Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson hosted the 5th Annual CB Boys Invite on Thursday and Glenwood came out on top with Lewis Central in second.

Glenwood picked up wins from Silas Bales in the 200M, the 4x100M Relay, and Shuttle Hurdle Relay. Lewis Central won titles in the Distance Medley, Sprint Medley, 4x800M Relay, and Ethan Eichhorn in the 1600M and 3200M Runs. Atlantic’s Craig Alan Becker won the 800M. Audubon’s Gavin Smith won the 110M Hurdles and 400M hurdles. Clarinda fared well in the field events with Grant Jobe winning the Discus, Isaac Jones taking the High Jump, Michael Shull winning the Long Jump, and Logan Green finishing 2nd in the Shot Put.

Carroll and Treynor both came out with 111 points at the T-C Girls Invite on Thursday. The Tigers got wins from Shay Sinnard in the 100M and Long Jump, Hannah Jorgensen in the 200M, Madison Tunning in the 100M Hurdles, Marie Dea in the 3000M, the 4x100M Relay, 4x200M Relay, and Distance Medley. Treynor’s wins were in the Sprint Medley, 4x400M Relay, and Stella Umphreys in the Discus. St. Albert grabbed wins from Carly McKeever in the 400M, Lauren Williams in the 400M Hurdles, and Allie Petry in the High Jump. Tri-Center’s Peyton Pogge won the 1500M.

Glenwood won 4 events on the night and grabbed the team title at their very competitive home meet. Emma Hughes won the 1500M, Carlie Clemmer took the 100M Hurdles, Abby Hughes won the 400M Hurdles, and the Rams won the 4x800M Relay. Harlan picked up wins in the 4x400M Relay and Distance Medley. Lewis Central had a good number of wins with Maddie Bergman in the 100M and Long Jump, the 4x100M Relay, 4x200M Relay, and Atziri Medina in the High Jump. Atlantic’s lone win on the night came from Taylor McCreedy in the 3000M. The Trojans also took 2nd in the Distance Medley, 4x800M Relay, and 4x400M Relay. Creston’s Kelsey Fields swept the podium in the Discus and Shot Put.

Relays competition, April 22-24, including live TV coverage of high school
division competition.

Many top high school student-athletes will compete in track and field
events on Thursday, April 22; but with a limited number of spectators
allowed at Drake Stadium, family and friends are encouraged to watch live
coverage televised on Mediacom’s statewide TV channel, MC22 (#822 or
#722).
The full-day telecast will begin at 9:00 am and continue until 4:00 pm
(1-hr break at noon).

As producers of the sports coverage, RUNNERSPACE.COM will
livestream the high school division events, as well as nearly all events
held during the 3-day Drake Relays competition. NBC Sports network will
have exclusive coverage of events held between 2 pm and 4 pm on Saturday.

Bulldog fans can watch the “Beautiful Bulldog Contest” to be shown on MC22
Sunday, April 25 at 2:30 pm. Replays of the High School Division

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State women’s basketball and Head Coach Bill Fennelly announced the addition of Nyamer Diew [Ny-mere Dew], a 6-1 freshman forward transfer from Butler.

“We are very excited to bring Ny back to her home state,” Fennelly said. “She is an amazing person who will add a great deal to our program both on and off the court. Her versatile skill set combined with her length and athleticism will provide us with many options in how we use her.”

Diew, who hails from Marshall, Minn., graduated high school from Sioux City East in Sioux City, Iowa. In high school, she averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 2.0 steals per contest, while helping the Raiders win two conference championships.

In one season at Butler, Diew averaged 5.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. Diew appeared in 16 games, starting in 10, while averaging 22 minutes of action. Diew shot 36 percent from the floor and 33 percent from deep, and she set a career-high against Xavier with 12 points, five blocks and four steals. Diew also blocked 15 shots in Butler’s final four games of the season.

“I am extremely excited to start this new journey in my college career,” Diew said. “The Butler University community will always be a part of me that I will forever be thankful for. I am excited to grow, not only as a basketball player, but a young woman with the help of the Iowa State women’s basketball program. My teammates have already been amazing, and I cannot wait to meet them all in a few weeks. The Iowa State community is one of the greatest I’ve heard about, so I cannot wait to get to work and play in front of these amazing fans. See you soon Ames and go Cyclones!”

