Thunderstorms with Heavy Rain and Small Hail over western Iowa Early this Morning.

A band of showers and thunderstorms extended from Denison through Atlantic to near Corning early this morning and were moving only slowly eastward. Some of these storms were producing up to dime sized hail and locally heavy rains, up to an inch in one hour. These storms may produce low visibilities and ponding water on
roads as they drift toward Carroll and Audubon through 400 am. Motorists are urged to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions in rain over short distances.

At 242am…KJAN Radio reported peak to half inch hail covering the ground in Atlantic.

Heavy rain and pea-to-nickel size hail was observed in Atlantic this morning. The heaviest activity fell between 2:30 and 2:45-a.m., and covered the concrete for a time before melting. We’ll have a rainfall report for you later this morning (By around 5-a.m.)

April 2017 Weather stats for Atlantic

The month of April was warmer and wetter than average, for Atlantic. Here at the KJAN Studios (The official National Weather Service site for Atlantic), the Average High for the month was 63, which was .8 of a degree warmer than normal. The Average Low was 40.2, which was 11.7 degrees warmer than normal. Rainfall for the month amounted to 4.41 inches, which was nearly .9″ (.89″) greater than normal.

Looking ahead to May, the Average High is 73.1, and the Average Low 49.1. Rainfall for the month typically amounts to 4.32 inches.
