Harlan mobile home park fire

Firefighters from Harlan along with a Medivac Ambulance crew were called to the scene of a fire at the West Ridge Acres Mobile Home Park (3002 12th St.), early this morning. The call went out just before 4-a.m.  By the time a deputy arrived on the scene moments later, one of the mobile homes was completely engulfed in flames. One person living inside the home was able to escape, but according to dispatch reports, suffered a laceration to his hand.

No other details are currently available.

DUNDEE, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say an 8-year-old girl has been injured after falling 60 feet (18 meters) at a state park in eastern Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said in a news release that the girl was hiking with friends and family Sunday afternoon at Backbone State Park when she fell. A department spokesman said Monday the girl may have fallen down a steep embankment as she jumped from rock to rock.

JEFFERSON, Iowa (AP) – A well-known Iowa bell tower will soon be ringing for the first time in more than 30 years. KCCI-TV reports that a $440,000 renovation project on the Mahanay Bell Tower in Jefferson is expected to finish next week. The project refurbished existing bells and added more than 30 additional bells. The bell tower had been in disrepair since the 1980s and had been playing recordings instead of actually ringing.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say witnesses kept a car driver from drowning in a ditch near Interstate 80 in Council Bluffs. The accident was reported around 9:45 p.m. Saturday. Police say the driver lost control of his car. It grazed a road sign, struck a light pole and ran off the roadway into the ditch. Police say the car was submerged in waist-deep water, but witnesses who had rushed to help kept the driver’s head out of the water.

MCINTIRE, Iowa (AP) – Organizers have raised about half the $10,000 needed for a veterans memorial in a tiny northern Iowa town. Vietnam veteran Marvin King is among those supporting efforts to erect a memorial in the Mitchell County community of McIntire, which has about 120 residents. King says: “We thought every other town has one; why not us?” The Mason City Globe Gazette reports the 20-foot-long limestone monument will include U.S. and Iowa flags.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Chase Utley, Cody Bellinger and Logan Forsythe hit solo home runs, leading Rich Hill and the Los Angeles Dodgers over the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 Monday for their fifth straight victory.

Hill (2-2) recovered from a bout of wildness in his last start to pitch five innings, giving up one run and two hits. In his previous outing, also against the Cardinals, he permitted five runs on four hits and seven walks in four innings.

Mike Leake (5-3) entered the game leading the majors with a 1.91 ERA, but allowed a season-high four runs in 6 2/3 innings.

NORMA EICHELBERGER, 89, of Avoca, died Sunday, May 28th, at Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center. Memorial services for NORMA EICHELBERGER will be held 10-a.m. Friday, June 2nd, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home, in Avoca.

Visitation will be held at the United Church of Avoca from 5-until 7-p.m. Thursday, June 1st.

Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery at Avoca.

Her sons – Rex (Paula) Eichelberger, of Avoca, and Lafe Eichelberger, of Saint Augustine, FL.

Her daughters – Margie (Mike) Espelund, of Council Bluffs, and Sally (Larry) Obrecht, of Harlan.

Friends may call at the funeral on Friday, June 2nd, from 6-until 8-p.m., with the family present.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

PEARL M. YEAGER, 78, of Panora, died Sunday, May 28th, at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center. Graveside services for PEARL YEAGER will be held 10:30-a.m. Thursday, June 1st, at the Brethren Cemetery in Panora. Twigg Funeral Home in Panora has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wed., May 31st, from 5-until 7-p.m.

Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery at Panora.

Her sons – Joe Yeager, of Des Moines; Kevin (Drenda) Yeager, of Linden; Bob Yeager and Wayne Yeager, both of Panora, and Dale Fender, of CO.

DUNDEE, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say an 8-year-old girl has been injured after falling 60 feet at a state park in eastern Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said in a news release that the girl was hiking with friends and family Sunday afternoon at Backbone State Park when she fell. Department spokesman Alex Murphy said Monday that the girl may have been jumping from rock to rock and then slipped, plunging down a steep embankment. He could not confirm the girl’s name.

The girl’s companions called 911 for help, and she was flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Her condition has not been released.

Theft report from Creston P-D

The Creston Police Department says three people reported incidents of Theft, Sunday. A Norfolk, NE residents told police a license plate was taken from his 2009 Toyota Yaris, while it was parked at the Creston Family Restaurant, May 28th.

A resident of the 800 block of N. Sycamore Street in Creston reported that sometime between 8-p.m. Saturday and 10-a.m. Sunday, someone stole a Milwaukee-brand Hackzall and Hitachi 18-volt drill set. The loss was estimated at $175.

And, a resident of the 900 block of N. Lincoln Street in Creston reported that sometime between 9-p.m. Saturday and 7-a.m. Sunday, someone stole his maroon 1996 Buick regal Custom 2-door from his driveway. The vehicle was later located at an undisclosed location.

The Creston Police Department reports five weekend arrests.Early this (Monday) morning, 37-year old Juliann Marquis Edsall, of Creston, was arrested on a Union County warrant for felony Unauthorized Use of a Credit card. She was being held in the Ringgold County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

On Sunday, 24-year old Trevor James Perrigo, of Clive, was arrested for OWI/1st offense, and three counts of Possession of a Concealed Weapon. He was later released on $2,000 bond.

On Saturday, 45-year old Anita Ruth Michael, of Creston, was arrested on a Union County warrant for Failure to Appear in court on a Child Support matter. She was being held in the Ringgold County Jail on a $240 bond. Also arrested Saturday, was 31-year old Joshua David Coulter, of Creston, who was taken into custody on a Union County warrant for felony Forgery, and Theft in the 5th Degree. He was being held in the Union County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

Last Friday, Melissa Shinn, of Creston, was arrested for Driving While Barred. She was later released on $2,000 bond.
