(Radio Iowa) — Rocker Brett Michaels spent Thursday in Sioux City visiting with members of the Iowa Air National Guard 185th Refueling Wing touring their base. The former singer for Poison and reality T-V star is bringing his Hometown Heroes concert tour to the Tyson Events Center tonight (Friday). “To be here with all these amazing men and women who give us such incredible freedoms…we got off the bus and it’s already been a great party. Everyone here has been amazing, and I am honored to be here and to thank them for the freedoms that they allow us,” Michaels says.

Michaels says this show will be extra special since it happens on the weekend leading up to Veterans Day. “And the best part of the night is during ‘Something to Believe In’ we bring our military men and women, our first responders, teachers, utility workers and fans. We grab a bunch of them and bring them up on stage — and it is awesome,” Michaels says. Colonel Larry Christensen is one of the Hometown Heroes.

“It’s a great opportunity to represent not only the 185th, but the Iowa National Guard, the people of the Siouxland Community, all the employers out there, and also all the veterans,” according to Christensen. “I was talking to him and I was thanking him for coming and I said ‘that’s a really great morale boost.’ He says ‘you don’t realize how much a of morale boost it is for his crew.’ So, he’s just as excited as we are.”

Michaels will perform with Night Ranger, Lita Ford and Joe Nichols.

NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa wants to buy more land in North Liberty. The Iowa Board of Regents is being asked next week to approve spending nearly $2.2 million for about 22 acres adjacent to 38 acres the university already owns north-northwest of its Iowa City campus. It’s unclear what the university has planned for the land, and officials have declined to outline the university’s intentions.

A sign that’s long been in place on the 38 acres says a University of Iowa health care facility is “coming soon.” The 22 acres are owned by a church.

The Iowa State Patrol reports a crossover-type SUV driven by 48-year old Karry Schurke, of Denison, was traveling east on Crawford County Road E-16 at around 11:20-p.m., when for reasons unknown, his vehicle crossed the center line of the road. A semi, driven by 33-year old Leonel Pena, of Sioux City, was traveling westbound. Pena took evasive action by braking and steering left to try and avoid the SUV, but Schurke then tried to get back in his lane. Unfortunately, the semi and SUV collided in an off-set head-on manner.

The SUV came to rest facing north in the eastbound lane, and the semi entered the south ditch. Schurke died at the scene. Pena was transported by ambulance to the Crawford County Hospital.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — D.J. Wilkins had 19 points to lead five Drake players in double figures as the Bulldogs routed Kennesaw State 86-55. Jonah Jackson added 15 points for the Bulldogs.
BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — Douglas Wilson registered 13 points and eight rebounds as South Dakota State easily defeated Peru State 86-58 on Thursday night. David Wingett and Matt Dentlinger had 12 points apiece for South Dakota State (2-0).

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — No. 18 Iowa is set to face No. 16 Wisconsin, which has won six seven meetings against the Hawkeyes since 2010. The Badgers have outscored Iowa by a combined margin of 83-40 during their current three-game winning streak in the series, but they’re reeling right now after back-to-back road losses at Illinois and Ohio State. Iowa, which is seeking its first win this season against a ranked opponent, has four shutouts in its last 11 Big Ten games.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — For Kansas City coach Andy Reid, when Patrick Mahomes plays again is easy. It’s when the reigning NFL MVP is physically ready. Mahomes wanted back on the field for the Chiefs soon after dislocating his right kneecap. But the Chiefs have gone 2-1 with Matt Moore. With sights set on a fourth straight AFC West title, that makes it easier for the Chiefs to think longer term than the next kickoff. The Titans desperately need a win before their bye.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Blues winger Alex Steen will miss at least four weeks because of a high ankle sprain. Steen injured his left ankle in a collision with Edmonton’s Alex Chaisson late in the second period of the defending Stanley Cup champions’ 5-2 win over the Oilers. The Blues are already without top-line winger Vladimir Tarasenko for the rest of the regular season following right shoulder surgery.

UNDATED (AP) — Minnesota was supposed to be an afterthought in the Big Ten West race. But the surging Gophers might all but wrap up the division soon. No. 13 Minnesota hosts No. 5 Penn State with a chance to take a two-game lead in the West with three to play. Meanwhile, No. 18 Iowa travels to No. 16 Wisconsin in a battle of two preseason West favorites that are instead tied for second behind the Gophers.

UNDATED (AP) — In a conference best known for producing Heisman-winning quarterbacks and Biletnikoff Award-winning receivers, Big 12 freshmen are making their names running with the football. Four of the nation’s top nine freshman rushers from Power Five schools play in the Big 12: Iowa State’s Breece Hall, Texas Tech’s SaRodorick Thompson, Oklahoma State’s Spencer Sanders and Roschon Johnson of Texas.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Matt Pile had a career-high 22 points as Nebraska Omaha defeated NAIA member Midland Lutheran 72-53. Pile shot 10 for 13 from the floor.
