Iowa will host Indiana at 2:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, Sept. 4, with the game airing on BTN. This year marks the first time in 41 years that Iowa opens its season against a Big Ten opponent; the Hawkeyes faced the Hoosiers on Sept. 13, 1980, in Bloomington, Indiana, in the 1980 opener. The home opener is presented by the Eastern Iowa Airport and will honor First Responders.

FryFest is also part of opening weekend. Slated for Friday, Sept. 3, FryFest is held at the Iowa River Landing and celebrates everything Hawkeye. The National Iowa Varsity Club will celebrate the Hall of Fame class throughout the weekend.

Following the opening contest, the Hawkeyes travel to in-state rival Iowa State at 2:30 p.m. The annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game will be televised on ABC.

Iowa welcomes Kent State to Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 18, in the Gold Game. That contest is also slated to kickoff at 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on BTN. Fans are encouraged to wear gold.

The Homecoming contest versus Purdue, presented by GreenState Credit Union, is on Saturday, Oct. 16. That game is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start. The Hawkeyes are the Homecoming opponent at Wisconsin on Oct. 30, with that game designated to begin at 11 a.m.

Iowa’s regular season finale at Nebraska on Black Friday (Nov. 26) will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. and air on BTN.

The Hawkeyes have an open date on Oct. 23. Kickoff times for the remaining five games will be announced no later than 12 days prior to the game, per the media rights agreements between the Big Ten Conference and its television partners.

Six-month program teaches Iowans how to bow hunt for deer

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

May 27th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Registration is now open for the Field To Fork Deer Hunting Program which takes Iowans with zero hunting skills and teaches them to use a compound bow to hunt and kill white-tailed deer. Jamie Cook, the program’s coordinator with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says students will also learn how to field dress the animal and cook venison. Cook notes, it takes a commitment. “The program does go on about six months,” Cook says. “What we’ve learned over time is, with hunting, being a pretty serious life skill, it takes a while to develop and in order to really get to the point where you enjoy it and you’re willing to build confidence, it does take that amount of time.”

For Iowans who want to tackle the challenge of bow hunting as a means of sourcing their own protein or red meat, Cook says the program provides the opportunity to learn what it takes to do it all yourself. “Beginning this summer, our participants will start shooting at a local archery range,” Cook says. “They’ll get some help from professional and hobby archers that can give them tips to increase their proficiency. During the summer we’ll also be sending them some books to read, some chapters, some weekly homework assignments.”

There will also be a series of videos to watch that focus on bow hunting skills and hunting deer in particular. As summer progresses, students will learn basic strategies for hunting deer including the proper equipment, where to hunt, safe shooting practices and tree stand placement. “As we get close to deer season in the fall, we’ll have a couple of workshop days or field days where they’ll come out and learn to do a blood trail, they’ll learn to shoot from a tree stand,” Cook says. “We’ll make sure their proficiency is good, and by that point we’ll also have a mentor available for them, and from there, they get to hunt on their own schedules.”

The course will be hosted in Adel, Altoona and Council Bluffs and is geared for participants 21 and older. The cost is $238.50 which includes tags, licenses, books and archery loaner equipment. The program is part of a national effort to recruit, retain and reactivate hunters due to the overall decline in hunting and outdoor recreation.

Sports

May 26th, 2021 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Former University of Iowa quarterback Jason Manson has been named Director of Player Development for the Iowa football program. The announcement was made Tuesday by head football coach Kirk Ferentz.

“I am happy to bring Jason Manson back to our program in this capacity,” said Ferentz. “Jason was a valued team member and leader during his Iowa career. His perspective and experience since graduation will be a great benefit to our players in his new role.”

The Director of Player Development serves as a guide for student-athletes as they transition from high school to college, supporting their academic and football successes while creating a positive and memorable college experience. Former Hawkeye Sam Brincks has been the interim director for the role over last 10 months.

“I appreciate the contributions Sam made for our program as the interim director,” said Ferentz. “I am thankful that he stepped right in and provided positive feedback and leadership for our current players.”

Manson has been involved in high school administration and coaching since the end of his Hawkeye playing career. He has held the position of assistant Dean of Students and head football coach at St. Thomas More School the last two years. In 2018-19 he served as student management assistant at Greater Hartford (Conn.) Academy of the Arts and head football coach at Capital Prep.

Manson, a native of Bloomfield, Conn., was the head football coach at Capital Preparatory Magnet School from 2014-18, while also serving as director of college and career readiness. He also served as a position coach at Central Connecticut State University from 2010-14, instructor and offensive coordinator at Milford Academy in 2008-09, wide receivers coach at Becker College in 2007 and Western Connecticut State.

As a player at Iowa, Manson lettered in 2005 and 2006, playing both quarterback and wide receiver. His career totals include completing 42-85 pass attempts for 442 yards and one touchdown. He had 22 career rushing attempts for 93 yards and three pass receptions for 22 yards. Manson led Iowa to a double-overtime win at Syracuse in 2006 in his only start at quarterback.

Manson earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies in December, 2006. He was a member of the team Leadership Council for four years and was Iowa’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2006. Manson was a three-year member of the Iowa Student Athlete Advisory Committee (ISAAC) and was awarded the Student Leadership Award by the UI Athletics Department as a senior.

Manson and his wife, Tamika, have three children, Julian (13), Jace (9), and Jaxon (5).
