No. 7 Maryland dominates Iowa to repeat as tourney champ

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Seventh-ranked Maryland’s scoring depth and impressive skill were once again on display in a 104-84 rout of Iowa to claim a second consecutive Big Ten Tournament championship on Saturday. Seven of eight players who scored early had more than one basket. Coach Brenda Frese’s Terrapins (24-2) have reached this title game in each of the seven seasons since Maryland joined the conference, and won six of seven regular-season titles.

Chloe Bibby led the Terps with 21 points, including 11, with three 3-pointers, in the opening quarter.

 

Randall’s late TD run pushes San Diego past Drake 13-10

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Mason Randall scored on a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 3:34 remaining and San Diego beat Drake 13-10 in the season opener for both teams. Randall’s score capped an 11-play, 75 yard drive for the Toreros. Randall was 19-of-25 passing for 234 yards and had two interceptions. Michael Carner and Derek Kline combined for 12 catches for 188 yards receiving. Brandon Eickert kicked field goals of 25 and 36 yards.

Drake was held to 25 yards of total offense and was 2 of 11 on third-down conversions. Ian Corwin scored on a 5-yard run and Nathan De Bruin kicked two field goals for Drake.

 

No. 3 Illinois gets past No. 5 Iowa, into Big Ten title game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kofi Cockburn scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half, and No. 3 Illinois beat No. 5 Iowa 82-71 to advance to the Big Ten Tournament title game. The Fighting Illini have won six straight, with three coming against top-10 foes. If Illinois wins one more, against No. 9 Ohio State, it would claim its first tourney title since 2005.

Ayo Dosunmu scored 18 points for Illinois, and reserve guard Andre Curbelo finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Luka Garza had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Iowa.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Luka Garza scored 24 points, Joe Wieskamp made two key baskets late and No. 5 Iowa fended off Wisconsin 62-57 in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The third-seeded Hawkeyes rallied from a six-point halftime deficit behind Garza. Their all-time leading scorer dominated inside, making 10 of 15 field goals and 4 of 5 free throws. Iowa advanced to face third-ranked Illinois in Saturday’s semifinals. D’Mitrik Trice led Wisconsin with 19 points. The Badgers came into the tournament having lost five of six.

 

Iowa women advance to Big Ten championship game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Monika Czinano scored 27 points, Caitlin Clark added 20 points and 11 assists and sixth-seeded Iowa beat seventh-seeded Michigan State 87-72 to advance to the Big Ten Tournament championship game. The Hawkeyes will on top seed and No. 7-ranked Maryland for the tourney title. Clark, the freshman who is the nation’s leading scorer had consecutive 3-pointers to cap an 11-0 run for a 77-62 lead with six minutes remaining.

Texas women edge Iowa State in overtime 84-82

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kyra Lambert scored 23 points with six 3-pointers, both career highs, and fifth-seeded Texas beat fourth-seeded Iowa State 84-82 in overtime with Longhorns star Charlie Collier on the bench with five fouls in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinal. Ashley Chevalier opened OT with a 3-pointer and the Longhorns clung to the lead the rest of the way, making 8 of 10 free throws in the final 37 seconds. Joanne Allen-Taylor scored 20 points with nine assists, Collier had 17 points and nine rebounds. Iowa State’s Ashley Joens scored 28 points  and grabbed 14 rebounds with Emily Ryan adding 19 points.
