IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa men’s basketball team will open Big Ten play at home against Purdue on Dec. 28. The Big Ten released its full schedule Wednesday, which includes Nebraska for the first time. The Hawkeyes will host the Boilermakers, Ohio State and Michigan in their first three league home games. The Huskers make their first trip to Carver-Hawkeye Arena as a Big Ten rival on Jan. 26. Iowa opens the season on Nov. 11 against Chicago State.

     AMES, Iowa (AP) – The series between Iowa and Iowa State, once put on ice for more than 40 years because of bad blood, appears to be stronger than ever.  Saturday’s matchup in Ames is sold out, something Cyclones officials can rarely count on for any other opponent. Iowa recently worked with the Big Ten to ensure the series continues when the league goes to a nine-game schedule in 2017.  The passion both fan bases have for this matchup was also evident in the recent furor over the new Cy-Hawk rivalry trophy, which is being redesigned.  Iowa (1-0) has won three straight over Iowa State (1-0), which rallied to beat Northern Iowa 20-19 in its opener.

     COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) – The Associated Press has obtained an email indicating that it was Baylor that raised the specter of legal action to stop Texas A&M from leaving the Big 12.  The email was sent late Tuesday by Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe to Mike Slive, his counterpart at the SEC.  It says the Southeastern Conference will need to ask each Big 12 school to waive their legal rights to clear the way for Texas A&M to join the SEC. Beebe says: “I recognize that this issue has been raised due to Baylor University’s indication that its governing board has not waived the university’s rights” to take legal action.  Beebe had sent a letter to Slive on Sept. 2 saying that the Big 
12 “and its members” would not go to court to sue the SEC or its 12 member schools over Texas A&M as long as the deal was secured by Thursday afternoon.  Beebe then sent Tuesday night’s email around the time that SEC presidents and chancellors were voting on an application from Texas A&M to join by next summer. Beebe told Slive, “I regret any confusion on this issue.”  Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin told the AP in an interview that Tuesday’s email was “really a violation of trust” on the part of Beebe. The Big 12 did not immediately return a message left seeking comment Wednesday afternoon.

Coach Jahnke Says:
After starting the match off well we lost the momentum and were not able to gain it back. Our serve receive game was not where it needed to be tonight and as a result our offense was never able to get going.   I thought we played very tentative and tight as we faced our first home crowd of the season. I think it also showed that Clarinda has 7 matches under their belt to our 1 match. Clarinda is a good team who used the very tactics against us that we attempt to deploy on our opponents. The positives are that we learned where our weak points are. We will learn and grow from this.

     KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel is banged up. Tight end Tony Moeaki is done for the year, and nobody knows when wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin will be back from a thumb injury.  Yet Kansas City somehow believes its offense is even better than last year, when it featured the most potent rushing attack in the NFL. Even with an offensive line that might be considered at turns either old, inexperienced and lacking in depth.  The Chiefs only managed four touchdowns all of preseason, but
running back Thomas Jones says that shouldn’t matter. He believes that scoring punch will return when the Chiefs hit the field for real on Sunday in their season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

     IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa’s coaching staff spent eight months wondering what the rebuilt Hawkeyes would look like.  Last week’s 34-7 win over Tennessee Tech didn’t shed a ton of light on Iowa’s prospects for 2011, thanks to terrible conditions and an overmatched opponent.  That should change this weekend, when the Hawkeyes play at rival Iowa State. Iowa (1-0) has won three straight over the Cyclones (1-0), but coach Kirk Ferentz is still just 6-6 against Iowa State in his 12 years in Iowa City.  Iowa State opened the year with a 20-19 win over Northern Iowa.

ST. LOUIS, Mo., Sept, 6, 2011 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that infielder Nick Punto has been activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing 36 games due to a strained left oblique.  Punto was placed on the disabled list July 29.

Punto, 33, has batted .271 with 13 RBI in 44 games for the Cardinals this season, making 21 starts at second base, three at third base and three at shortstop.

The switch-hitting Punto batted .200 (3-for-15) in a five-game injury rehabilitation assignment with Memphis (AAA).   His 2011 season was interrupted by sports hernia and right forearm injuries earlier in the year.
