February 13th, 2019 by admin

The CAM Cougars girls basketball team built a 20-point lead in the 2nd quarter and were able to hold off a strong charge from the Audubon Wheelers to win 73-67. The Cougars led the game 21-14 at the end of the first and built the advantage to 20 midway through the second. Audubon used the foul line to climb back within 10 by halftime at 41-31. The Cougars held a 62-54 lead by the end of the third and kept the Wheelers at bay in the final period.

After the game CAM Head Coach Joe Wollum said that second quarter was big, “Yeah early in that second quarter until about two minutes left in the half we saw some of the best basketball we’ve played all year. It was great to see the girls play that way.”

The game was full of big performances from star players as well. CAM standout senior Madison Gettler led all scorers with 25 points, 17 of those in the first half. Paige McAfee hit six 3-pointers and finished with 21 points on the night to help the Cougar cause. On the Wheelers’ side outstanding freshman Aleah Hermensen finished with 24 points before fouling out near the end of the contest. Leah Subbert had 19 for the Wheelers and also fouled out late in the game.

CAM advances to the Class 1A Region 7 Semifinals on Friday night. They will take on the Fremont-Mills Knights, who advanced with a 51-46 road win over Griswold. The Cougars and Knights will meet in Guthrie Center on Friday at 7:00pm. We’ll have coverage of that game on KJAN Friday night.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Barry Brown and Xavier Sneed each scored 16 points, and No. 18 Kansas State beat Texas 71-64 for its ninth straight Big 12 victory. Three other Wildcats scored in double figures, Dean Wade with 12 points, and Kamau Stokes and Makol Mawien with 11 apiece.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Emmitt Thomas announced his retirement Tuesday as the defensive backs coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, ending an NFL career that began as a Hall of Fame player and wound up spanning five decades. Thomas spent 13 seasons playing for the Chiefs, helping the organization to a pair of Super Bowl appearances and their only championship in 1970. The two-time All-Pro has been coaching since 1978, the past eight years in Kansas City.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri locked down on the final defensive possession and squeaked by Arkansas to win 79-78. The Tigers were up three points with 17 seconds remaining when Arkansas’ Daniel Gafford threw down an alley-oop dunk from Jalen Harris.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The organization that investigates accusations of sexual misconduct and abuse in sports in the U.S. has halted its probe into figure skater John Coughlin, the two-time national pairs champion who died by suicide last month. The U.S. Center for SafeSport said there was no reason to continue its probe into allegations sexual misconduct against Coughlin because its purpose is to “protect the sport community and other covered persons from the risks associated with sexual misconduct and abuse.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State guard Cartier Diarra sustained an injury to his hand that will require surgery, robbing the No. 18 Wildcats of their top backup as they cling to the Big 12 lead. Wildcats coach Bruce Weber says Diarra did not accompany the team on its trip to play at Texas.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — The Southeastern and Big Ten conferences have a series of matchups with ranked teams that will have a big impact atop the league standings. Those games include No. 1 Tennessee’s trip to No. 5 Kentucky as the headliner on the week’s AP Top 25 schedule as well as No. 11 Michigan State’s visit to No. 20 Wisconsin. The week also includes No. 2 Duke’s trip to No. 16 Louisville in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Fishing license sales dropped in 2018

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

February 12th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — A spokesman for the Iowa D-N-R, Mick Klemesrude says the sale of fishing licenses was down a bit in 2018. “I think if you look back we had kind of a really strange spring where I think we had snow all the way into middle April,” Klemesrude says. “And when you have some of those crazy fluctuations in temperatures we tend to not see some of the license sales that you would have if you have a nice, steady spring.”

There were 201-thousand-765 annual licenses sold — while some people decided to buy a three-year hunting or fishing license. Klemesrude says they sold 75-hundred of those type of fishing licenses, which he says is right around average. They sell anywhere form two to three thousand of the hunting licenses each year. The fees for hunting and fishing licenses went up starting January 1st and Klemesrude says they aren’t sure how that might impact sales. “We tried to do it as way where we don’t have sticker shock. We tried to keep all of those below a 20-percent increase,” according to Klemesrude. “We think Iowans will absorb that cost and keep going out there and enjoying everything.”

He says it has been 15 or more years since they raised the prices and most anglers and hunters supported the increase — because they know it will help them. “Our hunting and fishing areas are supported by license fees and the people who purchase those licenses, so its a benefit that goes right back to the user,” Klemesrude says. The D-N-R also offers a lifetime hunting or fishing license for anyone over the age of 65. “Those are pretty steady sales, and we would always joke with them that you have to make three to three-and-a-half years and you are ahead of the game,” Klemesrude says.

There were around 75-hundred lifetime fishing licenses sold in 2018 and nearly three-thousand lifetime hunting licenses.
