Former Iowa Offensive Lineman Now a Husker

Sports

June 25th, 2020 by Jim Field

Former four-star offensive lineman Ezra Miller on Wednesday announced he will be transferring from Iowa to Nebraska.

The former Ridge View High School star from Holstein decided to leave the Iowa program in January.  At the time, the 6-foot-6, 310 pound Miller said his decision was because of a back injury that he claimed would force him to retire from football.  In May, Miller announced that he was suffering from depression.

Miller will walk-on to the Nebraska program.  He will need to sit out the 2020 season unless he can get a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible immediately.

June 25th, 2020 by Jim Field

Ben McGilmer of the University of Iowa Men’s Basketball “Six Pack” has passed away at the age of 74. McGilmer and his teammates won the 1970 Big Ten Championship, winning all 14 Big Ten games.

McGilmer’s academic and athletic career came to an abrupt halt when, after his sophomore year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. During his military service, he played on the undefeated All Army Basketball team.

After completing his tour with the U. S. Army, McGilmer returned to Iowa City, playing on one of the greatest teams in Iowa basketball history. As a senior, McGilmer averaged 10.3 points per contest on Coach Ralph Miller’s 1970 squad that won 17 of its last 18 games and going undefeated in conference play. That magical team remains the highest scoring team in Big Ten history, averaging a staggering 102.9 points per game in league play. The Hawkeyes topped the century mark 14 times and averaged 98.7 points per game over the course of 25 games.

In addition to averaging 10.3 points per game as a senior, he averaged 13.5 points in 1969 and 10.8 points as a sophomore in 1966.

DENVER (AP) — All-Star outfielder Charlie Blackmon of the Colorado Rockies has become the first Major League Baseball player known to have tested positive for the coronavirus. A person familiar with Blackmon’s situation confirms the test result to The Associated Press. The Denver Post first reported Blackmon’s condition on Tuesday. Blackmon is a four-time All-Star. He turns 34 on July 1, the day players are set to begin reporting for the resumption of spring training.

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto says a few players have tested positive for COVID-19. UNDATED (AP) — Suspended West Virginia defensive coordinator Vic Koenning has apologized after a player alleged he made a series of insensitive remarks. Koenning was placed on administrative leave Tuesday after safety Kerry Martin posted the allegations on his Twitter account. On Wednesday, Koenning said he never intended his words or actions to be insensitive. Martin said the latest incident happened Monday, when Koenning shared a conversation he had with his son about protests over racial injustice. Martin, who is Black, also said Koenning has talked about politics, including that President Donald Trump should build a border wall to keep Hispanics out of the country.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State athletics has added a diversity council. The move comes soon after football coach Mike Gundy’s decision to wear a T-shirt promoting a right-wing news network upset All-America running back Chuba Hubbard and several teammates. Hubbard, who is Black, chose to remain after Gundy apologized.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have signed all five of their picks from baseball’s condensed draft after completing deals with their third- and fifth-round selections. The teams announced that it had finalized contracts with right-hander Tekoah Roby and shortstop Thomas Saggese two weeks after the draft. The Rangers signed their other three draft picks last week. Roby was picked 86th overall after he was a prep star at Pine Forest High in Pensacola, Florida. Saggese was chosen in the fifth round from Carlsbad High School in California.

June 24th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — A limited number of remaining tickets for next month’s INDYCAR Series doubleheader at the Iowa Speedway will go on sale Friday. The Speedway says each group of fans will be separated by at least 6 feet in accordance with Iowa state COVID-19 guidelines. Previously purchased tickets for July 17 and 18 will be honored, including season tickets. The Indycars will hold two races along with an ARCA Menard Series race. Mark Miles is President of Penske Entertainment, which operates the INDYCAR SERIES.

Miles says putting on these races is a lot of work, even without all the extra health precautions.

The Iowa Speedway says ticketholders will be notified about their specific seat locations in the coming days, and tickets will either be emailed or printed and distributed beginning July 1st.
