Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — As a rule five draft selection, Brad Keller was a surprising success with Kansas City last season. The rebuilding Royals are hoping to do it again with Chris Ellis and Sam McWilliams. Kansas City plucked Keller from the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the right-hander rewarded them with a stellar rookie season, going 9-6 with a 3.08 ERA while making 20 starts. He was named the organization’s pitcher of the year, and he’s going into 2019 as the team’s No. 2 starter behind Danny Duffy.
NEW YORK (AP) — Women’s basketball teams across the country found many different ways to honor cancer survivors this week as part of the Play4Kay initiative. Texas A&M and Iowa had their players wear names on their jerseys of people who had touched their lives and battled cancer.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kayla Goth scored 15 points, Peyton Williams posted a double-double and Kansas State overcame a 14-point second-half deficit to upset No. 15 Texas 69-60. Williams finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds, Jasauen Beard and Rachel Ranke each scored 11 and Kali Jones grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Jarron Cumberland scored 27 points, matching his career high with six 3-pointers, and Cincinnati swept its season series with Wichita State, beating the Shockers 72-62. The Bearcats took control with a late first-half run led by Cumberland, who scored 14 in the opening half.
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Rennia Davis made two free throws to break a tie with 52.6 seconds left as Tennessee edged Missouri 62-60 to win for the fifth time in its last six games. The score was tied at 60-all when Davis pulled down an offensive rebound and got fouled.
CHICAGO (AP) — Tulio Da Silva had 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks as Missouri State narrowly beat Loyola of Chicago 65-61. Jarred Dixon had 10 points for Missouri State, which earned its fourth straight win.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — AJ Green had 21 points as Northern Iowa beat Evansville 73-58. Trae Berhow had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Northern Iowa, which ended its five-game road losing streak.

Gustafson, No. 14 Iowa beat No. 7 Maryland 86-73

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa star Megan Gustafson is used to drawing a lot of attention on the court. So Sunday was just business as usual. Gustafson scored 24 of her 31 points in the second half, and No. 14 Iowa beat No. 7 Maryland 86-73 to move into a tie with the Terrapins atop the Big Ten. Gustafson also had 17 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (21-5, 12-3), who have won 10 of 11. She went 10 for 18 from the field and 11 for 12 at the free-throw line. Tania Davis scored 13 points for Iowa, which made 27 of 29 foul shots. Kathleen Doyle finished with 12.

Iowa beat Maryland for the first time since 1992. The last time the Hawkeyes faced a top-10 Terrapin team, Maryland won by 20. The Hawkeyes, barring a collapse that doesn’t appear to be coming, can start planning on hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. This was the kind of victory that should convince the committee that Iowa deserves a top-four seed.

Carleton also had seven rebounds as the Cyclones won the rebound battle 43-29.

Meredith Burkhall had 10 points on 5-for-5 as Iowa State finished at 49 percent for the game despite an 8-for-20 third quarter. Vivian Gray scored 31 points — two off her career high — for Oklahoma State (13-11, 4-9), losers of three straight. Ja’Mee Asberry added 14.

No. 23 Iowa St’s 3-point barrage beats No. 18 K-State, 78-64

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Iowa State was drilled at home by TCU a week ago, then had to sit around without another game until Saturday, left to brood over its uphill climb to get back into the Big 12 race.
The Cyclones finally released that pent-up angst against No. 18 Kansas State. Lindell Wigginton hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Talen Horton-Tucker buried six 3s and had 20, and the No. 23 Cyclones pulled away late for a 78-64 victory over the Big 12-leading Wildcats on Saturday to answer a chorus of critics that had been surfaced over the past seven days. The Cyclone had three double-figure scorers with Marial Shayok contributing 13 points and 13 boards. They went 14 of 24 from beyond the 3-point line, shooting right over Kansas State’s vaunted defense. And they dished out 19 assists while turning it over just 10 times.

Iowa State is right back in the Big 12 title picture after avenging its loss to the Wildcats at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones were coming off a surprising home loss to TCU, but otherwise they’ve won seven of their last nine games — including four of their last five on the road. Iowa State returns home to face Baylor on Tuesday night.

Wieskamp hits last-second 3-pointer, helps No. 21 Iowa win

Sports

February 17th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Iowa is living by the last-second shot these days. Joe Wieskamp banked in a 3-pointer from the corner with less than a second to play and the No. 21 Hawkeyes (20-5, 9-5 Big Ten) won their fourth straight game with a miraculous 71-69 win over Rutgers on Saturday. The game-winning shot came less than a week after Jordan Bohannon nailed a 23-foot, 3-pointer in the final second to beat Northwestern 80-79 last Sunday. Isaiah Moss added 17 points and Tyler Cook had 12 for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes turned the ball over 10 times in the opening 20 minutes and were 3 of 12 from long range. Moss was the only consistent scorer for Iowa, hitting 5 of 8 for 12 points. The game marked Fran McCaffrey’s fifth 20-win season at Iowa and the Hawkeyes are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015-16. Iowa is coming off a sub- .500 season. Iowa hosts No. 24 Maryland on Tuesday.
