AMES, Iowa (AP) — Elijah Johnson scored a career-high 39 points — 12 in overtime — and No. 6 Kansas rallied to beat Iowa State 108-96 on Monday night for coach Bill Self’s 500th career win. Travis Releford added 19 points for the Jayhawks (24-4, 12-3 Big 12), who snapped Iowa State’s 22-game home winning streak and kept pace with No. 13 Kansas State atop the Big 12.

Johnson made two free throws with 4.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 90-all. He and Releford buried 3s to put Kansas ahead 100-92 with 2:03 left, and Johnson drilled a 30-footer with 54 seconds left. Korie Lucious scored 23 points and Tyrus McGee had 22 for the Cyclones (19-9, 9-6), who dropped their third overtime game in Big 12 play — and their second straight at the hands of the Jayhawks.

After the game a handful of those in the student section hurled small plastic megaphones at the Jayhawks as they ran back to their locker room.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Matt Holliday and Allen Craig each hit their first homers of spring training, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 10-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Monday. Craig was starting as the designated hitter because he has had a sore shoulder the past few days and has yet to play in the field. He reached base in all three at-bats, adding a walk and an RBI single in the fourth. Adam Wainwright, the Cardinals’ likely opening-day starter, allowed four hits while striking out three in 2 2-3 scoreless innings.

Phil Humber needed only eight pitches to retire the Cardinals in the first inninng, but he struggled with his control in the second. Humber walked the first two batters then allowed a RBI hit to David Freese.

February 25th, 2013 by Jim Field

Newell-Fonda began the first five-class state tournament with an impressive victory.

Five players scored at least eight points in an efficient, balanced effort as the second-ranked Mustangs rolled past Villisca 75-28 in Class 1-A play.

Renee Maneman, a slick 5-foot-5 junior, led the way with 15 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals. Andrea Christensen, the only senior who starts, added 14 points and freshman Jordan Wilken scored 11.

Newell-Fonda also got nine points from Brianna Wells and eight points, seven assists and six rebounds from Claudia Larsen. The Mustangs, in the state tournament for the third time in the last four years, move on to Wednesday night’s semifinal round with a 23-2 record.

Unranked Villisca had visions of an upset early, taking leads of 8-5 and 10-9. Newell-Fonda’s full-court press then began taking a toll and the Mustangs closed out the first half on a 31-4 run to open a 40-14 lead.

They started the third quarter with a 16-2 burst, setting the continuous clock into play. Newell-Fonda shot 53 percent in the second half and finished with 15 steals.

Villisca made it to state for the first time since 1968 and finished 21-5, tying the school record for victories. Jill Vanderhoof led the Bluejays with 11 points and nine rebounds.

It was the final girls basketball game for Villisca, which will join with Corning next fall to become Southwest Valley.
