The Harlan girls basketball team opened up the game with an 11-0 run and held Atlantic at bay the rest of the game on their way to a 73-60 win Thursday night. The Cyclones led 22-10 at the end of the first, 38-25 at half, and 53-41 at the end of the third. Everytime the Trojans would close the gap to 12 or 10, the Cyclones responded with a big shot. Brecken Van Baale had a number of timely threes to turn momentum back to the Cyclones.

Van Baale finished with a game high 18 points. The Cyclones had three other players in double figures with 17 from Claire Schmitz, 15 for Jocelyn Cheek, and 13 from Ashley Hall. The Class 4A 11th ranked Cyclones improved to 10-3 with the win. The Cyclones will next play Saturday in Omaha at Sokol Arena against Bishop Neumann, NE at 9:30 a.m.

Atlantic was led by 15 points from Jada Jensen and 13 from Haley Rasmussen in the loss. The Trojans fall to 6-8 on the year and will now prep for a Saturday home game against Urbandale that was added to the schedule Thursday. That varsity game will tip at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Iowa high school football will have another class starting with 2021 season

Sports

January 21st, 2021 by admin

(IHSAA) The IHSAA Board of Control approved and accepted the lone recommendation out of recent meetings of the joint IHSAA and IGHSAU classification committee, adding one classification of football ahead of the 2021 season.

The new classification will be Class 5A, adding an 11-player group to reduce the disparity in enrollment in the IHSAA’s largest class of football, and to increase the number of participating teams and student-athletes in the postseason.

The board approved separate scheduling and playoff plans across the seven football classifications:

Class 5A, Class 4A, Class 3A: 36 teams, 9 regular season games, 16 playoff qualifiers.

Class 2A, Class 1A: 48 teams, 8 regular season games, 32 playoff qualifiers.

Class A: Remainder of 11-player teams, 8 regular season games, 32 playoff qualifiers.

Eight-Player: All 8-player teams, 8 regular season games, 32 playoff qualifiers.

Teams in 2A, 1A, A, and 8P will be permitted to play a ninth regular season contest should they not qualify for the postseason.

Additional information regarding playoff qualification and district assignments will be released at a later date.

2021 Iowa State Wrestling Tournament keeps original schedule

Sports

(IHSAA) BOONE, Iowa – With COVID-19 precautions and attendance restrictions in place, the IHSAA Board of Control determined Thursday to conduct the 2021 IHSAA State Wrestling Championships as currently scheduled at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The state dual team tournament (Wednesday) and state traditional tournament (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) remain planned to run in their usual sessions and formats from February 17-20. Competition and spectator guidelines for these IHSAA events will continue to follow the most updated proclamations and guidance with state and local government officials, and Iowa Events Center.

“The IHSAA is grateful to all those who have worked to make this wrestling season possible,” IHSAA executive director Tom Keating said. “The board feels strongly that the traditional schedule can be safely completed for the largest possible competition and audience at each day of the 2021 IHSAA State Wrestling Championships.”

Social distancing requirements and COVID-19 related safety precautions will limit spectator capacity, create reserved seating blocks, and change participant procedures at Wells Fargo Arena. The IHSAA State Wrestling Championships average more than 75,000 attendees across all sessions annually, but capacity will currently allow for less than 4,000 tickets per session this year.

The traditional tournament features 672 individual qualifiers from more than 200 member school wrestling programs. The dual team tournament qualifies eight teams per classification and has been contested on the day before the traditional tournament since moving to Wells Fargo Arena in 2012.

Ticketing information for each date will be announced by the IHSAA and Iowa Events Center as it becomes available. Participating member schools will be contacted first for purchasing options.

Due to restricted capacity and to offer participating wrestlers an opportunity to remain at the event, ticket prices have been increased to $15 per session (dual team tournament, traditional tournament sessions 1-7) and $20 for the traditional tournament finals (session 8).

Cheerleaders will be unable to attend the state traditional tournament as event performers due to space limitations.

Further details on attendance and entry for member schools, credentialed media, and event personnel will be announced as they become available.

Gov. Reynolds announces additional assistance through Iowa COVID-19 Local Government Relief Fund

News

January 21st, 2021 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds has announced the reallocation of $17 million in relief money made available to local governments for direct expenses incurred in response to the COVID-19 emergency. Of the $17 million remaining from the Local Government Relief Fund, roughly $4.7 million was previously allocated to smaller cities and. to simplify the administration of distribution, is being reallocated to the County the City resides in. These smaller cities rely on services provided by the Counties, such as public health and public safety.  Counties will not have to reapply for the additional funds and the State will use the latest application from the Local Government Relief Fund to finalize the award.

Reynolds said “In so many ways COVID-19 has changed the way government serves its citizens, and perhaps the greatest impact has been at the local level. These resources will provide County and City governments with additional assistance to provide essential services to Iowans as they continue to combat the pandemic.” She added “I appreciate the unprecedented collaboration we have seen at the state, county, and city level which includes the incredible teams at Iowa State Association of Counties and the Iowa League of Cities.”

A breakdown of funds can be found here.

Governor Reynolds: Vaccine demand will far exceed supply for some time

News

January 21st, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Governor Kim Reynolds says Iowa has gotten 160-thousand first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine so far, and about 106-thousand of them have already been administered, mostly to front-line health care workers. Reynolds says demand will continue to “vastly exceed supply” in Iowa for quite a while.

The plan calls for adding more essential workers to the vaccine mix starting early next month and the governor says it’s possible the state will be sent more doses of the vaccine, but there’s uncertainty with the change in administrations.

The next phase of recipients being added to the list next month will include people like teachers, grocery store employees, child care workers, workers in meat production facilities and more first responders and law enforcement.
