Clarinda woman injured in single-vehicle accident

News

February 25th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

The Page County Sheriff’s Office, Thursday (Today), reported on a single-vehicle, personal injury accident that took place at around 12:34-p.m., Monday. Authorities say the accident happened in the 3200 block of 305th Street, or about 3.5 miles east of Braddyville. An investigation determined 36-year old Emily Christine Garcia, of Clarinda, was driving a 2001 Nissan XTR eastbound, when the vehicle went out of control on the soft gravel road. When Garcia tried to regain control of the SUV, the vehicle swerved and entered the north ditch, where it struck the bank and became stuck. Garcia – who was the only occupant of the vehicle- suffered possible/undisclosed injuries, and was transported to the Clarinda Regional Hospital by Clarinda Ambulance service.

Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $500. No citations were issued. The Page County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Clarinda Ambulance service, Braddyville Fire & Rescue, and the Clarinda Fire Department. Page County EMA also assisted at the scene.

Iowa delegation requests assistance for custom cattle feeders

Ag/Outdoor

February 25th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

Anna Hastert, Director of Communications for the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA), says the ICA extends its thanks to Iowa’s congressional delegation for its swift action in supporting custom cattle feeders. We greatly appreciate the delegation for working in a bipartisan fashion to advance the priorities of Iowa’s beef business. Earlier this year, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association emphasized the need for additional coronavirus assistance after speaking with producer members and state Farm Service Agency officials. Hastert says “While we recognize the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s commitment to the cattle industry, more help is needed.”

As a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic, Iowa custom cattle feeders suffered economic hardships. Their experiences over the past year are similar to challenges faced by swine and poultry contract growers, who are eligible to receive assistance through existing programming.

Senators Grassley and Ernst, Representatives Axne, Feenstra, Hinson, and Miller-Meeks on Wednesday sent a joint letter to Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack. The letter requests that USDA include custom cattle feeders in existing or forthcoming aid programs. Iowa Cattlemen’s Association CEO Matt Deppe says, “One of our top priorities over the past year has been working to ensure cattle producers receive adequate assistance to recover from COVID-19 losses. The united show of support from Iowa’s congressional delegation on this important issue is exactly what our producer members need.”

Mass COVID vaccination event in Sioux City draws 1,500 people

News

February 25th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic was held at the Tyson Events Center in downtown Sioux City on Wednesday. Officials say around 15-hundred people received their first dose of the vaccine. Siouxland District Health Department spokesman Tyler Brock says vaccine demand is still high and a mass clinic can help meet that demand — a little. “We know it’s not enough,” Brock says. “We know there’s more people out there still that want vaccine and haven’t been able to get it, but we also are starting to see more and more people actually cancel their appointments because they’re getting vaccine somewhere else.”

The clinic was only for people in Woodbury County who are 65 and older, teachers and others who are eligible. Sixty-five-year-old Gloria Anderson got her vaccine and says she’s a little uneasy about possible side effects from it. “But I think that getting it is better than the risk of not getting it,” Anderson says.

When the event was announced last week, the phone bank got seven-thousand calls from people trying to make appointments for 15-hundred slots. This was the fourth mass clinic at the Tyson in Sioux City. The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics has also been holding large-scale vaccination events in Iowa City.

Turkey Sausage Scrambles (2-25-2021)

Mom's Tips

February 25th, 2021 by Jim Field

  • 1 1/2 cups pre-cooked potatoes (has browns or diced potatoes)
  • 1 1/2 cups pre-cooked turkey sausage, crumbled
  • 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped veggies, such as onions, mushrooms or chopped bell peppers (optional)
  • 12 eggs (2 eggs per serving)

In the order listed, layer 1/4 cup of each ingredient (except for the eggs) into six pint-sized glass mason jars (or microwave-safe dishes).  Seal and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.  When ready to cook, lightly whisk two eggs and pour into the jar.  Microwave, uncovered, for one minute and give the eggs a quick stir.  Microwave an additional one to two minutes until the eggs are thoroughly cooked.  Let sit for one minute before removing from the microwave.  Caution:  jar and eggs will be hot!

Serving suggestion:  top with chopped tomatoes, scallions, cilantro or salsa.
