Emerald Coast Classic cancelled for 2020

Sports

October 5th, 2020 by admin

NICEVILLE, FLA.  —  Citing numerous factors, tournament director Maury Hanks has announced the Emerald Coast Classic basketball tournament has been canceled this year.

The Emerald Coast Classic was scheduled for Nov. 27 and 29 with Florida facing Illinois and Iowa State playing Oregon in opening night match ups.

“The landscape in college basketball has changed dramatically this season when you factor in the coronavirus pandemic coupled with the new scheduling policies implemented by the NCAA,” said Hanks. “Teams were also concerned about traveling long distances with the threat of COVID-19.”

“We are disappointed because we had an incredible lineup but we understand the concerns the teams have. All of the teams have expressed a desire to participate in the tournament in the near future.”

“Our program was looking forward to playing in the Emerald Coast Classic as part of a real tough field,” said Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm, whose team captured the 2015 Emerald Coast Classic championship. “Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control that won’t be able to happen this season. We look forward to returning to the event in the future.”

Other participating coaches echoed Prohm’s comments.

“We are disappointed that we are unable to compete in the 2020 Emerald Coast Classic,” said Oregon head coach Dana Altman. “We have always been impressed by events hosted by Global Sports and were looking forward to a competitive field once again.”

“We were looking forward to playing in the Emerald Coast Classic,” added Illinois head coach Brad Underwood. “It’s a great tournament. We hope to return in the near future.”

The Emerald Coast Classic will resume play Nov. 26-27, 2021 with CBS Sports Network televising exclusive coverage of the tournament.

Breece Hall

IRVING, Texas- Iowa State sophomore running back Breece Hall was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, announced today by the Big 12 Conference.

A native of Wichita, Kan., Hall was instrumental in guiding the Cyclones to a 37-30 victory over No. 18 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Hall rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns, posting 100 yards after intermission in the come-from-behind win. Hall had a two-yard touchdown rush in the first half and his eight-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter was the winning score.

His long run of 36 yards set up the final score.

Hall is the Big 12 leader in rushing yards per game (132.0) and rushing touchdowns (6), ranking third nationally in both categories. He is the only “power 5” back with three 100-yard rushing efforts and is the first Cyclone to go over the 100-yard rushing plateau in the first three games of the season since Ennis Haywood in 2000.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that both the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs have returned all negative results, allowing their game rescheduled for Monday night to be played. Also, the AP is told the Tennessee Titans have their first day clear of positive results in a week. The NFL postponed the Patriots’ game at Kansas City from Sunday after New England  quarterback Cam Newton and Chiefs practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta’amu were both added to the COVID-19 reserve list Saturday. Washington canceled a multiplayer workout Monday due to virus concerns.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma dropped out of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time since September 2016 and Iowa State jumped back into the Top 25 after a day of upsets. There largely was stability at the top of the rankings after No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 Florida all won big, though the Bulldogs and Gators switched spots. Clemson received 52 first-place votes and Alabama got eight from the panel of sports writers and broadcasters. But overall, five teams dropped out of the rankings after eight ranked teams lost Saturday, six to unranked opponents. The Sooners were involved in one of those upsets, losing at Iowa State. Oklahoma’s first two-game losing streak in 21 years snapped its string of 64 straight poll appearances. UCF also fell out.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says another Tennessee Titans player, fullback Khari Blasingame, and another staff member have tested positive for the coronavirus, while the rest of the NFL returned no new positives. The Titans’ outbreak is now up to 20 cases, with 18 positives since Tuesday. New England Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton and Kansas City Chiefs practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta’amu were both added to the NFL’s COVID-19 reserve list Saturday, forcing the league to postpone the Patriots’ game at Kansas City until Monday night. The negative test results include Saints fullback Michael Burton, who falsely tested positive on Saturday.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Jimmy Butler recorded a triple-double of 40 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds while playing 45 minutes of the Miami Heat’s 115-104 triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers. Butler was 14 for 20 from the field in the third 40-point triple-double in finals history. He allowed Miami to pull within two games to one in the series.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Russell Wilson was 24 of 34 for 360 yards and two touchdowns as the Seattle Seahawks held off the Dolphins, 31-23 in Miami. After setting an NFL record for TD passes through the first three games of a season, Wilson now has 16 scoring throws to tie Peyton Manning’s four-game mark. Leading 17-15, Wilson tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to David Moore to stretch the Seahawks’ lead to 24-15 with 5:24 left.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady passed for 369 yards and hit five different receivers for TD as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rallied for their third straight win, 38-31 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Mike Evans, Scotty Miller, O.J. Howard, Cameron Brate and rookie Ke’Shawn Vaughn caught scoring passes from Brady, who threw four of his five TDs after falling behind 24-7 in the second quarter. Rookie Justin Herbert completed 20 of 25 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns in the Chargers’ third loss in a row.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Baker Mayfield threw for two touchdowns and the Cleveland Browns held on for a 49-38 victory over the Cowboys to improve to 3-1 for the first time since 2001. Jarvis Landry had his first career touchdown pass in the receiver’s 100th career game, a 37-yard toss to Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham finished with his first three-score game in nearly five years, capped by a 50-yard run on a reverse after the Cowboys had cut a 41-14 deficit to three points with less than four minutes remaining.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Josh Allen threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another in leading the 4-0 Buffalo Bills to a 30-23 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Allen was brilliant in the first half, finishing 15 of 20 with two touchdowns before sustaining a shoulder injury late in the second quarter. Derek Carr had a strong performance for the Raiders, going 32 for 44 for 311 yards and two touchdowns.

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Doug Kalitta won the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Midwest Nationals on Sunday at World Wide Technology Raceway to move within two points of Top Fuel leader Steve Torrence. Kalitta won for the fourth time at the St. Louis-area track, beating Torrence in the final round with a 3.690-second run at 322.58 mph. Kalita has two wins this year and 49 overall. Tommy Johnson won in Funny Car for Don Schumacher Racing’s 11th straight class victory. He edged Matt Hagan with a 3.884 at 326.88 in a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat for his second win of the year and 21st overall. The Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle racers were unable to finish Sunday because of cold temperatures and wind direction.

Patriots-Chiefs moved to Monday night

Sports

October 4th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL will have a rare Monday night double-header after moving this weekend’s marquee match-up back a day over coronavirus concerns. New England and Kansas City were scheduled to square off today (Sunday). But the game was postponed after Patriots quarterback Cam Newton and Chiefs practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta’amu were added to the COVID-19 reserve list this weekend.

Further testing showed none of their teammates were infected with the virus, so the game has been rescheduled for tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. CDT on CBS. The original Monday night game pitting Atlanta and Green Bay is being bumped back 45 minutes and will now kick off at 7:50 p.m. on ESPN.
