IHSAA Executive Director Alan Beste announces retirement for July 2019

Sports

August 31st, 2018 by admin

BOONE, Iowa – A highly successful leader in the history of Iowa high school activities, Iowa High School Athletic Association executive director Alan Beste has announced his retirement, effective July 10, 2019. Beste’s retirement caps 30 years of dedicated service to Iowa students and IHSAA member schools. The 62-year-old has been executive director since February 1, 2015.

The IHSAA Board of Control will accept his retirement at its regular meeting in September. Beste informed the staffs of the IHSAA and Iowa Hall of Pride on Thursday.
“I am proud to have had the opportunity to lead the IHSAA, but of equal importance, I have been able to serve our member schools, students, and officials for 30 years,” Beste said. “While some of the days were long, the days have gone by quickly. Rarely did I think of what I did as ‘going to work.’ Instead, it was more like being able to live out my passion for education-based athletics and activities.”
Greg Darling, chairman of the Board of Control and superintendent of Humboldt Community School District, indicated the Board has established a timeline and search process for hiring a new executive director.
“We appreciate and commend Alan for his leadership as an assistant director and as executive director,” Darling said. “He has led the IHSAA with vision and passion while teaching us that a student-athlete’s health and safety should be our top priority.
“Thanks to Alan’s guidance, Iowa has led the way nationally with initiatives to make athletics safer, as evidenced by the work done on weight management, concussion management, and safety plans to student-athletes and spectators.”
Considered a “humble leader” by co-workers, Beste attributes his success at the IHSAA to predecessors, mentors, and the office’s staff. He worked alongside the Association’s two previous executive directors, Bernie Saggau and Rick Wulkow, then collaborated constantly with IHSAA staff, member school administrators, and student participants.
“My wife Donna, our children, and now their families have been my strongest supporters, but they have sacrificed much to allow me to pursue my passion,” Beste said. “I have missed a lot of family gatherings since 1989 because they allowed my career to come first. Now is the time for me to put them first.”
Beste left Pleasant Valley for the IHSAA in 1989 after seven years as a teacher and athletic trainer. He became the Boone office’s first Wellness Coordinator and helped establish significant benchmarks in student-athlete wellness and safety, serving the IHSAA and National Federation of State High School Associations in sports medicine and health, coaching education, swimming, tennis, and wrestling.
Among Beste’s honors as an IHSAA administrator and the organization’s fifth executive director: NFHS Outstanding Service Award, NFHS Citation, membership in multiple NFHS advisory and rules committees, the Outstanding Sports Medicine Award from the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association, induction into the Iowa Athletic Trainers’ Society’s Hall of Honor, creation of the IHSAA’s Governor’s Scholar Recognition program and Citizen-Leadership poster program, and the development of collaborative programs with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, the Iowa Cheerleading Coaches Association, and the Iowa Association of Student Councils.
A native of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, Beste received a bachelor’s degree in health education from St. Cloud State and a master’s in health and physical education from Northwest Missouri State. He is an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boone and serves on the board of Boone’s Educational Endowment Foundation, the Iowa Sports Foundation’s board of directors, and is former chairperson of the Boone County FORCE (Foundation Offering Recreation and Community Enrichment).
Beste’s wife of 35 years, Donna, is a teacher in Boone. They have raised two children, Kyle (Melanie) Beste, and Megan (Kasey) Deaver, and are the proud grandparents of Emelyn Beste.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Harrison Bader and John Gant hit back-to-back home runs, Gant pitched into the sixth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0. The Cardinals have won 17 of 21 and took their tenth consecutive series, their longest series winning streak since 2009, when they also won ten in a row. Pirates starter Joe Musgrove opened the game with 21 consecutive strikes, a first in the majors since pitch tracking began in 1988, according to Stats.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Rookie safety Armani Watts intercepted two passes and Makinton Dorleant returned another pick for a touchdown as the Chiefs beat the Packers 33-21. Both teams rested their starters in their preseason finale. DeShone Kizer started for Green Bay and threw for 57 yards with a touchdown and a pick as the new backup to Aaron Rodgers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have agreed to trade offensive lineman Parker Ehinger to the Dallas Cowboys for cornerback Charvarius Ward, a person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade will not become official until Friday, the last day before roster cuts.

