Cheers of fans watching TV at home will be heard during Cyclone football game

Sports

September 12th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – When Cyclone football players make big plays during today’s (Saturday’s) season opener, they’ll hear fans cheering, even though Jack Trice Stadium will be nearly empty because of the pandemic. A web-based platform is being used that will allow the voices of fans at home to be heard through the stadium’s P-A system. Nathan Terry, associate marketing director at Iowa State University, says it’s an incredibly simple, clever app.

The application will also work from a laptop or tablet, as long as there’s a microphone attached. The venue normally seats more than 61-thousand people, so he hopes thousands of loyal Cyclones will log in and use the free app to fill the stadium with their cheers.

Imagine making a touchdown on your home field and not hearing any reaction from the empty stands. It would be a bit disheartening for the players, so Terry says this app will serve a dual purpose.

The Canadian company behind “Hear Me Cheer” is able to use algorithms so no single fan’s cheers — or comments — will be heard. The speakers at the stadium will broadcast only the combined shouts, gasps and even boos of everyone using the app. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 AM as Iowa State meets the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, carried live on ESPN.

Sports

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans made some big 2nd half plays and came away with a 31-18 victory over Greene County to start 2A District 9 play on Friday night in Jefferson. It was a very tight game for much of the night but the Trojans outscored the Rams 15-0 in the 4th quarter to grab the win.

It was a 12-10 Greene County lead at halftime, and the Rams were up 18-16 heading into the fourth quarter. Atlantic scored on a 2-yard run by Bodie Johnson and the 2-point conversion was executed successfully on a pass to Garrett Reynolds to put Atlantic up 24-18 with 7:23 left in the game. Greene County would then turn the ball over on downs their next possession, but did then force a Trojan punt to get the ball back with 3:26 left in the game. Bodie Johnson then came up with a game-clinching 22-yard interception return for a touchdown to seal the Trojan win. Grant Sturm would grab an interception on the final Greene County possession to put the game on ice.

Bodie Johnson finished with three touchdowns on the night to lead the Trojans to the win. Atlantic improves to 2-1 on the season and are now 1-0 in District play. The Trojans are scheduled to host Clarinda next week. The location for that game is up in the air due to continued construction at the Trojan Bowl. We’ll plan to have coverage on KJAN.

Greene County was led by Jackson Morton’s 2 rushing touchdowns on the night. The Rams fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the District.

St. Albert edges out win over Riverside in hard fought game

Sports

September 12th, 2020 by admin

The St. Albert Falcons hit a big play and got a fortunate bounce in the second half to edge out the Riverside Bulldogs 21-14 on Friday night in Oakland. Defense controlled the game most of the night but Cy Patterson broke a 7-7 tie with an 82-yard touchdown run with 3:48 left to go in the third quarter. The Falcons then got the ball right back on a fortunate bounce on the next kickoff. The Falcons were trying to squib the kickoff down the middle of the field on a low driver from Sam Wilber. His kick hit one of the Riverside return players in the back as they turned around to set up the return. The ball bounced hard off the Bulldog player right back to St. Albert. The Falcons took back over at their own 49-yard line. 7 plays later they punched in another score on a 1-yard plunge from quarterback Brendan Monahan to make it 21-7.

The Bulldogs did get back within a score on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Austin Kremkoski to Ethan Reicks with 11:07 left in the game. Riverside was then able to force the Falcons to punt the ball back to them with 7:23 left. The Bulldogs could only manage to drive the ball to as far as their own 40 before turning it over on downs with 3:19 left. St. Albert elected to try a 40-yard field with 2:20 left to try to seal the victory, but Sam Wilber’s kick was a bit short and wide right. Riverside had once last chance, but ended up throwing an interception on 4th down to let the Falcons secure the win.

The first half scoring came on 1-yard touchdown runs from Patterson and Kremkoski.  St. Albert picked up their first win of the season, an important one at the start of Class A District 9 play. The Falcons are now 1-2 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in the District. St. Albert will host Southwest Valley next week, while Riverside will travel to Tri-Center.

Iowa Supreme Court suspends law license of former prosecutor

News

September 11th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

WAVERLY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Supreme Court has disciplined again a former Iowa prosecutor for professional conduct violations. The state’s highest court suspended on Friday Jesse Marten’s law license for 30 days. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports Marten was the top prosecutor for Floyd County before his removal in 2010 for violating ethics rules.

The latest ruling is the second disciplinary matter against him. The Iowa Supreme Court said it was most troubled by his willingness to provide knowingly inaccurate tax returns for his clients to give their bank in support of loan applications.

Iowa says unknown substance released into Mosquito Creek

News

September 11th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — MidAmerica Energy has contacted Iowa environmental regulators to alert them of a sheen noticed on Mosquito Creek that appeared to be coming from a storm water drain at the Walter Scott Plant. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said in a news release Friday that booms and absorbent material were immediately deployed.

An unknown amount of the unidentified substance entered Mosquito Creek. The company has a contractor at the site cleaning out the storm drain and stopping any further release. No impact was observed on the Missouri River and no dead fish were observed in Mosquito Creek.
