KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The way Indianapolis handled the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night sent a jolt through the NFL, whether it was dominating the line of scrimmage or shutting down Patrick Mahomes and Co. on defense.

The one place the shock didn’t reverberate? The visiting locker room in Arrowhead Stadium.

“The one emotion we were not feeling is shock. I can’t even explain it,” Colts coach Frank Reich said after the 19-13 victory. “The way guys were walking down the hallway, it was ‘We’re not going to be denied. We have to get on track. We’ve got to do it.’ I just knew it was real. I felt it all week.

“There was just an air of confidence and belief that we would do what we did today.”

Marlon Mack ran for 132 yards , and ageless kicker Adam Vinatieri knocked through four field goals, as the Colts atoned ever-so-slightly for a January playoff defeat inside the same stadium.

Asked what the message was pregame, longtime Chiefs linebacker-turned-Colts defensive end Justin Houston replied: “To come out here and play our game. To leave it out there every snap, to play with your heart, play with your soul. And I think we did that tonight.”

The Colts (3-2) allowed points on the Chiefs’ first two possessions before shutting them out until Harrison Butker’s field goal with 1:16 to go. Indianapolis recovered the onside kick without any issue and ran out the clock to celebrate a big win heading into its bye.

Mahomes threw for 321 yards and a touchdown, and the Chiefs (4-1) had just 36 yards rushing despite getting top running back Damien Williams back from an injury, all while watching their record streak of 22 straight games scoring at least 26 points come to a crashing conclusion.

“Penalties are really what hurt us today,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, whose team was flagged 11 times for 125 yards. “You get things going, all of a sudden you’re going backward, and it’s tough in this league to do that against a good team and win.”

In an air-it-out era of the NFL, the Colts also won by dominating the line of scrimmage.

On offense, their big line bruised a Kansas City defensive front that lost Chris Jones and Xavier Williams to injuries. That created big holes for Mack and plenty of time for Jacoby Brissett, who threw for 151 yards while running for the Colts’ only touchdown.

On defense, the Colts spent most of the night in the Kansas City backfield, plugging up holes in the running game and relentlessly pressuring the reigning league MVP on passing downs.

Mahomes was sacked four times and hit plenty more. At one point in the second half, Cam Erving was pushed so far into Mahomes’ face that the backup left tackle stepped on his quarterback’s ankle, leaving Mahomes to hobble to the sideline when Kansas City was forced to punt.

“In this league, the margin of error is tiny,” said Mahomes, who dismissed the seriousness of his injury. “If you’re not executing at a high level you’re going to lose.'”

The Colts and Chiefs mostly played to a first-half stalemate, but the second of Vinatieri’s four field goals made it 13-10 at the break. The real winners were the officials, who finally got to rest the arms that they used to throw flags for the first 30 minutes.

The Chiefs’ prolific offense continued to sputter in the second half, and Brissett and the Colts essentially played a game of keep-away throughout the third quarter and into the fourth.

“You don’t need a large playbook to convert third-and-1,” Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark said.

The Colts used 8:34 off the clock to move a mere 35 yards and set up Vinatieri’s next field goal. Then, when the Chiefs failed to convert fourth-and-1 at their own 34, Indianapolis got another field goal from Vinatieri with 2:30 to go to make it a two-possession game.

“You could just tell they were hungry. They were hungry all week,” Reich said. “I know that’s not uncommon, but there was something different about this week. I could feel it. It was palpable. We just walked in here with a lot of confidence. Last night in our meetings, I can’t even explain what happened in our meetings last night. There was just a feeling amongst the team when we walked into this stadium.”

Mahomes nearly threw his first interception of the season in the third quarter, when FB Anthony Sherman batted a pass and LB Bobby Okereke caught it. A review showed the ball bounced off the ground.

RING OF HONOR

The Chiefs inducted OL Brian Waters into their Hall of Fame during halftime. Waters was a two-time All-Pro for Kansas City before wrapping his 13-year career with the Patriots and Cowboys.

