Fremont and Page county producers eligible to apply for USDA FSA emergency loans

WASHINGTON, July 9, 2019 — Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue designated five Missouri counties as primary natural disaster areas. Producers in Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Holt and Ray counties who suffered losses caused by recent excessive rainfall and flooding may be eligible for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans.

This natural disaster designation allows FSA to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters. Emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation or the refinance of certain debts.

Producers in the contiguous Missouri counties of Caldwell, Carroll, Clay, Clinton, DeKalb, Gentry, Jackson, Lafayette, Nodaway and Platte, along with Fremont and Page counties in Iowa; Atchison and Doniphan counties in Kansas; and Nemaha, Otoe and Richardson counties in Nebraska, are also eligible to apply for emergency loans.

The deadline to apply for these emergency loans is Feb. 25, 2020.

FSA will review the loans based on the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability.

FSA has a variety of additional programs to help farmers recover from the impacts of this disaster. FSA programs that do not require a disaster declaration include: Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-Raised Fish Program; Emergency Conservation Program; Livestock Forage Disaster Program; Livestock Indemnity Program; Operating and Farm Ownership Loans; and the Tree Assistance Program.

Farmers may contact their local USDA service center for further information on eligibility requirements and application procedures for these and other programs. Additional information is also available online at farmers.gov/recover.

ELDORA, Iowa (AP) — A man and woman accused of confining the man’s son in a basement in central Iowa have taken plea deals.

Hardin County District Court records say 31-year-old Alex Shadlow pleaded guilty Monday to kidnapping and two counts of child endangerment. Prosecutors lowered the kidnapping charge in return for Shadlow’s pleas.

His girlfriend, 40-year-old Traci Tyler, pleaded guilty to three counts of child endangerment causing serious injury. She was found guilty in April of misdemeanor false imprisonment.

Sentencings haven’t been scheduled.

Prosecutors say Tyler and Shadlow locked his 8-year-old son in a space beneath the basement stairs of their Ackley home for at least nine hours a day in summer 2017. The boy told authorities he slept on concrete, had no access to a bathroom and food was withheld.

Audubon moves forward on water and sewer improvement plans

News

July 9th, 2019 by admin

The City of Audubon is moving forward on their water and sewer improvement plans after some decisions were made at the City Council’s regular monthly meeting on Monday.

City Clerk Joe Foran said part of the water improvement plan is to replace some meters so billing can sync up for everybody each month and a contract was awarded for that work.

Foran said they will be signing the contract with Building Crafts for the meter work within the next month and work will likely start within the next couple of months.

The sewer improvement plan is moving forward as they entered into an agreement with JEO for phase 2 of the Wastewater Collection System Improvements.

Some lining will be done to improve the sewer system with the grant money.

Foran also said the council passed a third reading of a city wide urban revitalization plan.

The Council also discussed some bus traffic flow changes at the elementary school and advertising for a Public Works Assistant due to a retirement in the department.
