Big Ten Conference announces suspension of Wisconsin men’s basketball player Brad Davison and issues public reprimand

Sports

January 30th, 2020 by admin

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference office announced today that Wisconsin men’s basketball player Brad Davison has been suspended for one game and issued a public reprimand for violating the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy after he fouled an opposing player with 32 seconds remaining in the second half against Iowa on Jan. 27, 2020. Davison received a flagrant 1 personal foul from the game officials for his action. Davison is ineligible to play in Wisconsin’s next game on Feb. 1, 2020 against Michigan State.

“We expect all of our student-athletes to compete and play hard; however, they must always do so in a civil manner that is consistent with the rules of the game and in the spirit of good sportsmanship,” said Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren. “We will not tolerate behavior that compromises the health and safety of our student-athletes or crosses the line of aggressive, competitive play, especially when a pattern of similar behavior has been previously established.”

Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01 states in part that “The Big Ten Conference expects all contests involving a member institution to be conducted without compromise to any fundamental element of sportsmanship. Such fundamental elements include integrity of the competition, civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials.”

The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded.

Tyreke Key, Indiana State’s leading scorer at 17 points per game, was held to four points. Liam Robbins had 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Bulldogs. Jonah Jackson had 12 point and Garrett Sturtz had eight rebounds.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — MaCio Teague scored 15 points and No. 1 Baylor beat Iowa State 67-53. Mark Vital had eight points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Bears. Baylor used a 17-2 run midway through the second half to turn a five-point lead into a 59-41 edge with 7:43 left. Devonte Bandoo scored seven of his 12 points off the bench during the spurt, which came after Iowa State coach Steve Prohm was assessed a technical foul. Baylor has won 10 of its past 13 games against the Cyclones. Rasir Bolton led the Cyclones with 19 points and Tyrese Haliburton scored 16.

MIAMI (AP) — Kansas City is back in the Super Bowl 50 years after Chiefs coach Hank Stram cracked up the football world by agreeing to be wired for sound for the big game highlight film. And the way we think of highlights will never be the same. NFL Films took a risk in asking Stram to wear the microphone during Kansas City’s 23-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl 4. It was the first time it had ever been done in the Super Bowl. What came out of it was video gold. The highlight video is now a classic. It’s highlighted by Stram’s stream-of-consciousness patter that was delivered to players, assistants and the refs. These days, highlight films are filled with players and coaches mic’d up, but few can do what Stram did the last time the Chiefs were in the big game.

MIAMI (AP) — It’s common for coordinators in the Super Bowl to have a head coaching position with a new team waiting for them after the game. Not this year. The Kansas City Chiefs have perhaps the most dynamic offense in the NFL and the San Francisco 49ers feature one of the stingiest defenses in the league. The men in charge of both units got interviews but were passed over. Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy interviewed with the Panthers, Browns and Giants during the team’s bye before the playoffs. Niners defensive coordinator Robert Saleh also interviewed with the Browns.

MIAMI (AP) — Brett Veach has boyish looks and a down-to-earth demeanor that probably make many people mistake him for a Super Bowl volunteer. But the former small-college wide receiver is in fact the architect of the best Kansas City Chiefs team in 50 years. Their general manager was instrumental in the drafting of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, he overhauled the entire defense in one offseason, and he helped to give coach Andy Reid the pieces to reach the big game in Miami on Sunday.

MIAMI (AP) — Kansas City’s Travis Kelce and San Francisco’s George Kittle are talkative tight ends at this year’s Super Bowl who are among the most entertaining personalities in the NFL. They also could play big roles in who wins the big game Sunday. Kelce comes up with zany dances to celebrate his touchdowns that instantly go viral moments after he gets into the end zone. Kittle uses a celebratory gesture to honor a Mexican wrestler every time he makes a first down. The two say they love football and life in general. And it shows on and off the field.

MIAMI (AP) — It’s no accident that the league’s two fastest offenses are playing for the Super Bowl title as offenses seek more and more to get playmakers the ball in space rather than just up the middle with brute force. The Kansas City Chiefs with speedsters such as Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman were the NFL’s fastest team this season. The San Francisco 49ers were only a tick behind thanks to players such as Raheem Mostert and Matt Breida. The speed will stress the defenses and will play a role in determining who wins the championship.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Running back Tevin Coleman returned to practice Wednesday as the San Francisco 49ers began final preparations for the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs had everyone on the field as they put the finishing touches on their game plan. Coleman dislocated his shoulder in the NFC championship game. Meanwhile, the only injury concerns heading into the week for the Chiefs were defensive tackle Chris Jones, who was hobbled by a calf strain in the AFC title game, and tight end Travis Kelce, who has been dealing with a sore knee. Both looked good during Wednesday’s workout.

