Time Correction for Branstad’s Corning Appearance

There’s a time correction for when Governor Terry Branstad will appear Corning.

Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds will conduct an education town hall meeting Friday at 10 a.m. at the Corning Elementary School Gym at 1012 10th Street. A press release had incorrectly listed the meeting’s time as 12:00.

Audubon Co. Comm. Foundation Grant Available

The Chair of the Audubon County Community Foundation would like to remind non-profits that the fall grant program is set to begin.

Currently $31,700 is available for this grant cycle.

Only organizations providing services in Cass County are eligible. They must be able to demonstrate broad county support and supply a copy of their 501 IRS determination letter. Requests for general operational funds will not be considered. The CCCF’s mission is to provide funds to those nonprofit and governmental agencies that are involved in community betterment through their organizations.

Overall the Audubon County Community Foundation will make about $131,650 available in grants and scholarships.

The Atlantic Police Department reports the arrests of two people Wednesday.

38-year-old Katina Wilson of Atlantic was arrested for assault without intent of causing serious injury. She was transported to the Cass County jail where she was booked.

And 24-year-old Jeffrey Knight of Atlantic was arrested for public intoxication. He was transported to the Cass County jail where he was booked.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident in Council Bluffs

An unnamed individual has died in a traffic accident in Council Bluffs this morning.

At about 2:00 Thursday morning police were called to the 1400 block of South 35th street for a motorcycle accident.

Police say a motorcycle with a single rider was southbound on 35th street when the rider lost control. The cycle fell over and the rider fell off, striking their head on the pavement.

The individual suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The special operations unit in Council Bluffs is conducting the investigation.

Alliant Sets New Energy Record in Iowa

Alliant Energy customers in Iowa set a new peak for energy use. The electricity demand of 3,701 megawatts at 6 p.m. Monday tops a peak level that was set in 2003.

The president of Interstate Power and Light Company Tom Aller says there have been very few power outages reported so far this week.

Cass County Arrests

The Cass County Sherrifs Office is reporting several arrests the past few days.

On Monday, 51-year-old Jeffrey Dale Mase of Atlantic was arrested on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. He was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was held on $10,000 bond.

On Sunday three arrests took place. Nineteen-year-old Cody Allen Mills of Atlantic was arrested for OWI 1st Offense. He was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the Monday on his own recognizance.

Fifty-year-old Christopher Shackel Kendrick of Cumberland was arrested for Public Intoxication. He was taken to the Cass County Jail where he released later that same day after pleading guilty.

Also on Sunday, twenty-nine year old Jacob Tyler Blaine of Massena was arrested for OWI 2nd Offense. He was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was relased on his own recognizance.

On Saturday, 22-year-old Noah James Mass of Carson was arrested for OWI 1st Offense, possession of a controlled substance marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released on his own recognizance.

On Friday, 22-year-old Randi Rae Krieg of Cumberland was arrested on a Clay County Warrant. She was transported to the Cass County Jail where she was released later that day on $1,000 bond.

And on July 12th 27-year-old RK Miko of Atlantic was arrested for OWI 1st Offense as the result of a traffic stop. He was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released on his own recognizance.

Cass Co. Board of Supervisors Meeting Recap

The Cass County Board of Supervisors held their regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday morning in Atlantic.

The board approved setting a date for a public hearing on a loan agreement, approved a new county jailer, and held a closed session.

The general obligation urban renewal loan agreement has a principal amount not to exceed $555,000. It will be used for the Amaizing Energy Urban renewal Area consisting of the northwest sewer and water line extension project.

After some discussion among the board members, they unanimously approved a public hearing date regarding the loan that will be held at 9:05 AM on Friday, July 29 at the Cass County Courthouse. Any interested person may give their input at the meeting or submit written comments.

After the public hearing on July 29, the board will vote on entering into the bond agreement.

The board also unanimously approved Amanda Doherty as a county jailer effective as of Sunday, July 17. Doherty is replacing a jailer who had earlier retired.

The board voted unanimously to go into a closed session for a period of about 15 minutes. They discussed litigation and pending litigation matters with county attorney Daniel Feistner.

In other business the board approved setting July 31 – August 5 as Cass County Tourism week, and heard from Micah Lee about a project taking place at Lewis Lake.

Drowning Victim ID’d

Authorities have identified the young boy who was killed in a drowning incident in the Nodaway River near Clarinda.

He was identified as 11-year-old Deontae Haynes of Chicago.

Haynes and small group of other youths had been swimming in the Nodaway River near a Dam in Clarinda. Police say Haynes was wading when he stepped into water over his head and was pulled toward the dam.

16-year-old Tamra Haley of Clarinda attempted to save Haynes but had to be rescued herself the scene.

Haynes was recovered in approximately 27-feet of water by divers and transported to the hospital in Clarinda where he was pronounced dead.

Haley was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha.

Conservation officers with the Iowa DNR, the Page County Sheriff’s Department, the Clarinda Police Department, the Clarinda Fire and Rescue, and several southwest Iowa dive teams all assisted at scene.
