia had eight saves in his fourth consecutive shutout and career-best 11th of the season.

CHICAGO (AP) — Bears coach Matt Nagy decided to rest starters for the next-to-last preseason game rather than use it as the customary regular-season tuneup. And the backups proved that they’re also ready for the regular season. Backup quarterback Chase Daniel directed touchdown drives on the first three possessions and the Bears defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 27-20 on Saturday. The Bears (2-2) played in the Hall of Fame Game and have been practicing since July 20, and Nagy liked what he’d seen from the starters in practices. So he decided Friday to keep starters out of what normally would be a dress rehearsal for the regular-season opener at Green Bay on Sept. 9. Daniel replaced Mitchell Trubisky against the Chiefs (1-2), the team Nagy last year served as the offensive coordinator. Playing against both the Chiefs starting defense and then the backups, Daniel led the Bears to a 24-10 halftime lead.

Daniel, a Chiefs backup quarterback from 2013-15, finished 15 of 18 for 198 yards and two touchdowns. The first two Bears touchdown drives came against Kansas City’s starting defense, minus injured safety Eric Berry and four other injured players. Wide-open receiver Kevin White caught Daniel’s 29-yard TD pass in the first quarter to break a 7-7 tie, and Daniel then found Javon Wims for a 7-yard TD pass in the back corner of the end zone and a 21-10 lead. Benny Cunningham ran in from 13 yards for Chicago’s first TD and Cody Parkey added a 48-yard field goal just before halftime. The Bears sat out 31 players, including all potential opening-day starters except wide receiver Taylor Gabriel, defensive end Jonathan Bullard, linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski and guard Eric Kush. Nagy informed players on Friday morning about his decision.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II and the starting offense played into the third quarter against the backup Bears defense, and showed inconsistency. Mahomes flipped a short pass to the right side and Kareem Hunt turned it into a 19-yard TD for a 7-7 tie, and led a 49-yard drive ending in Harrison Butker’s second-quarter 47-yard field goal. In the previous preseason game, Mahomes completed a 69-yard TD pass to Tyreek Hill. Mahomes didn’t produce a big play on Saturday, and finished 18 of 24 for 196 yards. He left the game with the Chiefs down 24-10 in the third quarter. Wide receiver Marcus Kemp got loose for a 55-yard TD pass from Chase Litton with 2:40 to play for Kansas City’s other touchdown.

Nagy and his mentor, Chiefs coach Andy Reid, shared a long hug and a few words a few moments after the game at midfield. Nagy also had a long talk after the game with Mahomes, who started a game for the Chiefs last year as a rookie. There were no protests during the anthem. As far as injuries, Bears wide receiver Marlon Brown left in the second quarter with a possible concussion and did not return. … Bears reserve tackle Bradley Sowell was assisted from the field in the fourth quarter with a leg injury. … Berry (heel), defensive end Allen Bailey (knee) and cornerback Steven Nelson (concussion) all missed the game for Kansas City. NEXT UP for the Chiefs: Close the preseason Thursday by hosting the Green Bay Packers.

Atlantic competed in the Glenwood Cross Country Meet on Saturday. Taylor McCreedy took 2nd in the Girls race and Karsyn Rush was 8th. Atlantic finished 3rd in the team race behind Glenwood and Harlan.

On the boys side Jalen Petersen was 4th individually and the Trojans finished 5th as a team.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ryan O’Hearn and Hunter Dozier hit back-to-back home runs leading off the ninth against Cleveland closer Cody Allen to lift the Kansas City Royals over the Indians 5-4. After a broken water pipe near the outfield fountains led to a half-hour delay in the fourth, the Royals and Indians put on a splashy finish. Cleveland’s Yonder Alonso hit his second homer of the game in the eighth, a two-run shot for a 4-3 lead. O’Hearn and Dozier then rescued Kansas City from a sixth straight loss.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A game between the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians was delayed 30 minutes after a pipe burst near Kauffman Stadium’s iconic outfield fountains, causing flooding on the right field warning track. Water began leaking onto the field in the top of the fourth inning. Relievers in the Royals bullpen yelled to alert stadium officials to the problem, triggering the stoppage.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas basketball fans hoping to see coach Bill Self rappel over a seven-story building this weekend will be disappointed. Self announced in May that he would go “Over the Edge” of a downtown Lawrence building to help raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence. The Lawrence Journal-World reports Self said in a statement Friday that he’s been sidelined by a minor hernia repair. Self says he plans to watch the event and will come through with his pledge to raise $10,000 for the charity.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has suspended four freshmen indefinitely for what he calls “multiple incidents of poor choices and behavior.” Newcomers Tayvonn Kyle, Jaeveyon Morton, Joseph Scates and Dallas Taylor-Cortez won’t be involved in team activities or have access to Iowa State’s athletic facilities. Campbell says it was a pattern of conduct rather than a single incident. The Cyclones open the season at home Sept. 1 against South Dakota State.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska running back Tre Bryant is giving up football because of chronic knee pain. Coach Scott Frost says Bryant had difficulty sleeping. Bryant set career highs with 31 carries for 192 yards against Arkansas State last year and followed that with 20 carries for 102 yards against Oregon. He was injured against Oregon and didn’t play again. Frost said Bryant looked good in practices and he was in line to get playing time this season.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — IndyCar driver Robert Wickens underwent surgery this week on his right arm and lower extremities and tests showed the Canadian does not have additional injuries following his crash at Pocono last weekend. Wickens had surgery to stabilize a fracture associated with a spinal cord injury. IndyCar says the severity of that injury is still unknown. IndyCar says Wickens will require additional corrective surgery and rehabilitation. He remains hospitalized in Pennsylvania.

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — The starts of recent IndyCar races at Mid-Ohio and Pocono have been a bit shaky, even though the drivers leading the field to green have been cleared of wrongdoing. Still, as the season winds down and the intensity ramps up, it seems that everybody is riding a fine line when the green flag first flies.
