ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tyler O’Neill hit a solo home run with two outs in the 10th inning and the St. Louis Cardinals held their playoff position, rallying past the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Saturday. Yadier Molina also homered for St. Louis, which began the day 1 ½ games ahead of Colorado for the second NL wild-card spot. The Cardinals, who have seven games remaining, started three games behind Milwaukee for the top wild-card slot. St. Louis won for the fifth time in six games. San Francisco has lost three in a row. O’Neill hit his ninth homer, connecting off Mark Melancon (0-3) to give the Cardinals their 11th walk-off win of the season. Carlos Martinez (8-6) pitched two scoreless innings.

Adam Wainwright, making his third start for St. Louis since elbow inflammation put him on the disabled list, gave up four earned runs on eight hits over 6 1-3 innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Molina tied it with a two-run homer off Dereck Rodriguez in the seventh inning. It was Molina’s 19th home run, but only his second at home. Aramis Garcia, who had four hits, gave the Giants a 3-2 lead with a two-run single off Wainwright in the seventh. Rodriguez, the son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez, gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Cardinals infielder Kolten Wong was held out of the lineup as a precautionary measure. He left Friday’s game with a sore hamstring and is listed as day-to-day. “(He’s) in pretty good shape,” manager Mike Shildt said. UP NEXT: Right-hand pitcher Miles Mikolas (16-4, 3.01) will face Left-hand Pitcher Andrew Suarez (7-11, 4.24), in the final game of the three-game series on Sunday. Mikolas is 16-0 when receiving two or more runs of support. Suarez is 3-2 with a 2.67 ERA in his last five starts.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State finally broke into the win column in 2018, relying on defense and its kicker to carry an underwhelming and, at times, uninspired offense. Zeb Noland threw for 233 yards and a touchdown, David Montgomery had 107 yards rushing and a score and Iowa State held off Akron 26-13 on Saturday for its first win of the season. Montgomery had all 16 of Iowa State’s carries in the first half. He was substituted out more than once in the second half, but Campbell didn’t sound too concerned after the game. “I think he’s fine. Just got dinged up a little bit. Just trying to be smart with it,” Campbell said. “I didn’t want to put ourselves in a situation where maybe he has a long term injury.” Montgomery finished with his first 100-yard game of 2018. Connor Assalley added four field goals for the Cyclones (1-2), but all of those kicks came inside the red zone ahead of a brutal stretch in the Big 12. Iowa State plays at No. 17 TCU next week, at Oklahoma State on Oct. 6 and hosts No. 12 West Virginia on Oct. 13.

The Cyclones offense struggled to turn yards into touchdowns — and it’s starting to become fair to wonder if not having a designated offensive coordinator is hurting them. Iowa State’s defense kept Akron out of the end zone after an early score following a fumble. It didn’t end up costing them against the Zips, but TCU will roll the Cyclones if they play like this next week in Fort Worth. Iowa State got off to a sleepy start, falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter after losing a fumble deep in its own territory. But Kene Nwangwu ripped off a 47-yard kickoff return, Montgomery kept his balance after a pass rusher nearly brought him down in the backfield and Noland found Hakeem Butler for a 24-yard TD to tie the game at 7-all. It was a sequence that proved to be crucial as Iowa State’s offense got largely bogged down after that.

The Cyclone Defense, which gave up 37 in a loss to a dynamic Oklahoma team last week, continues to be the program’s strong point. JaQuan Bailey had 3.5 tackles for loss and forced a fumble, and Lawrence White and Greg Eisworth each finished with nine overall tackles.

The Harlan girls and CB Thomas Jefferson boys teams came away with titles on Saturday at the Harlan Cross Country Invitational. Atlantic finished third in the team standings for both races. Atlantic’s Taylor McCreedy was runner-up in the girls race and Jalen Petersen was third in the boys race.

Harlan Boys XC 2018

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State honored slain golf star Celia Barquin Arozamena with an elaborate ceremony ahead of the Cyclones’ game against Akron on Saturday.
Iowa State’s band used a formation that spelled out Barquin’s initials, and both teams wore a decal on their helmets in her memory.

A tribute to Barquin played on a video screen before a moment of silence, and fans were also asked to wear yellow, one of Iowa State’s main colors and a nod to Barquin’s Spanish roots. Most of the roughly 60,000 fans in attendance complied with yellow and with golf shirts on a chilly morning in central Iowa.

