ISU softball coach Pinkerton receives contract extension

Sports

July 30th, 2021 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State softball coach Jamie Pinkerton has agreed to a contract extension through June 30, 2025.

Pinkerton completed his fourth season at the helm of the Cyclones in 2021, leading Iowa State to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988. After a 34-23 season in 2021, Pinkerton has a record of 105-94 at Iowa State, including a Covid-19 shortened season in 2020. The Cyclones won a pair of games at the 2021 NCAA Regional, advancing to the regional championship for the first time in program history.

“I am very thankful and grateful for the opportunity that President Wintersteen, Jamie Pollard and Calli Sanders have given me to continue to lead the softball program at Iowa State,” Pinkerton said. “Iowa State is where I want to be. I believe we have the softball program going in the right direction, both in the classroom and on the field. I am excited about the future of our program.”

Iowa State also earned its first-ever ranking in the NFCA Top-25 Coaches poll on Feb. 23, 2021, debuting at No. 25 in the country. ISU’s unprecedented success has been sparked by Pinkerton engineering the greatest offense ever seen in Ames. For the third time in his four seasons at Iowa State, the Cyclones set a new school record for home runs – hitting 64 in just 57 games.

Under Pinkerton, Iowa State produced a two-time all-American in Sami Williams. The Cyclones have also had seven All-Big 12 selections and six NFCA All-Midwest Region selections.

UI grad student wins Tillman scholarship

News, Sports

July 30th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A University of Iowa student and military veteran has won the prestigious Pat Tillman Scholar Award. Fort Dodge native Jake Schillo is working on his P-H-D after serving six years in the U-S Air Force as a nuclear weapons specialist. Schillo says he hopes winning the scholarship will open doors for other veterans from Iowa. “Iowa has a large community of veterans pursuing an education that would have incredible applications for the scholarship,” Schillo says. “I’m fortunate enough that the foundation saw something in me that they wanted to invest in and I hope that being the first scholar at Iowa helps to pave the way for future Tillman scholars within our state.”

The award is named after a former N-F-L player who gave up his pro football career to enlist in the U-S Army following the Nine Eleven attacks of 2001. Tillman was killed in 2004 while serving in Afghanistan. Schillo is working on his doctorate in the field of cancer genetics and hopes to open his own cancer research facility in the future. “I’m really focusing on creating new technologies that allow us to understand why patients relapse in cancer therapies,” he says, “so a lot of my research is just in that technology development.”

Schillo is among the 2021 Class of Tillman Scholars, 60 students who were selected from a group of several thousand applicants. Schillo says he’s on pace to graduate from the U-I in May of 2022. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 2005, and has a degrees in biology and chemistry from Minot State University in North Dakota.

Drake runner ruled ineligible at Tokyo Olympics

Sports

July 30th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A Drake runner has been ruled out of the Tokyo Olympics. Yinka Ajayi won’t get the chance to fulfill her Olympic dream. According to the BBC Ajayi is one of 10 track and field standouts from Nigeria who have been ruled ineligible due to improper drug testing leading up to the games. None of the 10 athletes failed a drug test and many were based in the United States and compete collegiately in the U-S. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has accepted responsibility for the botched testing. Ajayi was hoping to be on the track this (Friday) morning to take part in the mixed 4×400 meter relay. Ajayi took part in a Zoom conference last week shortly after arriving in Tokyo.

Ajayi said she was proud to represent Drake at the Olympics.

Ajayi has won three Missouri Valley Conference titles in her first two years with the Bulldogs.
