Hog inventories hit record high, optimism remains for producers

Ag/Outdoor

October 16th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — This time of year is when Iowa pork producers see a large inventory of hogs, as consumers cut back on backyard barbecues. The latest reports show a record number of hogs. Greg Hora of Fort Dodge, president of the Iowa Pork Producers, says despite recent trade tariffs that hurt prices, producers remain optimistic the world wants U-S pork as sow herds expand in Iowa and elsewhere. “We’ve had investment in hog facilities, we’ve had investment in infrastructure, we’ve had investment in packing plants and processing facilities to feed a growing and emerging market around the world,” Hora says.

New trade agreements have recently been signed between the U-S and Mexico, Canada and Japan, while Hora hopes an agreement with China can soon be reached. The fifth largest buyer of American pork is South Korea. “We have to have optimism knowing that in the past year, South Korea has increased the volume of pork being imported into their country from the U.S. by nearly 40%,” Hora says, “which is about a 50% increase in value.” Consumers at home and abroad realize Iowa pork is a great value, he says, and they may soon be able to find additional savings. Hora says, “In the United States, we spend less than 10% of our take-home income on food, but emerging countries are spending 20-25% of their take-home income on food and a country like Japan, they’re spending 18-20% of their take-home income on food.”

He says producers are constantly working on identifying new markets for pork and new ways to serve pork. Iowa ranks first in the nation for pork production with more than 22-million head statewide.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a licensed practical nurse has admitted diverting pain medications from residents of two northeast Iowa nursing homes. Federal prosecutors say 35-year-old Lacey Staveley, from Evansdale, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids. The charges: one count of acquiring a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud, deception or subterfuge; and one count of false statements relating to health care matters. Her sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

Court records say Staveley admitted diverting pain pills from two patients at Cedar Falls Health Care Center in November 2016 and admitted diverting pain pills earlier this year from two patients at Harmony House in Waterloo. Authorities say she didn’t tell Harmony House officials about her employment at Cedar Falls Health Care Center.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs finally lost for the first time with Pat Mahomes at quarterback. But here’s the thing: There was no feeling of defeat in the locker room after the 43-40 loss in New England. The Chiefs came away with a sense of confidence and resolve with their ability to mount a comeback on the road.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Scott Frost says his team had its best practice of the season Monday. That was after the excruciating 34-31 overtime loss at Northwestern. Frost remains concerned that his team will come to accept losing the longer it goes without a win. The Cornhuskers go into their home game against Minnesota this week winless in six games and on a program-worst 10-game losing streak.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State spent much of last season as college football’s plucky underdog. The Cyclones appear ready to burst back onto the national scene after a strange and sluggish start to 2018. They looked more dominant than endearing in throttling West Virginia. Iowa State dismantled the Mountaineers in a 30-14 victory that was much more one-sided than the final score indicated.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The fourth-largest lottery prize in U.S. history will be on the line as numbers are drawn for the Mega Millions game’s $654 million jackpot. The grand prize for Tuesday night’s drawing has grown so enormous because no one has won the jackpot since July 24. Although the jackpot is massive, the odds of matching all six numbers and becoming instantly wealthy are remarkably small at one in 302.5 million. Mega Millions is played in 44 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A judge has scheduled a January trial for a 22-year-old Iowa man charged with killing a top amateur golfer from Spain. District Judge Bethan Currie ruled Monday that Collin Richards will stand trial Jan. 15 for first-degree murder in the death of Iowa State University student Celia Barquin Arozamena. Richards entered a written not guilty plea and waived his right to a speedy trial.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Trump administration is doing its part to help Iowa congressman David Young hold onto his U.S. House seat. Last week President Donald Trump mocked Young’s 3rd district Democratic challenger Cindy Axne at a rally in Council Bluffs and praised the two-term Republican. On Monday, Young’s campaign announced Vice President Mike Pence will join Young for a rally Friday in Des Moines. Polls indicate a close race in the 3rd district, which includes the Des Moines metro area and southwest Iowa.

MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) — Supporters of a right-wing group are asking a judge not to grant a “deluxe legal defense” for a Mexican national charged with killing an Iowa college student. More than 200 people have sent postcards to Judge Joel Yates protesting his decision to authorize $5,000 for an investigator to work with Cristhian Bahena Rivera’s defense. The postcards are distributed by the Virginia-based Secure America Alliance.
