BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man in Burlington, Iowa. Burlington Police Lt. Adam Schaefer says officers were called shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. They found a 28-year-old man with a gunshot wound when they arrived. The victim was taken to a hospital where he later died.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The 14th Iowa City Zombie March takes place Sept. 21 in downtown Iowa City. Zombies will assemble at College Green Park, and assistance with zombie make-up will be available starting at 4 p.m. The march will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m., when participants will shamble through Iowa City, ending with an after-party. Proceeds from the march will go to support programs to feed the hungry, homeless and at-risk.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s attorney general says his office is joining a multistate investigation to determine whether Facebook has violated any antitrust laws. Attorney General Tom Miller says Facebook’s dominance over communications and information is concerning and warrants the investigation he’s leading along with 8 other attorneys general. Miller says the goal is to determine whether Facebook’s actions “may have endangered user data, reduced the quality of consumers’ choices, or stifled competition.”

(AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a testy and tactful 40-26 victory over the injury-riddled Jacksonville Jaguars. The Chiefs lost star receiver Tyreek Hill to a shoulder injury. The Jaguars lost quarterback Nick Foles for an extended period because of a broken left clavicle.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs star Tyreek Hill was transported to a hospital after sustaining a shoulder injury during a 40-26 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team’s head athletic trainer detailed the precautions emergency personnel took with the Pro Bowl receiver. Rick Burkholder says Hill had a “sternoclavicular joint injury,” which is where the collarbone meets the sternum and can become a serious medical issue.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jack Flaherty had another strong start in his scintillating second half, scattering five hits over eight electric innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 23-year-old Flaherty struck out 10 and walked just one to win for the sixth time in his last eight starts to drop his post All-Star break ERA to 0.76. Carlos Martinez worked a perfect ninth inning for his 19th save. St. Louis has won 8 of 11 overall.
MIAMI (AP) — Sandy Alcantara became the first Marlins pitcher with two shutouts in his rookie season since Dontrelle Willis, and Miami beat the Kansas City Royals 9-0. Alcantara threw a four-hitter with two walks and eight strikeouts for his first victory since the All-Star break. Willis had two shutouts while winning Rookie of the Year in 2003. Starlin Castro hit his 18th home run and drove in two for the Marlins.
Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater reports two arrests from the past week. On Friday, 36-year old Luke Allan Mullen, of Carbon, was arrested on a warrant for Failure to Appear on original charges of Trespass resulting in injury or damage greater than $200, and Domestic Abuse Assault by injury or mental illness/1st offense. Mullen was initially held without bond in the Adair County Jail, but following his initial court appearance, his cash or surety bond, which was set at $1,000, was posted Sept. 7th, and he was released.
On Sept. 2nd, 18-year old Malachi Shon Elms, of Greenfield, was arrested on a Felony Bench warrant out of Tulare County, California, for Failure to Appear. He waived extradition, and was being held without bond in the Adair County Jail, pending pick-up by authorities in California.
Red Oak Police, Sunday afternoon, arrested a man and woman on charges associated with the violation of a Protection Order. 22-year old Devon Lee Smith, of Red Oak, was arrested for Violating a Protection Order. He was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $300 bond. 19-year old Kammi Shaylee Conrade, of Red Oak, was arrested for Aiding and Abetting a Protection Order, and was also being charged with Violating the Order. Her bond was also set at $300.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Despite losing star receiver Tyreek Hill early, Patrick Mahomes threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a testy and tactful 40-26 victory over the injury-riddled Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
Mahomes took a beating and even had to leave the game to get his left ankle taped in the second quarter. He nonetheless looked every bit as good as he did during last year’s MVP campaign, leading the Chiefs to scores on each of their first seven possessions.
