A survey released last week showing Iowa’s pheasant population is at an all-time low is not only bad news for hunters, it’s a big blow for the Iowa economy. Kevin Baskins, spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says hunters spend a lot of money on hotels, food and equipment – but they’re not spending as much when their chances for a successful hunt are affected.

“A lot of that spending occurs in Iowa’s most rural areas, where there’s more amble hunting opportunities,” Baskins said. “So, certainly this can have a big impact on main streets across the state because if we don’t have the pheasants, we’re not going to have the hunters coming into those smaller communities and spending money during that time frame.”

Iowa’s 2011 pheasant hunting season runs from October 29 through January 10, 2012. The D-N-R’s roadside survey, conducted in August, found an average of 7 birds counted for each 30 miles of route driven. That compares to 11 birds per route last year. Baskins says the situation may not be as bad as it seems.

“A lot of our biologists and people who were involved in with that roadside count have noted that since the official count was over, they have been seeing more birds,” Baskins said. “We would guess at this point, if we are off in terms of our estimations, we’re probably off on the low side. There may be more birds out there than what we’re projecting at this point.”

The dwindling pheasant population is blamed primarily on five consecutive winters of above average snowfall, in addition to a series of cold and wet springs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Ryan Fitzpatrick threw four touchdown passes, two of them to journeyman tight end Scott Chandler, and the Buffalo Bills romped to a season-opening 41-7 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Fitzpatrick finished with 208 yards passing for the Bills, who who hadn’t score 40 points in an opener since a 40-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 6, 1992. Fred Jackson added 112 yards rushing for Buffalo. Matt Cassel threw for 119 yards with a touchdown and interception for Kansas City. It was the most lopsided season-opening loss in franchise history, and the worst home loss by the Chiefs since a 45-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers 35 years ago.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Yadier Molina had three hits, including a three-run double, and the St. Louis Cardinals moved back into the playoff picture by completing a three-game  sweep of the slumping Atlanta Braves with a 6-3 win Sunday. The Cardinals pulled within 4 1/2 games of NL wild card-leading Atlanta. They have 16 games left and open a three-game set in Pittsburgh on Monday. The Braves start a three-game series with the Marlins on Monday and have 15 games remaining. Atlanta has dropped seven straight games at Busch Stadium and hasn’t won in St. Louis since Sept. 13, 2009. Jake Westbrook (12-8) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings for the Cardinals. Jason Motte pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save in eight chances.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) – Former Iowa football star Brett Greenwood is in an Iowa hospital after collapsing during a workout. A spokeswoman for Trinity Medical Center in Bettendorf says Greenwood was taken there in critical condition Friday. He’s since been transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. That hospital said it could not provide any information.  Greenwood collapsed while working out at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf. Athletic director Randy Teymer told the newspaper that school medical personnel administered to him before he was taken by ambulance to Trinity Medical Center. The 23-year-old Greenwood was a four-year starter at Iowa. He signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was released in the final round of NFL cuts last weekend.
