Leader of horse group concerned about proposed federal change

News, Sports

January 25th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The leader of one of the groups which supports and runs horse racing in Iowa tells state regulators there is a new federal plan in the works that could be “devastating” to the industry. Jon Moss, the executive director of the Iowa Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, says a new regulation act got tacked onto the massive federal relief package. “This act is probably one of the biggest changes in the horse racing industry since the Interstate Horse Racing Act of 1978,” Moss says.

He says the 1978 act set up a framework for horse racing and allowed each state to implement its plan within that framework. But Moss says the new act takes away the state power. “They have now effectively said that all the rights the states have been abdicated and you must turn over anything in relation to a new organization that will be formed that will dictate not only medication measures — but also safety issues,” Moss says.

Moss told the state Racing and Gaming Commission at their monthly meeting that the state control is just one of the issues of concern and the potential cost is another. “Because of the fact that this new group that is being formed is unchecked in how much they can charge us as the state of Iowa in order to actually regulate the racing industry within the state,” Moss says. “This new group takes your power, gets to dictate how much money they think it takes to do that, and then charge us to do that. And they are going to charge not only Prairie Meadows and the state — they are going to do whatever they want.”

Moss says Iowa Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley were against the measure — but had to vote for the bill to get the needed pandemic relief. He says “There’s going to be a reckoning coming — we’re going to be in a tough position. We may reach out and request something of your assistance to try and help stop this from being implemented,” Moss says.

Racing and Gaming Commission members say they are aware of the situation, and Moss says he has talked with the Racing and Gaming Administrator about the issue.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns with most of it going to favorite targets Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill as the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs rolled to a 38-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game.

The Chiefs advanced to face a familiar foe in Tom Brady and the NFC champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl in two weeks in Tampa, Florida. Buffalo’s Josh Allen finished with 287 yards passing and two touchdowns with an interception.

Chiefs have Edwards-Helaire, no Bell, Watkins vs Bills

Sports

January 24th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have Clyde Edwards-Helaire but are missing fellow running back Le’Veon Bell and veteran wide receiver Sammy Watkins for their AFC championship game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Edwards-Helaire has been out since mid-December, when the 32nd overall draft pick sustained a high-ankle sprain in a game in New Orleans. Edwards-Helaire returned to practice for a single day before he was inactive in last week’s divisional-round win over the Browns, but he looked good this week in practice and was active for the Bills.

The Bills have defensive tackle Vernon Butler and wide receiver Gabriel Davis available against Kansas City. Butler had been questionable with a quadriceps injury and Davis had been questionable with an ankle injury.

Sports

January 23rd, 2021 by admin

The Atlantic boys basketball team came up with some clutch plays down the stretch to pick up a conference win over Creston 55-49 on Saturday afternoon. Skyler Handlos blocked a shot and pushed it ahead to Grant Sturm who buried a three from the far corner to put the Trojans up by one 50-49 with 1:15 left. Craig Alan Becker followed with a three on the right wing the next possession to give Atlantic control. Dayton Templeton had a big defensive block the next trip up for the Panthers as the momentum rolled in favor of the Trojans.

Ethan Williams had a monster game in the post with 19 points. He really set the tone for the Trojans in the second half with the first three buckets of the half. He had 14 of his 19 points after the break. Skyler Handlos also finished in double figures with 17. The Trojans go over .500 at 6-5 and will now prep for a home game against Shenandoah on Tuesday.

Creston had three players in double figures led by 15 from Colby Burg. Kaden Briggs added 14 and Kyle Strider finished with 11. The Panthers fall to 7-5 and they will get ready to host Glenwood on Tuesday.