Diew will have four seasons of eligibility remaining.

ST. LOUIS, MO., April 15, 2021 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have selected the contract of rookie outfielder Scott Hurst from their Alternate Training Site and optioned outfielder Lane Thomas to the ATS.   To make room for Hurst on the team’s 40-player Major League roster, the team announced that pitcher Dakota Hudson (right elbow) was transferred from the 10-day Injured List to the 60-day Injured List.

Hurst, 25, will be making his Major League debut with his first game appearance and will wear uniform no. 36.

The left-handed hitting Hurst was the Cardinals 3rd round (94th player overall) draft selection in 2017 out of Cal State-Fullerton University, where he earned First Team All-Big West honors, leading the Titans with 12 home runs and a trip to the College World Series.

The 5-10, 170-pound Hurst appeared in 12 games during Spring Training this year, and owns a .263 (218-for-830) career batting mark with 12 home runs, 90 RBI and 18 steals in 231 games played in the minors.  His highest level of play was at Springfield in the Texas League (AA) in 2019.

Hurst ranked among MiLB leaders in 2019 with his 13 outfield assists between Palm Beach and Springfield.

Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery says Joe Wieskamp will test the NBA waters by entering his name into the draft. Wieskamp is coming off a junior season in which he averaged nearly 15 points per game and shot 46 percent from three point range. He has left the door open to return for his senior season.

Wieskamp went trhrough a similar process after his freshman year before deciding to return to school.

McCaffery believes it is likely Wieskamp will get an invitation to the NBA Draft Combine.

McCaffery says is confident Wieskamp would get drafted.

The Iowa State men’s basketball team continued it’s recent run of recruiting success on Tuesday by securing the commitment of Ames High star guard Tamin Lipsey.  Lipsey becomes the first commit of the 2022 recruiting class for the Cyclones.

Lipsey is a 6-2, 190 pound guard that is considered by most recruiting services to be the top prospect from the state of Iowa in 2022 and is the No. 172 ranked player in the class overall by 247Composite.

Lipsey chose the Cyclones over offers from Minnesota, Nebraska, Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio State, Stanford, and Virginia Tech. He averaged 16.3 points, 5 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game as a junior this past season and helped lead the Little Cyclones to the Class 4A Semifinals.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – Iowa State women’s basketball’s Ashley Joens was one of 20 collegiate women’s basketball student-athletes invited to the 2021 USA Women’s AmeriCup Team trials.

The trials will take place from April 18-21 and will be held at the University of South Carolina. The invitations were handed out by the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Committee and USA Women’s Senior National Team Committee.

Ten nations from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean will take part in the 2021 AmeriCup, held June 11-19 in Puerto Rico. The top four finishing teams will advance to compete in one of four 2022 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournaments in hopes of earning one of the 12 spots in the 2022 FIBA World Cup field. Australia, host of the 2022 World Cup, and the 2020 Olympic champion, earn automatic berths to the World Cup, but will be required to participate in the qualifying process.

USA National Team head coach Dawn Staley (South Carolina) will serve as head coach of the USA AmeriCup Team, and she will be assisted by University of Arizona head coach Adia Barnes and Jennifer Rizzotti, 2021 USA National Team assistant coach.

Joens has won two Gold medals with USA Basketball to date, at the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, where she served as the team captain, and also with the FIBA U19 World Cup.

Joens is fresh off one of the best seasons in Iowa State women’s basketball history. She set a new school record of 24.2 points per game, while finishing the season second in points scored (678), tied for seventh in rebounding average (9.5), fourth in free-throw percentage (.883), third in free-throws made (181), sixth in free throws attempted (205), fourth in field goals made (223), third in field goals attempted (482).

Joens’ 24.2 points per game, led the Big 12 conference and ranked fifth nationally. Her 46.3 percent from the field was also a career best. Joens also finishes the season as the NCAA leader in free throws made with 181.