MIAMI (AP) — Katie Sowers says being the first woman and openly gay coach to work the Super Bowl feels a bit surreal. She also hopes she’s blazing a path for more to follow. Sowers says she feels like a broken record but will continue saying that the most important thing is that she not be the last woman or openly gay coach at the Super Bowl. Simply attending a Super Bowl was Sowers’ dream growing up in Kansas and playing football in the yard with her twin sister. And yes, becoming an NFL head coach is on the San Francisco assistant’s list.

Former Chiefs/Chargers LB Edwards wins military salute award

Sports

January 29th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

MIAMI (AP) – Former Chargers and Chiefs linebacker Donnie Edwards is the recipient of the NFL’s 2019 Salute to Service Award. The award was created to acknowledge the exceptional efforts by members of the NFL community to honor and support members of the military community. Edwards will be recognized Saturday night at NFL Honors when The Associated Press presents its individual league awards. USAA will contribute $25,000 in Edwards’ honor to the official aid societies representing all five military branches. The NFL will match USAA’s donation of $25,000, which will be donated to the Edwards’ military charity of choice.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Juicy Landrum had 22 points to lead five Baylor players in double figures with a 83-to 62 win over the Iowa State Cyclones. The No. 2 Lady Bears stretched their Big 12 regular-season winning streak to 48 games. Te’a Cooper had 19 points while Lauren Cox and DiDi Richards both had double-doubles for the 18-1 Lady Bears. They also have the nation’s longest home court winning streak at 51 games. Their last home loss was to Texas on Feb. 6, 2017, which was also the last time they lost a conference game during the regular season. Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw had 17 points to lead the Cyclones, who played without starting point guard Rae Johnson.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — No. 18 Iowa faces a pair of tests against ranked Big Ten teams to highlight the AP Top 25 schedule this week. The Hawkeyes visit No. 15 Maryland and host No. 19 Illinois. Those are two of the three games nationally that feature two ranked teams. The other comes in the Southeastern Conference, where No. 13 Kentucky and No. 17 Auburn meet in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Elite Eight game won by the Tigers. Top-ranked Baylor also plays twice this week, visiting Iowa State and hosting TCU.

MIAMI (AP) — If you’re planning to walk through the Kansas City Chiefs locker room between lunch and their typical afternoon practice, you might want to grab someone’s helmet. There’s a good chance a pickup basketball game is going on among 300-pound linemen, right there in the middle of it. The scene that unfolds daily during the regular season perfectly sums up the loosy-goosy nature of the team. It’s an approach that could come in handy during the stressful lead-up to the Super Bowl.

MIAMI (AP) — Jimmy Garoppolo had a front-row seat in the best classroom on the best way to prepare for being a starting quarterback in the Super Bowl. Garoppolo watched Tom Brady prepare for two Super Bowl wins as his backup on New England. Now he gets the chance to translate those lessons into his first trip as a starter for the San Francisco 49ers. Garoppolo said Brady’s calmness throughout the pressure-packed week is one of the things that stands out most.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The NFL’s blue medical tent on each sideline is a place no player ever wants to go, and everyone else would love to sneak inside for a peek. There’s no real mystery. Just imagine a portable exam room using a basic pop-up tent anchored by a metal rectangle frame on the ground around an exam table. Then a player walks in, someone pulls the tent into place and people disappear inside away from prying eyes. Dr. Allen Sills is the NFL’s chief medical officer, and he says the tent is a lot more roomy than people might think.

MIAMI (AP) — The NFL has been dealing with hackers, not someone trying to peak into the league’s records or team playbooks. The hackers apparently attacked social media accounts for the league and the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. The NFL says its cybersecurity department noticed a breach of a league-related social media account, then discovered targeted breaches and additional failed attempts across the league and team accounts. The league told teams to secure their social media accounts to stop further access and alerted the social media platform providers to secure all the accounts.

Turnovers costly for Griswold in loss to Sidney

Sports

January 29th, 2020 by admin

The Griswold Tigers turned the ball over 15 times in just the first half and fell to the Sidney Cowboys 59-26 on Tuesday night. The Tigers hung around early in the game but once Sidney started to implement a full court press the tide shifted toward the Cowboys. Griswold struggled in-bounding the ball against the press and the Cowboys turned a large number of takeaways into easy buckets.

Sidney led 25-10 at halftime and then blew the game open in the third by outscoring the Tigers by 10 in the quarter. The Cowboys were led by 18 points from Noah Jorgensen. The Cowboys are now 8-7 and will host East Mills on Thursday.

Griswold falls to 2-13 on the year and next up will travel to Tri-Center on Thursday.

Ward leads Sidney past Griswold in girls hoops

Sports

January 29th, 2020 by admin

Chay Ward poured in 23 points to lead the Sidney Cowgirls to a 49-14 win over the Griswold Tigers on Tuesday night. It was a slow start to the game for both teams. The Cowgirls used an early run to grab a 13 point lead by the end of the first quarter and the half was just a 25-8 lead for Sidney.

The Cowgirls slowly pulled away the rest of the game to move to 8-7 on the season. They head back home to host East Mills on Thursday.

The Tigers fall to 2-13 on the season and will now travel to Tri-Center on Thursday.