HAPPY RETURNS

Colts DE Justin Houston celebrated his first trip to Kansas City as a visitor by sacking Mahomes in the first half. The four-time Pro Bowl pick had 78 1/2 sacks during eight seasons with the Chiefs.

FLAG DAY

Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland had a night to forget. Not only did he struggle in pass coverage, he was flagged four times for 68 yards. That included a 53-yard pass interference call.

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL is down to two unbeaten teams. Kansas City failed to do much on either side of the ball in a 19-13 home loss to Indianapolis. That left New England and San Francisco as the league’s only teams without a setback. The 49ers host Cleveland on Monday night. The Chiefs had scored at least 26 points in 27 consecutive regular-season games. The streak ended with a lackluster effort against the Colts.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Dansby Swanson hit a tying double with two outs in the ninth inning and Adam Duvall delivered a two-run single as the Atlanta Braves rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the NL Division Series. Game 4 is today (Monday) at Busch Stadium. Atlanta needs one more win to advance to the NL Championship Series for the first time since 2001. St. Louis wasted a terrific performance by Adam Wainwright, who pitched 7 2/3 innings of four-hit ball in his first postseason start since 2014.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Les Miles fired offensive coordinator Les Koenning halfway through their first season with the Jayhawks and promoted Brent Dearmon to the same position Sunday. Koenning was hired by Miles after spending last season as the running backs coach at Southern Miss. He also has been offensive coordinator at Duke, Alabama, Texas A&M, South Alabama and Mississippi State. Dearmon spent last season as head coach of Bethel, an NAIA school.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Zdenek Ondrasek scored twice and FC Dallas earned a playoff spot with a 6-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City in the regular-season finale. FC Dallas (13-12-9) will open the playoffs at Seattle. Sporting Kansas City finished 10-16-8.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Zach Charbonnet ran for a 2-yard touchdown to give No. 19 Michigan an early double-digit lead and its defense did the rest against No. 14 Iowa, forcing four turnovers and tallying eight sacks in a 10-3 win Saturday. The Wolverines scored just three points off the Hawkeyes’ turnovers. Iowa failed to take advantage of favorable field position on its final two drives with a chance to extend the game or possibly win it with a touchdown and 2-point conversion.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Brock Purdy threw for 247 yards and a pair of TDs and Iowa State overwhelmed TCU 49-24 for its first Big 12 win of the season. Purdy also ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (3-2, 1-1 Big 12), who beat the Horned Frogs for just the third time in 11 tries.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lane McCallum kicked a 24-yard field goal as time ran out to give Nebraska a 13-10 win in yet another close game against Northwestern. The Cornhuskers won in a slog after Lamar Jackson intercepted Aidan Smith to set up the winning drive. The Huskers are 5-4 against Northwestern since joining the Big Ten in 2011. A total of 24 points separates the teams over the nine games. The previous two games went to overtime, and seven of the nine meetings have been decided by one score.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalen Hurts threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 56 yards and two more TDs in leading No. 6 Oklahoma to a 45-20 rout of Kansas. Rhamondre Stevenson added 109 yards rushing and a score on just five carries for the Sooners, who spotted Kansas a touchdown lead before ripping off seven straight scores. Up next for Oklahoma is the Red River Showdown with No. 11 Texas.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Charlie Brewer threw for 230 yards and a touchdown and Baylor beat Kansas State 31-12 to remain undefeated. The Bears had 426 yards of offense with only 23 minutes of possession against the Wildcats, who have scored only two touchdowns in their last two games.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Kelly Bryant’s last throw of the game was a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Knox late in the first half of Missouri’s 42-10 victory over Troy. The Tigers hope it isn’t the last pass of Bryant’s college career. After he released the throw, Bryant was hit low from behind by Troy defensive tackle Travis Sailo and immediately clutched his left knee.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Sammy Blais had a goal and an assist and his score midway through the third period was the winner as the St. Louis Blues beat the Dallas Stars 3-2. Jordan Binnington stopped 28 shots as the defending Stanley Cup champions won their first game of the season. The Stars have lost their first two games.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Redshirt freshman Will McElvain threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Weston, and Trevor Allen and Tyler Hoosman ran for scores, as Northern Iowa held off Youngstown State 21-14 in a Missouri Valley Football Conference opener between two ranked teams on Saturday. McElvain staked the Panthers (3-2), ranked 13th in the FCS Coaches poll, to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when he capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with his TD toss to Weston. McElvain directed an eight-play, 79-yard drive — ended by Allen’s 10-yard TD run — to push Northern Iowa’s lead to 14-0 with 5:07 left in the second quarter.

