Iowa State to wear helmet decals for slain golfer

Sports

September 18th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State football players will wear a decal on their helmets to honor slain school golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena during Saturday’s game against Akron. The Spanish golfer was found dead Monday morning in a pond at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames. Investigators say she was attacked earlier in the day while playing a round alone.
Barquin was Iowa State’s 2018 female athlete of the year. A homeless man has been charged in her death .

Football coach Matt Campbell said Tuesday had been a tough day for the community. He called Barquin’s death a “cowardly act of violence.” He says the helmet decal will feature Barquin’s initials and is the least the team can do to honor her.

Quarterback Zeb Noland says the death has hit the university’s athletes hard, and that he feels terrible. He says he wishes there was “more we could do to try pull the pain away from the people who truly, truly feel it.”

(Update) Ex-Iowa State golfer found dead at course; suspect charged

News, Sports

September 18th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A former Iowa State University golfer was found dead at a golf course Monday, and a man was charged with murder. Police said in a news release that 22-year-old Celia Barquin Arozamena was found dead Monday at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames and officers determined she had died after being assaulted. They said 22-year-old Collin Daniel Richards was charged with first-degree murder. Police said Richards has no known address.

Police were called to the golf course around 10:20 a.m. Monday after golfers found a golf bag with no one around it. Officers found a body some distance from the bag. Barquin Arozamena was the 2018 Big 12 champion and Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year. The university said the native of Puente San Miguel, Spain, was finishing her civil engineering degree this semester after exhausting her eligibility at Iowa State in 2017-2018. She was one of the most accomplished players in Cyclone golf history, the university said. In April, she became the second women’s golfer at Iowa State to earn medalist honors at a conference tournament when claiming the 2018 Big 12 Championship. She did it with a three-shot victory.

Barquin Arozamena, who was ranked No. 69 nationally by Golfweek, ended her career as a Cyclone with a fourth-straight NCAA Regional appearance and earned All-Big 12 Team honors for the third time — the second player in Iowa State’s history to do so. She became the third Cyclone women’s golfer to compete in the U.S. Women’s Open Championship, the university said. Iowa State President Wendy Wintersteen said in a statement on Twitter that she was “deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death” of Barquin Arozamena, describing her as a “dedicated civil engineering student” and an “acclaimed golfer with a bright future.”
Head women’s golf coach Christie Martens said in a release that Barquin Arozamena was “loved by all her teammates and friends” and was an “outstanding representative of our school.” “We will never forget her competitive drive to be the best and her passion for life,” Martens said.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — Kolten Wong hit the first of four St. Louis homers, Miles Mikolas won his third straight start and the Cardinals boosted their playoff push with an 11-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves. The NL East leaders took a third consecutive loss after winning a season-best six straight. They stayed 6½ games ahead in the division following Philadelphia’s loss, which reduced Atlanta’s magic number to seven.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes has every reason to celebrate his 23rd birthday. He threw six TD passes without an interception in a win over the Steelers on Sunday, setting a slew of records in the process, and has the Kansas City Chiefs off to a 2-0 start.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookie Jacob Stallings hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night. After Jordan Luplow grounded into a double play, Kevin Kramer walked and moved to second on Kevin Newman’s single. Stallings then singled into left field off Ben Lively, scoring Kramer. It was Stallings’ second career game-ending hit. The catcher also had one in 2016.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska football coach Scott Frost is keeping an eye on how his players are responding to the tough start to the season. He says he hasn’t seen signs of players giving up or having their own agendas. But he knows the 2017 team that collapsed at the end of the season had players going off in their own directions and the Huskers never recovered. The Huskers open Big Ten play this week at Michigan.