Sammy Watkins caught nine passes for a career-high 198 yards and three TDs. Watkins slipped through the middle of Jacksonville’s defense for a 68-yard score on the third play of the season and added a 49-yard TD reception late in the opening quarter. He made defenders Ronnie Harrison, Jalen Ramsey and Miles Jack look silly while strolling into the end zone twice. He beat Ramsey again for a short TD in the fourth period.
Jacksonville had major issues on both sides of the ball, fairly reminiscent of last year’s 16-point loss at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 5. This one may have been more of a debacle — and maybe more costly.
Mahomes picked apart what some believed is an elite defense, throwing for 313 yards in the first half and doing most of it without Hill. The three-time Pro Bowler departed after landing on his left shoulder near the sideline.
But considerably more concerning for the Jaguars, they lost quarterback Nick Foles to a left shoulder injury in the opening quarter, and rookie linebacker Quincy Williams (knee) in the second half. Chris Jones hit Foles as he released a 35-yard TD pass to DJ Chark. Jones landed on top of Foles, but did not draw a flag.
Foles looked to be in pain as he walked to the sideline to be evaluated. He then jogged into the locker room for further tests and did not return.
The Jaguars gave Foles a four-year, $88 million contract in April with the belief he would solve the franchise’s two-decade-old search for a quarterback. He didn’t make it through a quarter, and now Jacksonville might have rookie Gardner Minshew under center for a stretch. Minshew was the team’s lone bright spot: He completed 22 of 25 passes for 275 yards, with two TDs and an interception.
The Jaguars already were without starting left tackle Cam Robinson (knee) and backup Cedric Ogbuehi (hamstring), leaving guard Will Richardson to make his first career start at a new position.
JACK EJECTED
Jaguars linebacker Jack was ejected in the second quarter after taking a swing at Chiefs receiver Demarcus Robinson. Jack had to be restrained by team officials and essentially pulled off the field.
Jack and receiver Sammy Watkins got into a shoving match after a fumble, and then Robinson came in and shoved Jack in the back. Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey and others joined in, prompting officials to throw five flags and a hat onto the ground. Jack eventually got the boot after a lengthy discussion.
RARE FUMBLE
Jacksonville’s Leonard Fournette gained 66 yards on 13 carries and fumbled for the first time in his three NFL seasons. Damien Wilson stripped the ball out of Fournette’s hands after a catch in the flat.
It was Fournette’s first lost fumble since Nov. 12, 2016, during his junior year at LSU. That came at Arkansas.

Audubon Police Chief Matt Starmer, today (Sunday), reported three arrests took place over the last couple of weeks, and one citation was issued. On Tuesday, Sept. 3rd, 24-year old Joshua Adam Petersen, of Carroll, was arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Interference With Official Acts.
On August 31st, 28-year old Mackenzie Jacob Belnap, of Columbus Junction, was arrested on a Failure to Appear Warrant. And, on August 24th, 38-year old Bobby Lee Stevens, of Audubon, was arrested for Domestic Abuse – 2nd Offense.
All three individuals were transported to the Audubon County Jail, and held pending an appearance before a magistrate. And, on Sunday, Sept. 8th, 30-year old Barbara Anne Christo, of Audubon, was cited for Allowing Dog to run At Large. Christo was released on promise to appear in court.
CHARLES HARRIS, JR., 93, of Greenfield, died Thursday, September 5th, at the Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Celebration of Life Services for CHARLES HARRIS, JR., will be held 1:30-p.m. Sunday, September 15th, at the United Methodist Church in Greenfield. Police in Burlington are investigating an early Sunday morning shooting incident that resulted in the death of a 28-year old male. Police responded at around 1:40-a.m. to a residence in the 800 block of Columbia Street, with regard to multiple shots being fired. When they arrived on the scene, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The man’s name was not immediately released. He was transported to a hospital in West Burlington, were he was pronounced deceased.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting Burlington Police in their ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Burlington Crime Stoppers at 319-753-6835, or the Burlington P-D’s CID (Criminal Investigations Division) at 319-753-8375.
