The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2018 Nissan Sentra driven by 50-year old Lisa Kay Pearson-West, of Des Moines, was traveling east on Highway 163 in Pleasant Hill at around 9:15-a.m., when she turned in front of a 2018 Peterbilt Semi driven by 63-year old Kevin John Deronde, of Oskaloosa, as he was traveling west on Highway 163, approaching the intersection with NE 70th Street.

The semi struck the car on its passenger side. Following the collision, both vehicles left the road and went into the northwest ditch, where the semi rolled onto its driver’s side. No. 20 Iowa rolls past Rutgers 30-0, Stanley throws 3 TDs

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nate Stanley threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns and No. 20 Iowa rolled past Rutgers 30-0 on Saturday in its Big Ten opener. New Jersey native Ihmir Smith-Marsette caught two TD passes for the Hawkeyes (2-0, 1-0 Big Ten), who’ve allowed just 14 points in two games ahead of next week’s rivalry showdown at No. 25 Iowa State.

Stanley found Smith-Marsette and Tyrone Tracy for first-half touchdowns to help Iowa take a 20-0 lead at the break. Stanley then connected with Smith-Marsette from 23 yards out to make it 27-0. Smith-Marsette finished with 113 yards receiving. Iowa’s defense smothered Rutgers (1-1, 0-1), which scored 48 points in its opener over UMass. The Scarlet Knights gained just 125 yards, punted 10 times and turned it over three times.
THE TAKEAWAY
Iowa: Rutgers has yet to beat a ranked league opponent since joining the Big Ten, so it’s not as though the Hawkeyes faced a ton of resistance. Still, Iowa’s defense crippled the Scarlet Knights from their opening drive, and the 97-yard touchdown drive the Hawkeyes put together in the second quarter was a good sign for their surging offense.
Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights thought they had found their quarterback when McLane Carter threw for 340 yards last week. But Rutgers made the switch back to Artur Sitkowski at halftime after Carter threw for just 22 yards — only to watch Sitkowski throw for 19 in 11 attempts. It could be another long year in Piscataway.
POLL IMPLICATIONS
Iowa could move up a few spots after thoroughly dominating a conference opponent.
UP NEXT
The Hawkeyes travel to face rival Iowa State next week.
Rutgers has a bye next week. The Scarlet Knights host Boston College on Sept. 21.

Iowa attorney general says Facebook’s power merits inquiry

News

September 7th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s attorney general says his office is joining a multi-state investigation to determine whether Facebook has violated any antitrust laws. Attorney General Tom Miller says Facebook’s dominance over communications and information is concerning and warrants the investigation he’s leading along with 8 other attorneys general.

Miller says the goal is to determine whether Facebook’s actions “may have endangered user data, reduced the quality of consumers’ choices, or stifled competition.” He says the inquiry is in the early stages and has reached no conclusions.

Facebook said in a statement Friday it plans to “work constructively” with the state attorneys general and welcomes a conversation with policymakers about competition. The other states involved in the inquiry are Colorado, Florida, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and the District of Columbia.

Quick start not enough for Trojans against Creston

Sports

September 7th, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans football team got off to a rousing start against Creston on Friday night with two early big plays to lead 13-0. That lead wouldn’t hold up as the Panthers scored 35 unanswered the rest of the way to win 35-13. Creston senior quarterback Eli Loudon threw for 216 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran for another score, leading the Panthers to a 2-0 start to the season.

Atlantic started the game hot on two big plays by senior running back Tyler Moen. Moen intercepted a Loudon pass on the Panthers first offensive possession and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. The Trojan defense then forced a turnover on downs to give Atlantic the ball back on their own 22. Moen then ripped off a 78 yard touchdown run on the first offensive play after the turnover and gave Atlantic the early 13-0 lead. It didn’t take long for Creston to answer. Two plays later Creston tailback Rylan Luther went 80 yards for a score. The Panthers then intercepted Trojans quarterback Garrett McLaren and then took a shot down field at the end of the first quarter. That shot paid off, with a 76 yard scoring strike from Loudon to Cael Kralik. That tied the game and the Panthers kept the momentum up until half. Loudon hooked up with Derek Paup for a 23-yard score on a 7 play drive. Then the Panthers got a great catch from Luke Latham near the goal-line at the end of the half to set up a Loudon 1 yard scoring plunge. The Panthers tacked on one more score on the first drive of the second half to provide the final margin.

Atlantic had three drives in the second half to the Creston 20 or closer,  but couldn’t come away with points. Trojan Head Coach Mike McDermott said the red zone execution is something they will have to work on.

Atlantic showed flashes of good play on both sides of the ball, but just couldn’t do anything with consistency throughout the game.Coach McDermott said that will be a focus in practice this week.

Creston improves to 2-0 on the young season and will face another strong test with a road trip to Carlisle next week. Atlantic falls to 1-1 and they will travel to face Clarinda next Friday night. We’ll have that game for the Trojans next week on KJAN.
