Update on possible severe weather occurring Wednesday

Weather

April 15th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

The National Weather Service says thunderstorms are likely across much of Iowa on Wednesday and into early Wednesday night. There will be a threat of severe weather with some of the storms, especially from late in the day through the evening. Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary threats, but there is a possibility of isolated tornadoes as well. The primary threat seems to have shifted further east (Des Moines and southeast/southern Iowa), but the risk of severe weather in the KJAN listening area cannot be ruled out.

Now is a good time to review your severe weather plan, and be sure to monitor the latest forecast updates leading up to Wednesday!

Atlantic City Council to holding a hearing re: Downtown Revitalization Project

News

April 15th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic City Council has a full agenda for their meeting 5:30-p.m. Wednesday in their chambers at City Hall. Among the topics of discussion, is that which pertains to erosion issues and possible remedies for Troublesome Creek, which is seeing increased erosion near the AMU well fields, and that will eventually encroach on the trail system. Snyder and Associates’ Jeff Godwin will explain the problem in more detail and how it can be fixed.

The Council will then hold a Public Hearing on Designating the Urban Renewal Area for the Atlantic Downtown Revitalization Project, as part of the required process of formally applying to the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Downtown Revitalization Fund. SWIPCO’s Alexis Fleener will be present to update the Council on the project. The hearing will be followed by action on a Resolution of “Necessity to establish the boundaries of the Atlantic Facade Improvements Phase 1 Project Area by identifying the District a blighted area.”

The Council will act on a related Resolution to authorize Mayor Dave Jones to make an application to the CDBG Downtown Revitalization Fund, and act on an Order to Adopt an Administrative Plan for the Atlantic Downtown Revitalization Project. In other business, the Council will consider a bid of $5,350 for City-Owned Property at 602 Spruce Street, which is the full price for the lot.

They will also hold a Public Hearing on the Plans, Specifications and Form of Contract for the 2019 Palm Street Improvement Project, the 85 page document for which is available in advance by request, from the City Administrator. The hearing will be followed by: a Resolution approving the plans, specs & form of contract; a review of the construction bids, and awarding of contract for the project.

Among the other action items on the City Council’s agenda, is the setting of a bid date and public hearing for the addition of a break room to the City Shed on the northwest side of town. The City has set aside $100,000 for the proposed project (that does NOT mean it will cost that much. It’s the maximum budgeted). The Council will also act on an Order to approve an electrical easement for an alley off 10th Street, (east of 708 W. 10th Street) between Birch and Mahogany Drive, as a follow-up to a request from AMU.

And last but not least, the Council will hold the first reading of an Ordinance amending a 2011 Re-codification of the Municipal Code enacted to assist City Officials and the RAGBRAI Committee in dealing with the public health and safety issues associated with the event to be held July 21st-22nd. And, the Mayor will discuss the future of the Atlantic Senior Center. New developments include: another party has expressed an interest in the building, and that they Elks may be considering another bid submission. Mayor Jones is likely to have the matter reviewed by the Personnel and Finance Committee, according to City Administrator John Lund.

Iowa ranks #4 in the US for adults volunteering their time

News

April 15th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — A new survey finds Iowans are very generous with their spare time, with more than four in ten of the state’s adults volunteering during 2018. Dan Cardinali, president and C-E-O of Independent Sector, says Iowa’s 41-point-five percent volunteer rate is among the best in the country, as the national average is about 30-percent. “Last year in Iowa, we saw a million folks volunteering,” Cardinali says, “and that creates an enormous amount of value when you see that each hour of those Iowans is worth about $23.41, which is up in terms of the value of each hour by about 3% from the previous year.”

Iowa’s volunteerism rate is the fourth-best in the nation, behind only Oregon, Montana and top-ranked Utah. The report finds Iowans donated more than 75-million hours of their time with an economic impact of nearly two-billion dollars.  “Volunteers do all sorts of amazing things, from working in food banks to supporting places of worship to volunteering at museums and donating time as board members,” Cardinali says, “or volunteering with kids in community health centers across the state, and really across the country.”

While volunteerism is vital to keeping the economic engine of the state and nation running, Cardinali says certain federal regulations tend to discourage people from donating their time. “If you were to get in your car and go to a work meeting, you would get reimbursed for that mileage and you would get about 54-cents for every mile that you drove if you were working and getting paid a wage,” Cardinali says. “If you did the exact same trip and were volunteering in the exact same place, you’d only get 14-cents back on that.”

A bill pending before Congress would level that disparity, he says. The Volunteer Driver Appreciation Act is sponsored by Congressman Collin Peterson of Minnesota.

GoServ looking for more volunteers to help Hamburg

News

April 15th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — GoServe Global in Eagle Grove is one of the groups helping with the flood recovery, and they are looking for more volunteers. GoServe spokesman, Dennis Anderson says they are now working in Hamburg. “Gutting and mucking out houses — which means we are tearing out contents which have been destroyed by the flood — and then taking our carpet and some drywall, everything that needs to be taken out to prevent mold from growing,” Anderson says.

Part of Hamburg is still under water and will eventually be ready for recovery. “On the north end of town we still have some work to do, as the water recedes there will be more and more work to do,” according to Anderson. “Unfortunately we’re probably looking at some of those houses as potentially being a total loss. But there are other homes we will have to go in and take out everything down to studs.”

He says they have seen a wide variety of emotions as they work to help the flood victims. “Everybody is different as we all know. Some people — they are really struggling with it at this point — and some of them don’t even want to go back into their houses,” Anderson says.  Other homeowners are on the opposite end of the scale. “You know they have a really good attitude about it — they understand it was a disaster and they had no control over it– and so they are just rolling with it,” He says. “Everybody will process it differently and so some of those people who are doing good now at a later date will probably really struggle with it.”

You can volunteer by calling Dennis Anderson at 712-887-0862. Or you can also donate at the GoServe website. (https://goservglobal.org/)