DENVER (AP) — Some old and some new in the AFC West. Jon Gruden is back in Oakland. Philip Rivers is ready to lead a Chargers comeback. The Chiefs turn their dynamic offense over to Patrick Mahomes II. Von Miller is re-energized by the addition of a new pass rush partner in Denver.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Scott Frost makes his head coaching debut at Nebraska when Akron visits Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Saturday night. Frost carries the hopes of a fan base demanding a return to national relevance eventually but first respectability in the Big Ten. The Cornhuskers finished 4-8 last season and fired coach Mike Riley. Akron is coming off a 7-7 season and an appearance in the Mid-American Conference championship game.

Iowa college football fans warned about fake tix, bogus merchandise

News, Sports

August 30th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The football teams at all three of Iowa’s public universities open their seasons on Saturday and fans are warned to be careful if they’re trying to buy gameday tickets, t-shirts and other merchandise. Susan Buck, spokeswoman for the Better Business Bureau, says to beware of buying anything from unknown or unreliable online retailers. “They’re just trying to scam you for your credit card information or your personal information or they’re selling counterfeit merchandise, which is also something you want to steer clear of,” Buck says.

Before you buy a Hawkeye hat, a Cyclone jersey or a Panther sweatshirt, Buck says to look for the telltale signs that may reveal a scam or counterfeit company. “Poor website design and sloppy English,” Buck says. “If it’s a legitimate company with an established website, they’re not going to have spelling errors and grammatical errors on their website.”

The site may offer discounted prices and free shipping to save you some cash, but Buck says it’s likely best to punt. “You are kind of taking a leap of faith and that’s why it’s really important to do your research first, before you hand over your credit card number,” she says.

If the website looks fishy, it’s best to move on and find another one. Iowa’s three state schools all have official websites for apparel. See those links below:

Williams, Marte lead Pirates to 2-0 win over Cardinals

Sports

August 30th, 2018 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Trevor Williams figured he might be in for a long night.

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ right-hander surrendered a walk and a double to the first two St. Louis hitters he faced Wednesday.

“It was a little terrifying,” Williams admitted.

The hottest pitcher in the National League had no reason to worry.

Williams bounced back from the rough beginning to record six strong innings, Starling Marte had an RBI single in the sixth, and the Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0.

Williams (11-9) gave up three hits while striking out a career-high eight— all swinging.

“He did a great job hitting the corners,” St. Louis shortstop Paul DeJong said. “His ball was moving a lot of different ways.”

Williams has allowed just four earned runs over his last eight starts and improved to 5-2 with an 0.75 ERA during that stretch. He has a major-league best eight starts of at least five innings without allowing a run.

“He had to roll up his sleeves in that first inning,” Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. “He doesn’t get mauled at the plate and he’s tough to square up. His fastball was especially effective tonight.”

Williams got out of the early jam with two strikeouts and a nifty over-the-shoulder catch by second baseman Adam Frazier.

“He doesn’t make that play, you never know what happens after that,” Williams said. “We were just executing pitches from there on.”

Marte lifted a bloop single to left field off Miles Mikolas (13-4) to bring in Jordy Mercer with the first run. Gregory Polanco followed with a run-scoring single to help Pittsburgh win for just the second time in eight games.

“We got some hits, got some action in that inning,” Hurdle said.

Edgar Santana and Keone Kela each pitched an inning, and Felipe Vazquez got the last three outs to complete the five-hitter and get his 28th save in 32 chances.

Polanco, Frazier, and Corey Dickerson had two hits each for the Pirates.

The Cardinals, who dropped to 16-4 in their last 20, are now 4 1/2 games behind first-place Chicago in the NL Central. They hold the first wild card spot and have a half-game lead over Milwaukee.

St. Louis fell to 27-13 under manager Mike Shildt, who took over for Mike Matheny on July 15. Shildt was rewarded with a two-year contract on Tuesday.

Mikolas gave up two runs and eight hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked one.

“I think out of a couple hits they got, they hit one or two hard,” Mikolas said. “I don’t want to say I’m a victim of bad luck, but a couple of those, a couple of feet this way or that way, I don’t think they’re scoring at all.”

The Pirates are 12-19 after winning 11 straight from July 11-24.

St. Louis infielder Matt Carpenter left the game in the fourth inning with a stomach ailment.

UP NEXT

Pirates RHP Joe Musgrove (5-7, 3.56) will face St. Louis RHP John Gant (5-5, 3.76) in the final game of the three-game set on Thursday. Musgrove is 2-2 with 2.92 ERA in six road starts.
