Time to make the donuts, Reynolds visits small business in Sigourney

(Radio Iowa) — Governor Kim Reynolds traveled to southeast Iowa Friday to visit a small business launched by a couple of Florida transplants. Carson King and his son, Zach, moved to Iowa about a year ago to open ‘Oh Donuts’ in Sigourney. The governor gave the whole grain and gluten-free donuts a thumbs up. “What a great concept,” Reynolds said, “not to mention that all the ingredients are organic. They source all of the ingredients locally, in the state of Iowa, which I think is amazing.”

Reynolds said her visit to the unique donut shot gave her an idea. “I’d like to have a ‘Startup Day’ at the Capitol and have startup companies from all across the state come in, just talk about what they’re doing, what’s working, maybe what some of the barriers are – so legislators have a chance to hear first-hand,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds also got to try her hand at making donuts. She said it’s a skill sure to “make her more popular with her grandkids.”

Sioux City I-29 Construction Update

The Iowa Department of Transportation reports that on Wednesday, Dec. 19th, a contractor will shift southbound Interstate 29 traffic in Sioux City off a detour route.  At 9-a.m., the left lane of southbound I-29 will be closed for the application of pavement marking. Later in the morning, Wednesday, the contractor will reopen the left lane and close the right lane, as well as the southbound exit and entrance ramps at Exit 149/Hamilton Boulevard.

While the southbound I-29 right lane is closed, southbound I-29 traffic exiting to Hamilton Boulevard will exit at the southbound Virginia Street exit to Floyd Boulevard and continue to northbound I-29 to Exit 148/Wesley Parkway. Ramp traffic from Hamilton Boulevard to southbound I-29 will go through Wesley Parkway to enter southbound I-29 until pavement markings are completed. Each ramp will reopen as soon as traffic control at that location is complete.

The Western Iowa Conference Wrestling Championships were held Friday night, and will be held again today (Saturday) in Avoca. Friday will be a dual tournament with teams seeded and bracketed. Today will be a traditional tournament with matches starting at 10:00am.

JOHN “Jack” WEIGHTON, 94, of Audubon, died Thursday, Dec. 13th, at the Exira Care Center. Funeral services for “JACK” WEIGHTON will be held 10:30-a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18th, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Audubon. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

A family visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Dec. 17th, beginning at 5-p.m.

Burial will be in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon.

JOHN “Jack” WEIGHTON is survived by:

His wife – Sharlette Weighton, of Audubon.

His daughters – Jacqueline (Dan) Stetzel, and Jan (John) Roberts, all of Audubon.

His son – John (Peggy) Weighton, of Audubon, and James (Ruthanne) Weighton, of Central City, IA.

His step-sons: Kim (Rhonda) Olsen, of Audubon, and Craig Olson, of Des Moines.

8 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 1 step great-grandchild, 1 great-great grandson, other relatives, and many friends.

ELRANE KAY McMILLAN, 68, of LeMars (& formerly of Audubon), died Dec. 4th. A Celebration of Life for ELRANE McMILLAN will be held 11-a.m. Monday, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

A family visitation will be held from 9:30-a.m. until the time of service Monday, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon.

Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

ELRANE McMILLAN is survived by:

Her husband – Mark McMillan, of LeMars.

Her sons – Brad McMillan, of Des Moines, and Scott McMillan, of Englewood, Co.

Her sisters – Cheryl (Ron) Benton, and Julie (Randy) Wegner, all of Audubon.

1 granddaughter, her brother-in-law Wayne (Pat) Lebeck, of Audubon, other relatives and friends.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A controversial high-voltage power line across western Wisconsin has been put into service after almost three years of construction. Supporters say the 180-mile, $580 million Badger Coulee line will enable clean and cheap wind energy from Minnesota and Iowa to reach big cities where there’s demand. Opponents consider it an unnecessary expense that guarantees profits for the owners while discouraging conservation and local renewable energy investments.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A spokeswoman for an Iowa college says the school welcomes a student group’s request to withdraw a union petition filed with the National Labor Relations Board. Grinnell College spokeswoman Debra Lukehart released a statement saying, “The college’s concern has always been about how the expansion of the student union could affect Grinnell’s distinctive culture and diminish educational opportunities for our students.”

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Firefighters in Cedar Rapids say a 43-year-old woman has been hurt in an apartment fire. Fire officials say in a news release that the fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Gateway Apartments. Officials say the woman received CPR at the scene, and was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her condition was not known late Friday afternoon.

UNDATED (AP) — Joe Biden is aware that age is an issue as he ponders a 2020 presidential run. He is talking with friends and longtime supporters about whether he’s too old to seek the White House. That’s according to several sources who have spoken with the 76-year-old former Democratic vice president. It could be the biggest hurdle to launching another bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, especially in an era when many in the party yearn for a new generation of leadership.

UNDATED (AP) — Morningside quarterback Trent Solsma, who has guided his team to the national championship game, leads the Associated Press NAIA All-America team. The team was announced the day before Solsma and Morningside (Iowa) face Benedictine (Kan.) in the NAIA national championship game in Daytona Beach, Florida. Solsma passed for 5,097 yards and an NAIA record 68 touchdowns this season.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Mitch Ballock scored 19 with five 3-pointers and seven rebounds to help Creighton beat Green Bay 86-65. The Bluejays (7-3) pulled away with a 14-2 run that ended at 72-56 on Ty-Shon Alexander’s layup with seven minutes to go. The Phoenix (6-5) got the deficit no closer than 12 from there.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs blew a big fourth-quarter lead against the Chargers on Thursday night, leaving them to stew about a missed opportunity. They could have clinched the AFC West and a first-round playoff bye. Instead, the teams are tied atop the division and the Chiefs could still hit the road when the postseason rolls around.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Chargers can no longer be overlooked, whether it is on the list of Super Bowl contenders or as a headline attraction in their own town. LA’s 29-28 come-from-behind victory over the Kansas City Chiefs moved the 11-3 Chargers into a tie atop the AFC West with two games remaining and clinched them their first postseason berth since 2013.

NEW YORK (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals first-round draft pick Griffin Roberts has been suspended 50 games after testing positive for a drug of abuse. Roberts is a right-handed reliever who was selected 43rd overall from Wake Forest this year. He pitched for Class A Palm Beach after signing for $1,664,200 and had been expected to move quickly through the minor leagues. This was Roberts’ second violation for a drug of abuse, and he will not be paid during the suspension.

Wheelers roll past Tri-Center to improve to 5-2

The Audubon Wheelers boys basketball team notched a road win on Friday night with a 83-66 decision over Tri-Center. Audubon raced out to an early 13 points lead at the end of the first quarter and led by 12 at the half 44-32. Tri-Center didn’t go away quietly and made the Wheelers work for the win down the stretch. The Trojans pulled within 5 a couple of times in the fourth quarter but Audubon always seemed to have a response. The Wheelers poured in six 3’s in the final period to stave off the Trojans and pull away at the end.

Audubon had two players hit the 25-point plateau on the night, Tate Killeen had 28 and Lane Lawson finished with 25 to give Audubon their fifth win on the season. The Wheelers will host Underwood next Tuesday night.

Tri-Center had two players reach double figures in scoring during the loss. Brady Huebner led the Trojans with 19 and Jackson Raone finished with 14. The Trojans will travel to face IKM-Manning next Tuesday.
