March 9th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

A spot in the MVC championship game is up for grabs as Northern Iowa and Drake are set to face off this (Saturday) evening, in St. Louis. The teams split the regular season series at one win apiece. The teams last met on Feb. 9, when Northern Iowa made only four foul shots on six attempts while the Bulldogs hit 17 of 18 en route to a six-point victory. Tip-off at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis is at 5:05 p.m. CST

Drake’s Nick McGlynn has averaged 15.2 points and 8.3 rebounds while Tremell Murphy has put up 10.3 points and 6.1 rebounds. For the Panthers, AJ Green has averaged 14.9 points while Wyatt Lohaus has put up 9.9 points. Green has connected on 34.2 percent of the 193 3-pointers he’s attempted and has made 7 of 21 over his last five games. He’s also made 85.7 percent of his foul shots this season.

The Bulldogs have recently used assists to create buckets more often than the Panthers. Drake has 41 assists on 75 field goals (54.7 percent) across its previous three contests while Northern Iowa has assists on 30 of 63 field goals (47.6 percent) during its past three games. Drake is rated first among MVC teams with an average of 76 points per game.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Megan Gustafson scored 30 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to help No. 10 Iowa pull away late for a 70-61 victory over Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The regular-season runner-up Hawkeyes have won nine of their last 10 and will make their first semifinal appearance since 2014 on Saturday. Tenth-seeded Indiana was led by Ali Patberg with 25 points.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State star Marial Shayok is a game-time decision for a matchup against No. 8 Texas Tech because of a sprained pinkie toe. Shayok, who is averaging a team-high 18.7 points per game, injured his foot at practice. Texas Tech has won eight in a row and five of its last six by at least 15 points. The Red Raiders can clinch at least a share of their first Big 12 title with a win.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton and TCU have placed assistant basketball coaches on administrative leave after they allegedly took $6,000 bribes from an aspiring sports agent to send clients his way. Creighton’s Preston Murphy and TCU’s Corey Baker are on leave pending internal reviews by their schools. Yahoo Sports reported Christopher Dawkins is accused of paying the bribes. Neither is expected to be charged.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals’ Yadier Molina went 1 for 2 as a designated hitter, the 36-year-old’s first game since left knee surgery in mid-December. Molina is likely to be behind the plate on Saturday, catching Adam Wainwright against Houston _ about a week ahead of the original projection for him to catch. Molina is a nine-time All-Star and nine-time Gold Glove.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Wyatt Lohaus had 21 points as Northern Iowa narrowly beat Southern Illinois 61-58 in the Missouri Valley Conference Tourney quarterfinals. Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson announced he would be stepping down as coach of the Salukis after the loss.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Darrell Brown had 20 points as Bradley edged past Missouri State 61-58 in the Missouri Valley Conference Tourney quarterfinals. Brown, who converted all 10 of his foul shots, made two free throws with 8.3 seconds left for a four-point edge.

Gustafson stands tall as No. 10 Iowa holds off Indiana 70-61

Sports

March 8th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Megan Gustafson scored 30 points and grabbed 17 rebounds Friday to help No. 10 Iowa pull away late for a 70-61 victory over Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The Hawkeyes (24-6), the Big Ten regular-season runners-up, have won nine of their last 10 and will make their first semifinal appearance since 2014 on Saturday.

Tenth-seeded Indiana (20-12) was led by Ali Patberg with 25 points. Grace Berger added 13 points of the bench for last year’s WNIT champions. The 6-foot-3 Gustafson was simply too much for the smaller Hoosiers. She produced the highest point total in the tournament’s first nine games by going 11 of 19 from the field and matched the fifth-highest single-game rebounding total in tourney history. Gustafson also contributed four steals and four blocks.

The Hawkeyes stayed in control most of the game but struggled to put away the scrappy Hoosiers until the closing minutes. It was not a good look for a team trying to make a case to move up at least one seed line. But they still have a chance to improve their standing as they pursue their first Big Ten Tournament crown since 2001.

Gustafson drew nine fouls. … Makenzie Meyer scored all 12 of her points on 3s. … Hannah Stewart finished with nine points and 13 rebounds. … The Hawkeyes were 7 of 16 on 3s and 11 of 13 from the free-throw line.

Officials with the Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund say they are once again proud to bring Sean O’Brien back to Atlantic to put on a baseball pitching clinic for area 4th through 7th graders.  The clinics will be held each Sunday March 3rd through April 7th.  The Atlantic Trojan Baseball coaching staff will also help work with these kids that have an interest in pitching.  Baseball was Trevor’s favorite sport so we absolutely love to see kids enjoying the sport.

Fund spokesperson (Trevor’s mom) Melanie Petty says “Everything we are able to do for the community is because of people supporting us at our annual golf tournament.  The 11th Annual TFred Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Nishna Hills Golf Club in Atlantic on Saturday, August 11th.  If you’re not a golfer there is a silent auction held all day in the clubhouse so come out and see us!  All monies raised are given back to things that Trevor had an interest in.  We are blessed that we have had such wonderful support since Trev passed away and we look forward to doing more amazing things this coming year in his memory!”

The Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization.
