ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Valley Football Conference named UNI freshman quarterback Will McElvain the Newcomer of the Week after leading UNI to 34 straight points en route to a 34-14 win over Southern Utah Saturday in Cedar Falls.

McElvain went 17-of-25 for 262 yards and three touchdowns to lead UNI to the win. He was 14-of-20 for 234 yards and three TDs before the half when the Panthers took their foot off the gas pedal.

He completed six of his first eight passes and threw three touchdowns to three different receivers while not throwing an interception.

He also ran for 23 yards on eight carries. He was on the passing end of Deion McShane’s circus catch and play that ended up the No. 6 play on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Saturday night.

With two games under his belt, he is 42-67 for 490 yards and four touchdowns.

It is the first player of the week honor for McElvain and the second honor of the year for the Panthers. Freshman kicker Matthew Cook was named the National Special Teams Player of the Week after his 4-4 performance against Iowa State in week one.

Settlement payment plan reached in Multi-State Lottery scam

News

September 10th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The lawyers representing a group of players who sued the Multi-State Lottery Association say a settlement payment plan has been reached. The players had filed a class action lawsuit involving the scam by Eddie Tipton — the former I-T director for the Multi-State Lottery Association — who rigged lottery drawings in at least five states so Tipton and his associates could collect the winnings.

The settlement has a fund of four-point-three million dollars to reimburse the cost of losing tickets for a set of drawings between November of 2005 and November 2013. Those who have a claim can go to: LotteryGameSettlement.com. Tipton is serving a 25-year prison sentence for setting up the lottery scam.

Clear Lake’s memorial snowmobile race ends 10-year run

News

September 10th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (AP) — Organizers have announced the end of a memorial snowmobile race on Clear Lake in northern Iowa. The organizers of the Jack Helgren Memorial Race say the event has been discontinued after its 10-year run because members of the original organizational group have decided to retire.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that the race is named after Jack Helgren, an area businessman, former snowmobile dealer and avid racer who died in 2009. The two-event featured snowmobile races, a vintage snowmobile show and live music.

The event, historically scheduled in January, was postponed to February this year because of unseasonable temperatures and poor ice conditions. The race was held on the lake ice, and snowmobilers and spectators parked on the ice as well.