Barquin, 22 and a native of Puente San Miguel, Spain, was killed on Monday while she played at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, a course that sits less than a mile east of Jack Trice Stadium.

Before her death, Iowa State had planned to honor Barquin on the field to celebrate her being chosen the school’s female athlete of the year. “I think it’s fantastic. The tribute is amazing. But ultimately, it would have been perfect if she could have been here for her tribute, which was going to happen anyway.” said Ed Hamilton, a retired police officer from nearby Ankeny.

Barquin, the Cyclones’ first conference champion in 25 years, was finishing up her degree at Iowa State and working toward her ultimate goal of becoming a professional golfer. Barquin competed in the U.S Women’s Open earlier this summer, and coach Christie Martens said she was approaching “the pinnacle of her career.”

“Iowa State fans are very loyal. We haven’t had too many winning football teams over the years. Yet the fans turn out. There’s a great loyalty here — but it spills into other sports as well,” said Iowa State fan Kent Hollrah of Denison, Iowa.

Collin Richards, also 22, has been charged with first-degree murder in Barquin’s death. Police said Richards stabbed Barquin and left her body in a pond on the course, where it was found after other golfers noticed her abandoned bag.

Cyclones coach Matt Campbell also wore an Iowa State golf hat on the sideline to show solidarity with his colleagues. “Be with all of us today Celia, your legacy will forever live on & we are forever grateful for your impact. Much love from your Cyclonitas,” Iowa State linebacker Willie Harvey tweeted earlier Saturday, using the nickname that Barquin had for her teammates.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have poured draft picks and free-agent money into building their offensive line, and so far it has paid off. Not only did the group help Kareem Hunt win the NFL’s rushing title last year, it has been nearly perfecting in protecting Patrick Mahomes. The group has allowed just two sacks through the first two weeks of the season.

VILAMOURA, Portugal (AP) — Sergio Garcia dedicated his round in the Portugal Masters to the Spanish women’s college golfer killed in Iowa. Celia Barquin Arozamena, the Big 12 champion this year for Iowa State, was found stabbed to death Monday. Garcia shot a 5-under 66, leaving the Spanish star three strokes behind leader Lucas Herbert

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Relatives of the 22-year-old Iowa man charged in the stabbing death of a top amateur golfer from Spain say they are “devastated.” Collin Richards’ family said Thursday that their “thoughts and prayers” are with those close to Iowa State University student Celia Barquin Arozamena, whose body was found Monday in a golf course pond. Richards is charged with first-degree murder in Barquin’s death. Officers found Barquin’s body in the pond near the ninth hole at a public golf course in Ames.

UNDATED (AP) — Losses in the first month of the college football season mean this could be a down year for the Big Ten Conference. Traditional powers Wisconsin, Michigan and Michigan State have lost out-of-conference games. There are only five unbeaten teams remaining, including No. 4 Ohio State playing at No. 10 Penn State.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will play Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 27 to make up for the Sept. 1 game against Akron canceled because of bad weather. Bethune-Cookman is a Football Championship Subdivision team in Florida that is 1-2 this season after losing to Florida Atlantic last Saturday. Nebraska will pay Bethune-Cookman a guarantee of $800,000.

The Exira-EHK Spartans built a 23 point lead in the first half and held on for a 52-34 win over the CAM Cougars on Friday night.

The Cougars started the game with an opening touchdown drive to take and early 6-0 lead. Nate Hensley hit DeShawn Carr on a 38yd touchdown pass. The Cougars then picked off the Spartans on the 15th play of their opening possession. The offense stalled though and the Spartans got it back an scored on an 8 yard touchdown pass from Josh Pettepier to Trey Nelson. A made PAT made it 7-6. The teams traded scores to make it 13-12 Spartans and then Exira-EHK went on their run. Exira-EHK racked up the next three scores to lead 35-12. That lead would be enough to hold up.

The Cougars got a nice drive to end the first half and climb within 35-18 but the Spartans struck on the first drive of the second half to push it to 42-18. The Cougars didn’t lay down though and got back within 11 with 2:44 left. The Spartans answered back though with a closing touchdown on a 37-yard run by Josh Pettepier to seal the win.

Exira-EHK improves to 5-0 on the season through a very tough schedule and take a stranglehold lead on the District 8 race with a 3-0 start. The Spartans host West Harrison next week.

CAM falls to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the district. The Cougars host Woodbine next week.
