Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Breece Hall matched a career high with 185 yards rushing and two touchdowns, Brock Purdy threw two TD passes and had another score on the ground and No. 23 Iowa State coasted to a 52-22 victory over winless Kansas. Purdy finished with 239 yards passing and Kene Nwangwu also hit the end zone for the 4-2 Cyclones, who bounced back from a tough loss to No. 6 Oklahoma State by beating the Jayhawks for the sixth straight time. The only bright spot for 0-6 Kansas came on a 100-yard kickoff return by Kenny Logan in the second half.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jesse Brown scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 2-yard run in the third quarter, and Northwestern erased an early 17-point deficit to beat Iowa 21-20. The Wildcats outscored the Hawkeyes 21-3 after the first quarter, eating up clock and keeping the Hawkeye offense out of rhythm. Peyton Ramsey threw for 130 yards on 11-of-18 passing and ran for another 26 yards, and Isaiah Bowser had 25 carries for 85 yards for the Wildcats. Spencer Petras threw all three of his interceptions in the second half, the last one on a tipped ball that linebacker Blake Gallagher picked off, allowing Northwestern to go into victory formation.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Top-ranked Clemson rallied from 18 points down to beat Boston College, 34-28. Freshman DJ Uiagalelei threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns in place of Heisman Trophy candidate Trevor Lawrence, who sat out after testing positive for COVID-19. Uiagalelei’s performance proved even more important after head coach Dabo Swinney announced that Lawrence will also miss next Saturday’s clash with fourth-ranked Notre Dame.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Mac Jones threw four touchdown passes to DeVonta Smith, who had 203 receiving yards in second-ranked Alabama’s 41-0 pounding of Mississippi St. Najee Harris gained 119 yards on 21 carries for the Crimson Tide, who handed Mike Leach his first shutout loss as a head coach. Najee Harris gained 119 yards on 21 carries for the Tide.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Third-ranked Ohio State generated 526 yards of offense in its 15th straight Big Ten win and 10th straight on the road against a ranked opponent, 38-25 at No. 18 Penn State. Justin Fields passed for 318 yards and the Buckeyes had two scoring receptions each from both Chris Olave (oh-LAH’-vay) and Jeremy Ruckert. Garrett Wilson took an opening sweep 62 yards to set up Master Teague III’s short touchdown run two plays later.

UNDATED (AP) — Fourth-ranked Notre Dame and No. 5 Georgia were winners on Saturday. Kyren Williams ran for two touchdowns and the Irish tuned up for next weekend’s big game against Clemson by thumping Georgia Tech, 31-13. Zamir White rushed for a career-high 131 yards and a touchdown in the Bulldogs’ 11th straight win over Kentucky, 14-3.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Sam Ehlinger threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Moore in overtime before Joseph Ossai’s sack of Spencer Sanders clinched a 41-34 victory for Texas against No. 6 Oklahoma State. The Cowboys outgained the Longhorns, 530 yards to 287, but OSU turned the ball over four times. Sanders passed for career highs of 400 yards and four touchdowns, but his three turnovers led to 17 points for the Longhorns.

Iowa DNR launches free online video series for hunters

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

October 31st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is offering a new online resource for beginning and experienced hunters. The series of “Let’s Go Hunting” videos is a clearinghouse of information for hunters, thanks to a partnership with Iowa Safari Club International and several other organizations. D-N-R hunter education coordinator Megan Wisecup says you can access the videos for free. “It’s definitely perfect timing with the way things are going right now this year,” Wisecup says. “We are excited to get this resource launched and out into folks’ hands.”

The series will feature 23 different videos on several hunting aspects such as location, how to call animals, types of weaponry and more. “The overall goal of our project is to create some resources out there that folks can navigate on their own time and from the comfort of their own home,” Wisecup says. “It’s really that next step after you get done with hunter education.” The videos can be a welcome plus for new hunters as well as seasoned veterans. “I think it will be a great addition and also a great refresher,” she says. “Even a lot of our own staff and officers enjoy having this as a refresher before going into the season.”

To check out the video series and find other resources to expand your hunting knowledge or even your first hunting experience, visit: www.iowadnr.gov/learntohunt.

National Sports Headlines: 10/31/20

Sports

October 31st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid knows one of the intriguing subplots Sunday when Kansas City takes on the New York Jets will be running back Le’Veon Bell’s first shot at his former team. The two-time All-Pro joined the Chiefs after a rather acrimonious split with the Jets a couple weeks ago. Bell had a get-your-feet wet game against the Denver Broncos last weekend. He could have a much bigger role when the Super Bowl champs face the winless Jets at Arrowhead Stadium.

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL says the Chargers and Broncos game Sunday is not in jeopardy after players from both teams tested positive for COVID-19. The Chargers are likely to be down to their third string players at right guard and right tackle because of injuries and because two linemen were placed on the COVID-19/reserve list. They scrapped practice after right guard Graham Glasgow tested positive. The Broncos were already in the league’s intensive coronavirus protocols, which began when running backs coach Curtis Modkins contracted the virus two weeks ago. Modkins returned to work Monday.

Elsewhere:

The Packers will face the Vikings on Sunday without leading rusher Aaron Jones, who will miss a second straight game with a calf injury. That leaves Jamaal Williams and A.J. Dillon as Green Bay’s top two running backs versus Minnesota.

The NFL is “strongly encouraging” that players on the sidelines who are not participating in a game or about to go on the field wear protective masks. In a memo obtained by The Associated Press on Friday, the league’s management council also suggested the 32 teams enhance physical distancing on the sidelines while the NFL considers expanding the bench area. The league also is offering an additional testing option for bus drivers retained by teams in the away city, prior to the team’s arrival.

UNDATED (AP) — College football’s bowl schedule is finally set and will begin Dec. 19, the day most of the major college football conferences are set to play their championship games. The 37-game bowl schedule will now include several mainstays like the Holiday Bowl in San Diego and the Hawaii Bowl because of issues related to the pandemic. But there will still be opportunities for 72 teams to go bowling in the 36 games that lead up to the College Football Playoff national championship on Jan. 11 in Miami Gardens, Florida.
