DUNDEE, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say an 8-year-old girl has been injured after falling 60 feet (18 meters) at a state park in eastern Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said in a news release that the girl was hiking with friends and family Sunday afternoon at Backbone State Park when she fell. A department spokesman said Monday the girl may have fallen down a steep embankment as she jumped from rock to rock.

JEFFERSON, Iowa (AP) – A well-known Iowa bell tower will soon be ringing for the first time in more than 30 years. KCCI-TV reports that a $440,000 renovation project on the Mahanay Bell Tower in Jefferson is expected to finish next week. The project refurbished existing bells and added more than 30 additional bells. The bell tower had been in disrepair since the 1980s and had been playing recordings instead of actually ringing.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say witnesses kept a car driver from drowning in a ditch near Interstate 80 in Council Bluffs. The accident was reported around 9:45 p.m. Saturday. Police say the driver lost control of his car. It grazed a road sign, struck a light pole and ran off the roadway into the ditch. Police say the car was submerged in waist-deep water, but witnesses who had rushed to help kept the driver’s head out of the water.

MCINTIRE, Iowa (AP) – Organizers have raised about half the $10,000 needed for a veterans memorial in a tiny northern Iowa town. Vietnam veteran Marvin King is among those supporting efforts to erect a memorial in the Mitchell County community of McIntire, which has about 120 residents. King says: “We thought every other town has one; why not us?” The Mason City Globe Gazette reports the 20-foot-long limestone monument will include U.S. and Iowa flags.
