MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have had “a few” players in their organization test positive for COVID-19 recently. President of baseball operations Derek Falvey said Thursday that each player was “doing well” in self-isolation at home. Falvey declined to specify the exact number or whether the players were major leaguers or minor leaguers. Major league camps are set to reopen next week, mostly at home stadiums.

NEW YORK (AP) — It has back-up plans, but the NFL still plans to hold training camps on time beginning in late July. The announcement came on the same day the league canceled the Hall of Fame game that kicks off the preseason. The Aug. 6 exhibition game in Canton, Ohio, between the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers will be played on Aug. 5, 2021, with the same teams. Enshrinements for 20 men scheduled for this year now will occur on Aug. 7, 2021, with the 2021 inductees going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame the next day.

CHARLOTTE (AP) — Panthers coach Matt Rhule says he’s considering kneeling alongside his players during the national anthem this season in support of the movement against racial injustice. The first-year coach from Baylor has told players he will support them if they express their views. Rhule says he will confer with his players before making any decision on whether to kneel during the anthem. Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien has said he plans to kneel with his players.

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — After waiting for 30 years for Liverpool to be the champion of England, soccer fans couldn’t help but put aside some pandemic precautions. They showed up in the thousands to watch fireworks that started to explode at twilight. Liverpool’s squad realized they had won it all while watching television. It happened when second-place Manchester City lost 2-1 at Chelsea and left Liverpool 23 points in front. With seven games to go, Liverpool cannot be caught.

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Mackenzie Hughes shot a career-low 60 and led by three shots after the first round of the Travelers Championship. The 29-year-old Canadian flirted with 59 on Thursday as the PGA Tour tried to switch its focus back to golf amid growing concerns about the coronavirus. TPC River Highlands, near Hartford, Connecticut, is no stranger to low scores. Hughes was bogey-free and made a 30-foot putt on his second-to-last hole to get to 10 under. But he left a 40-foot birdie try short to settle for 60. It was good enough for a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland.

Governor extends COVID proclamation, makes it clear fall high school sports can resume

News, Sports

(Radio Iowa) — Governor Reynolds has extended her public health emergency proclamation for another 30 days. It was set to expire at midnight tonight (Thursday) and Reynolds says by extending it, many of the regulatory relief measures she’s authorized during the pandemic will remain in place. “The proclamation also clarifies that all team athletic activities may now resume,” she says, “according to guidance being provided by the Department of Education, the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.”

This means Iowa schools can prepare for the resumption of fall sports like football, volleyball and cross country. Iowa is the only state in the country with high school summer sports of softball and baseball underway. COLLEGE athletes have returned to voluntary workouts and public health officials in Ames and Iowa City have expressed concerns about rising COVID-19 cases in Story and Johnston Counties. Ticket sales have been halted at both Iowa and Iowa State, to reduce seating capacity at 50 percent, which was required by the emergency proclamation the governor issued in late May.continue.

Reynolds says she’ll support whatever decision is made about having fans in the stands — and she’d like to go to a game herself.  “If I can work it into my schedule, I think I would love to have the opportunity to go to an Iowa State or Iowa or UNI game,” she said, “or any of the other colleges.”  The governor says it’ll be up to fans to be responsible for their own health. “That’s how we continue to move forward and honestly, hopefully we’ll continue to see the downward trends that we’re seeing,” Reynolds says. “…There’s a long time between now and then and we’ll see what the numbers are and if we have to adjust accordingly, we can.”

Statewide trends show the number of Iowans hospitalized for treatment of COVID-19 continues to decline. At 10 o’clock this (Thursday) morning, Iowa hospitals were treating 137 coronavirus patients — down from a high of more than 400 in mid-May.

COVID-19 cases led to suspension of games at Iowa ballpark

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Two high school baseball games scheduled for Thursday at Principal Park in Des Moines will not be played after officials said a ballpark staff member tested positive for coronavirus. Officials with the park, which is home to the Triple-A minor league Iowa Cubs, say all staff at the ballpark will now undergo testing for COVID-19. Ankeny Christian and Orient Macksburg, as well as Indianola and Gilbert, had been scheduled to play at the park.

When it resumed high school baseball games earlier this month, Iowa became the first state in the nation to bring back high school athletics in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

12 UI athletes have COVID-19, UI Health Care financials ‘trashed’ by the virus

News, Sports

June 25th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The University of Iowa Athletics Department reports a dozen coronavirus cases, as student athletes return to campus. Contact tracers have been tracking down who else may have been exposed and directing them to self-isolate, too. At an event Wednesday hosted by the Corridor Business Journal, U-I President Bruce Harreld said even one positive player can sideline many more.  “One positive test turns into eight, to ten, or sometimes even more, in isolation,” Harreld says. “So the math of this is getting very interesting and it’s getting difficult.”

The university says it’s working with local public health officials to provide testing and contact tracing as thousands of students return to campus in August. Cases in Johnson County are rising. The pandemic and ensuing economic crisis took a significant financial toll on U-I Hospitals and Clinics. According to an estimate earlier this month, U-I Health Care lost more than a 100-million dollars since March. Harreld says halting elective surgeries was a major blow.  He says, “The bad news is when we went from 800 patients in the hospital to 500 patients in the hospital on a daily basis, we basically, probably not a very good term, but it’s true, we trashed our financials.”

While the hospital has resumed elective surgeries, Harreld says operations are still not back up to full capacity.
