ISU QB Barnett to transfer

Sports

January 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State quarterback Jared Barnett, who went from the starter to a third stringer in just over two months, has decided to transfer after two seasons.  Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads announced Friday that Barnett and linebacker C.J. Morgan will be transferring out of the program.

Barnett led the Cyclones to the biggest win in school history in 2011, throwing for 376 yards in a win over then-No. 2 Oklahoma State. But Barnett lost his starting job to senior Steele Jantz twice in 2012, while freshman Sam Richardson took over as the starter for the final two games of the season.  Barnett threw for 1,825 yards and 12 TDs at Iowa State.

Rhoads says Morgan has some health issues with his family and is looking to play closer to home.

Iowa Women Pull-off 1st Big Win on the Road over Wisconsin

Sports

January 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

MADISON, Wis. — Fueled by a 16-3 run midway through the second half, the University of Iowa women’s basketball team dumped Wisconsin 65-56 on Thursday at the Kohl Center.

The Hawkeyes (13-4 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) received double-doubles from senior center Morgan Johnson  (23 points, 11 rebounds) and sophomore guard Samantha Logic (12 points, 10 rebounds). Once again Logic flirted with a triple double: she handed out nine assists.

Iowa has won eight of its last nine games, but last Sunday the Hawkeyes were knocked off at home by Michigan, 68-64. The Hawkeyes lead the Big Ten with 17.2 assists per game; Iowa had 17 more against Wisconsin, with a bulk coming from Logic.

The Hawkeyes have seven days before playing at Michigan State on Jan. 17.

No. 22 Michigan State holds off Iowa 62-59

Sports

January 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Branden Dawson scored a career-high 17 points, including a late steal and tiebreaking dunk that helped No. 22 Michigan State hold off Iowa 62-59 on Thursday night. Gary Harris had 14 points for the Spartans (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten), who hung on late for their eighth win in nine games. Dawson ripped the ball away from Iowa freshman Mike Gesell and gave Michigan State a 58-56 lead with 49 seconds left.

Anthony Clemmons missed a free throw that would have tied it with 12 seconds to go and airballed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as Iowa (11-5, 0-3) lost its third straight. The Hawkeyes played without leading scorer Devyn Marble, who sprained his ankle in practice this week. Zach McCabe led Iowa with 15 points and fellow reserve Melsahn Basabe added 14.

Record-setting Taylor breaks wrist, out for season

Sports

January 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

GRINNELL, Iowa (AP) — Jack Taylor, who set the NCAA scoring record with 138 points in a game in November, is out for the season after breaking his wrist. Grinnell College spokesman Ted Schultz says Taylor fractured the radius on his shooting arm during a 119-117 win over rival Cornell (Iowa) on Wednesday. Taylor will likely have surgery within a week and be out 2-3 months, costing the sensational sophomore the rest of the season.

Taylor captured the attention of the basketball world when he dropped 138 points against Faith Baptist Bible College on November 12th, shattering the previous mark by 25 points. Taylor finishes his season averaging 36.3 points per game in leading the Pioneers to a 9-3 record.
