IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Aaron White and Josh Oglesby each scored 13 points and Iowa rallied from a 23-point deficit to clip Gardner-Webb 65-56 on Saturday night. The Hawkeyes trailed by as much as 38-15 late in the first half at home before a 15-0 run cut Gardner-Webb’s lead to eight. Iowa took its first lead, 47-46, with 8:22 left, and Devyn Marble’s 3 with 2:17 to go put Iowa ahead 60-52.

Adam Woodbury had 12 points for the Hawkeyes (4-0), who outscored the Runnin’ Bulldogs 47-18 in the second half and survived a major scare. Onzie Branch had 13 to lead Gardner-Webb, which shot 19 percent in the second half.

Iowa State blasts Kansas 51-23

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Sam Richardson, who had not even attempted a pass all year, threw for 250 yards and four touchdowns Saturday night, sparking Iowa State past Kansas 51-23 and handing the Jayhawks their 20th consecutive Big 12 loss. Richardson led the Cyclones (6-5 overall, 3-5 Big 12) to touchdowns on four straight possessions in the second quarter while taking a 38-17 lead in Lawrence, Kansas. The redshirt freshman, virtually overlooked all year in the Cyclones’ jumbled quarterback picture, had previously seen only mop-up duty in one game.

While going 23 for 27, Richardson spread his completions around to 12 different receivers. Six different Cyclones scored touchdowns. For Kansas (1-10, 0-8), the final home game of the year sent a bedraggled class of seniors out on the same sort of sour note which has characterized their entire collegiate careers.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – Jake Koch had 16 points and eight rebounds as Northern Iowa defeated North Dakota 72-47 Saturday.  Koch was 10 for 10 from the free-throw line and also had four assists for the Panthers (3-0). Chip Rank added 13 points and Matt Bohannon had 11. Aaron Anderson led North Dakota (1-2) with 12 points.

Northern Iowa never trailed, jumping out to 36-19 lead with 3:22 left in the first half. The Fighting Sioux answered with six straight points before the break and opened the second half on a 7-2 run to pull within 38-32. That was as close as North Dakota got as the Panthers scored the next eight points and eventually built a 25-point lead.   Northern Iowa hit its first 16 free throws and finished 17 for 20 at the line.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Devin Gardner accounted for six touchdowns to help No. 23 Michigan rout Iowa 42-17 Saturday. The Wolverines (8-3, 6-1 Big Ten) weren’t stopped on offense by the hapless Hawkeyes (4-7, 2-5) until Gardner threw an interception early in the fourth quarter. Gardner threw three touchdowns and ran for three scores. He became the first Michigan quarterback to account for six TDs since 1983 when Steve Smith had as many passing and rushing scores in a game at Minnesota.

Denard Robinson played after missing two-plus games with nerve damage in his right elbow. Robinson started at running back and took some snaps at QB, but didn’t throw a pass. Michigan running back Fitzgerald Toussaint appeared to break his left leg on his team’s first drive.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Paul Brown ran for one touchdown and passed for another and Spirit Lake survived five turnovers to beat Mediapolis 17-15 on Friday and win the Class 2A state championship. Brown’s 3-yard TD run gave the Indians (13-1) a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter and they held on against a Mediapolis team playing without star quarterback Jesse Ertz, a Kansas State recruit who was sidelined by a knee injury. Trailing 17-13, Mediapolis (13-1) got the ball on Blake Beckman’s fumble recovery at the Spirit Lake 36 with 2:14 remaining. But Drew Foster, who filled in for Ertz, was intercepted by Tyler Peterson on the next play and Spirit Lake ran out the clock, taking a safety as time expired in Cedar Falls.

Cardinals Unveil New Uniforms for the 2013 Season

Sports

November 16th, 2012 by Jim Field

St. Louis Cardinals New Uniforms

The St. Louis Cardinals today unveiled new uniforms for the 2013 season, the first update to the teams’ wardrobe in more than a decade. For the first time in more than 80 years, the team will wear an alternate uniform on Saturdays that will feature “St. Louis” in place of “Cardinals” on the jersey.

“We are excited about the new uniforms,” said Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III, who led the design efforts. “We think the design improvements will be popular with both players and fans — particularly the addition of the alternate jersey on home Saturdays.”

The Cardinals will be the 27th team in MLB to add an alternate jersey to their lineup and the fourth to use off-white. The home alternate jersey will be worn on home Saturdays and will feature “St. Louis” in place of “Cardinals” under the iconic birds on the bat. The jersey and matching pants feature an off-white color, red piping, and the player number on the front.  All the team’s jerseys (home, road, home alternate) will feature more detail in the embroidery, consistent with the graphical logo used by the club since 1998. The richer detail is made possible by advances in the manufacturing process. In addition to being one of the most
recognized logos in baseball, the iconic Cardinals Birds on Bat logo is one of the highest quality logos in MLB. It is produced using chenille stitching directly embroidered onto the jersey, a more painstaking method than the traditional twill patch application used by other teams.  It takes over an hour to stitch each individual jersey, with nearly 40,000 stitches required for the home and road jerseys. Majestic uses the latest embroidery technology and most talented sewing staff at their Pennsylvania facility to produce the uniforms.

With the 2013 jerseys, fans will notice much more detail in the birds. Additional changes include a slight modification to the size of the numbers on the front of the jersey (dropping from 4 inches to 3 ½”). All jerseys are available in both the traditional double knit and the Cool Base, a lightweight moisture wicking performance fabric that is popular with players. In addition to the jersey changes, the team will wear red caps with their road uniforms, while the blue cap will remain a road alternate. The team will also wear a new batting practice cap this season.  Fans may purchase the 2013 authentic jerseys at the Cardinals Official Team Store at Busch Stadium exclusively through Thanksgiving and at other local outlets thereafter. While supplies last, the Cardinals Official Team Store at Busch Stadium is offering a free set of pint glasses featuring the new St. Louis logo with the purchase of the 2013 home alternate jersey. The store is also offering, for a fee, on-site jersey customization to accommodate holiday shoppers looking for a unique personalized gift. The team store is open 10 AM – 6 PM seven days a week, except holidays. The store will have extended hours on Black Friday (8AM – 6PM) and will have a number of Black Friday Specials.
