CLARINDA – Members of the Midwest Regional Dive Team from Cass and area Counties, were searching the West Nodaway River on the east side of Clarinda late Thursday night for a possible drowning victim. The team was searching in an area near a dam north of the E, Washington Street Bridge.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton has snagged a big endorsement as she brings her presidential campaign to the Iowa State Fair. Former Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is endorsing Clinton’s bid for the Democratic nomination, writing in the Des Moines Register that Clinton is “a fighter who has a record of getting things done.”

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A broken sewer pipe under a street in on the east edge of Dubuque has caused a release of untreated wastewater into a storm sewer. City public works officials say they discovered the wastewater leak Thursday afternoon. Crews are working to identify the exact location of the broken pipe.

PILOT MOUND, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa district court judge says a man is obligated to let a company survey his land as part of a proposal for an oil pipeline. The Messenger reports Judge John Haney says in a ruling filed this month that Dakota Access LLC has the right to temporarily enter Laverne Johnson’s property in Boone County to examine the land, which is in the path of the proposed pipeline. Haney says the move does not interfere with fundamental property rights.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A 38-year-old man in an Iowa jail has been accused of setting fire to a car outside the Texas Capitol on August 7th. A Texas Department of Public Safety statement issued Thursday says Iowa resident Michael Patrick Wagner was arrested in Marion, Iowa on an unrelated charge.

Anita and Wiota Fire and Rescue were called to the scene of an accident Thursday, at around 9:30-p.m. According to dispatch reports, a semi struck a bridge on Interstate 80 westbound at the 72 mile marker. Following the crash the truck entered the north ditch and remained upright.

Members of the Midwest Regional Dive team, including those with Cass County Sheriff’s Department, were called to the scene of a reported, possible drowning on the east side of Clarinda, Thursday night. The page went out at around 9:15-p.m.

The incident reportedly occurred near a dam just north of the East Washington Street bridge over the West Nodaway River. The team was still on the scene early this (Friday) morning.

No other details are currently available. The Midwest Regional Dive Team is comprised of members from Cass, Adams and Ringgold Counties, as well as the Clarinda and Red Oak Fire and Rescue Departments.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Food banks nationwide are dealing with rising demand despite the growing economy, leading some charities to reduce the amount they offer each family. U.S. food banks are expected to give away about 4 billion pounds of food this year. Feeding America, the nation’s primary food bank network, says that’s more than double the amount provided a decade ago. The group gave away 3.8 billion in 2013.

Food bank reliance exploded when the economy tanked in 2008, but groups say demand still rises each year. Some economists say the increased demand is surprising because the economy is growing and unemployment has been cut nearly in half since the recession. But many people who have found jobs are working only part-time or for low wages, and others have stopped looking for work.

The Chairpersons for the Cass and Audubon County Community Foundations are reminding non-profit organizations in the two counties, that the deadline to apply for funds through the online grant application process is September 1st.

Cass County has been allocated $28,000. The amount of funds available in Audubon County is $41,170. Only those organizations providing services in Cass County and Audubon County respectively are eligible for the funds in each respective county.

Organizations must be able to demonstrate broad community/county support and supply a copy of their 501(c)(3) IRS determination letter. Requests for general operational funds will not be considered. The Denison Police Department reports the arrest on Wednesday, of James Bernard Schiltz, of Denison. Schiltz was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Methamphetamine, Driving While Barred and cited for having No Insurance.

The Page County Sheriff’s Office says a traffic stop Wednesday resulted in a short pursuit, and the arrest of a Missouri man on a trio of charges. 48-year old Michael James Brown, of Burlington Junction, Mo., faces charges of Eluding, Driving While License Suspended, and a citation for Improper use of registration (the Iowa plates were issued for another vehicle). Brown was brought to the Page County Jail and later released on $1,000 bond.

The incident began when Page County Deputy was trying to stop a car driven by Brown, on the southwest corner of Shambaugh. During the incident, the vehicle sped-off, heading west on 270th Street. After a brief pursuit, the vehicle pulled into a residence drive in the 2500 block of 270th, and Brown was arrested without further incident.

SAC CITY, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say a crop-dusting plane has crashed shortly after taking off from an airport in northwest Iowa. The Sac County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Thursday that the accident was reported about 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Sac City Airport manager said the plane had crashed south of the airport and that airport officials were in contact with the pilot, who said he hadn’t been injured.

The pilot was identified as 50-year-old Randall Sievert, of Alta. He reported that he noticed engine trouble after takeoff and was trying to return to the airport when he crashed into a cornfield. The crash is being investigated.

A group representing more than 1,000 hospitals and health systems has given the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, and Crystal Starlin, CCMH Pharmacy Director, a prestigious award for their outstanding leadership in promoting and advocating on behalf of the federal 340B Drug Pricing Program.

The group, 340B Health, gave the hospital and Starlin the annual “340B Champion Award” in Washington, D.C., on July 13th during a national conference on the 340B program attended by more than 1,400 healthcare professionals and others.

Named for the section of the Public Health Service Act that established it, the 340B program requires pharmaceutical manufacturers and biotech companies to give discounts on outpatient medications to hospitals, community health centers, and other healthcare facilities serving large low-income and vulnerable populations. Those healthcare providers use the money they save to serve more patients and provide more comprehensive services.

340B Health chose Starlin for the award on the basis of her advocacy of 340B, including a March 4, 2015 op-ed she wrote for the Atlantic News Telegraph. In that article, Starlin observed that Cass County Memorial Hospital uses 340B savings to provide medications to needy patients; to help support a pharmacy in Anita; and to sustain its inpatient psychiatric unit (one of only 14 in Iowa). Starlin also is a leading advocate of the 340B program on the micro-blogging site Twitter.

As Biopharmaceutical manufacturers are lobbying Congress to scale back the 340B program dramatically, officials say advocacy such as Crystal’s will be important for ensuring the continuation of the 340B program.

The Cass County LEPC (Local Emergency Planning Committee) was presented with an award at the recent 2015 Region 7 LEPC/TERC (Tribal Emergency Response Commission) Conference held in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Region 7 is comprised of LEPCs from the states of Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and TERC from Nine Tribal Nations. Awards were given to recognize LEPC’s/TERC’s that are actively involved in their community risk reduction, planning, and prevention activities involving hazardous materials and other hazards.

The Cass County LEPC was one of four award winners in the Small LEPC category. The other recipients were Anderson County, Kansas, Linn County, Missouri and Adair-Guthrie, Iowa. The Adair-Guthrie LEPC also received a Social Media award.

The Cass County LEPC was nominated by The Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The Chairperson of the Cass County LEPC is Ric Hanson of KJAN Radio.

Local Emergency Planning Committees develop hazardous materials response plans for their counties, review the plan at least annually, and provide information about chemicals in the community to citizens. LEPC membership includes elected officials, law enforcement, fire, public health, hospital, emergency management, facility representatives, community groups and the media.