On the ensuing possession for the 17th-ranked Penguins (4-1), Nathan Mays needed just one play — a 75-yard scoring strike to Jermiah Braswell — to halve the lead at 14-7. But the Panthers took the kickoff and marched 75 yards, with Hoosman running it in from the 15-yard line for a 21-7 halftime lead. The only scoring in the second half came on Youngstown State’s opening drive of the third quarter. Mays completed all four of his passes in an eight-play, 75-yard drive, accounting for 56 yards with the last 14 coming on a scoring toss to Kendric Mallory that pulled the Penguins within 21-14.

McElvain finished 10-of-20 passing for 235 yards and a TD for the winners. Allen had a game-high 74 yards rushing on 16 carries. Weston had three receptions for 108 yards. Mays completed 17 of 23 passes for 239 yards and two scores for Youngstown State. The Penguins were held to 55 yards on the ground on 36 carries.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ian Corwin threw two touchdowns passes and Drake held Valparaiso to just 131 yards of offense in a 35-6 victory on Saturday. After a scoreless first quarter, Corwin directed a 15-play, 64-yard drive that took 6:20 off the clock with Drew Lauer running it in from the 2-yard line for a 7-0 lead at the 13:34 mark of the second period. On the next possession for Drake (2-3, 2-0 Pioneer Football League), Corwin connected with Caden Meis for an 11-yard TD and a 14-0 lead. Meis, a freshman, finished with a career-best 12 rushes for 90 yards and a score. His TD catch was his first career reception.

Dimitrios Latsonas got the Crusaders (0-5, 0-1) on the scoreboard with a 46-yard field goal to cut their deficit to 14-3. Lauer followed with his second TD run, a 15-yarder that capped a six-play, 47-yard drive for a 21-3 Bulldogs’ lead. Latsonas kicked a 41-yard field goal on the final play of the quarter to leave Valparaiso trailing 21-6 at halftime.

Drake put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Meis raced for a 53-yard TD on the Bulldogs’ second play of the quarter and Corwin capped the scoring with a 4-yard TD toss to Devin Cates at the 8:10 mark.
Corwin completed 13 of 20 passes for 154 yards for Drake. Lauer rushed for 77 yards and two scores on 17 carries.

Jimmy Seewald hit just 10 of 24 passes for 66 yards and two interceptions. Elias Earley had 10 carries for 52 of the Crusaders’ 65 yards on the ground.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s offensive strategy this season has been to let quarterback Brock Purdy try to make as many plays as possible. Purdy showed yet again on Saturday how effective such an approach can be, running and throwing his way past an overwhelmed TCU defense.

THE TAKEAWAY
Iowa State: This was the breakout game the Cyclones were searching for. Iowa State’s offensive line played its best game in recent memory and its defense largely took away Anderson, forcing the Horned Frogs to become one dimensional. “I thought we played in a really good rhythm,” Campbell said. “We were aggressive on both sides of the game early. When things got a little awkward there late in the game and we needed to make a play, we made a play.”
TCU: After a rough start, Duggan settled in and brought the Horned Frogs back into the game — albeit briefly — in his return to his home state. The upcoming bye week should only help Duggan’s progress moving forward.
LANG’S TIME
While Purdy continues to be Iowa State’s best threat running the ball, Johnnie Lang might be inching closer to becoming the Cyclones’ starting running back. Lang had 72 yards on a team-high 16 carries. “I really thought Johnnie Lang played a great game, his best game to date. That’s really exciting. He’s practicing great and he showed it on the football field,” Campbell said.
